Night's truth
I sigh, I probably need to leave before they get suspicious. I flip my hood up and go back to the main room, my question still unanswered. Meanwhile, since it was dinnertime, the Avenger's had ordered Chinese (I know it's cliche but I love sesame chicken so hush)
I put rice and sesame chicken on my plate. I had taken my veil off so I could eat, but I left my hood on. Can't have them seeing my identity. Call me crazy, but the chicken, although already delicious, is extra good with ketchup. Bruce makes a nice tea too, although I added a LOT of sugar to mine.
All in all dinner was nice, until the food fight. First Clint was annoying Pietro, who then tossed rice at Clint, but missed and hit Nat. Clearly, that started a food fight. I was smart, and teamed with Nat, Clint, Tony, Peter, Wanda, and Loki. Vision, Dr. Strange and Bruce decided to stay out of this whole thing, so they just went into the other room. Pietro was teamed with Cap, Bucky, Sam, Thor and Scott. It went on for a while, but then everyone got tired so they just cleaned up and started to either watch a movie or do their own thing in their rooms.
Tony insisted I stay here, just for the night and I agreed.
The room he led me to was blue, with blue covers and a redwood dresser and nightstand. One of the walls was entirely windows, which I was happy to see opened. He said it would be my room for the night, and to ask FRIDAY if I needed anything. He left and closed the door.
When he left I flipped my hood off. "Hey, FRIDAY? Can you keep a secret or two? I don't want anyone looking through your files and seeing my face."
"Yes, is that all?"
I thought for a moment and saw the connected bathroom, "Would Tony mind if I take a shower?"
"No, he would not."
"Thank you."
"Any time."
I got out of my robes, happy to see spare towels, and got in the shower. The moment the hot water hit my back I practically melted. It felt so good. The closest I've gotten to an actual shower recently was a rainstorm last week and when I would often jump in the ocean. The hot water felt nice. I gently washed my ears, hair, body, and tail, before carefully washing my wings. It was nice to be able to do this, and Tony said I could stay here whenever, that it could be a second home if I wanted. Well, including the church it would actually be a third home, but I will take him up on that.
I dried off and put on my robes again. It was actually comforting to wear them. To have something to hide my face from prying eyes and something to wear and be silent instead of all the questions pounding in my head.
I open the window and fly to the roof. It's almost the full moon and when that happens I will be at my most powerful. Well, aside from the blood-moons anyways.
I retrieve some string I made and the styled wooden body of a lute from my robes. The body was black and blue, with shining crimson trim and details. I attach the strings and tune the lute.
Perfect.
I begin strumming to a calm yet wild tune, so much like nature and night itself. Something about music, especially songs like this, just pull me to them. I don't even hear the heartbeat until they put a hand on my shoulder.
Startled, I growl and flip around, nails becoming claws.
"Whoa! It's me!"
It was just Peter.
I settle back down and change my voice to match when we were at the zoo.
"What are you doing up so late?" I ask
"I could ask you the same thing!" He exclaims
"I prefer the dark beauty of the night compared to the blinding brightness of the day."
"Okaaay, that doesn't sound ominous or vampire-like at all."
I laugh. Oh, if only he knew...
"Well think about it. Actually...Listen to it." I turn back to the entrance to the building, where FRIDAY can hear and speak. "Hey, FRIDAY? If anyone askes, tell them Spidey and I are going out for a bit." "Alright, Mr.Stark is questioning why your awake right now, but he says to be home before midnight." I check my watch.
It's 10:17. Let's do this.
I lean off of the Building, Peter running to catch me with his webs, before he sees me flying, wings out in the open. "Come on, Spider. It's time you learn what really happens at night."
I leave and he starts swinging behind me as I lead him towards the woods that outskirt NYC (there probably arent any but its my story and I've never been to NY) and We finally stop in a small clearing surrounded by trees, with a large flat rock in the center. I sit down on it, and he does the same.
"Alright, we're here!"
"Why are we here?"
"Sh. Don't speak, just listen."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Peter's POV~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It's odd she led me here. But I suppose it's for a reason.
"Sh. Don't speak, just listen." She says
So I shut up. I should probably take her words into consideration, considering we came all this way...Also, I kinda don't know how to get back...So there's that.
So I strain my hearing.
"Do not try so hard. Just relax. You will find it when you feel at peace." She says in an encouraging, if not slightly amused, tone.
Wow. It's amazing.
There are fireflies everywhere, flowers filling the field that are somehow more beautiful even though the colors are slightly muted. The moon is full and I hear crickets, an owl or two. Perhaps a fox as well. The wind is in my face, and since she already knows my identity, I remove my mask. The sweet smell of tree sap, flowers, and all the rest of the fauna mix in a satisfying way in my nose. I look up and Just...
Wow. Words can't describe the feeling.
I already mentioned the full moon, but there were stars everywhere. So many constellations and it was just peaceful.
I lay back, admiring the sky more. Then, she suddenly turns toward the woods on our right. She makes high-pitched noises that even I couldn't hear if it weren't for the spider bite.
Suddenly, a bat flies out and hovers in the air beside Agent Scythe. She reveals her wings and it does a loop-de-loop in the air, making those same chirping noises that she did.
She laughs, what's so funny?
"What is it? And why aren't you freaking out? There's a bat right in front of your face!"
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Tidedancer's POV~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I frown. What's so bad about bats?
"A, that's offensive and you've made him sad, apologize. B, he just told me a funny story about when he was younger, once he saw my wings."
"What? So...you can speak bat?"
"Yes, and they're amazing creatures. In Chinese culture they symbolize luck, and in other cultures they symbolize things such as dreams, journeying, Intuition, initiation, Rebirth, and inner depth."
"Whoa. Sorry mr.Bat!"
The bat chirps a few more times.
"He said he's, unfortunately, used to it and you are forgiven. And call him Umber."
"Ok Mr. Umber"
Umber chirps a few more times before giving me the bat-version of a hug, then flies off into the night.
"So did you hear and see it?"
"Yeah, nights way more underrated than I thought. Should we go back now? It's around 11:30-ish, we should probably leave or we'll miss curfew. Fortunately, tomorrow's a teacher work day, so we get Monday off. I plan on asking a few friends if they want to go swimming."
I agree, and we fly (or swing, in his case) off into the night.
