Chapter Six

The smells of the horse track were strong, but familiar. Mr. Jarvis and Peggy both seemed less than pleased with them at first and didn't understand why I wasn't nearly as grossed out as them.

But that would be diving into my banned questions, which everyone has to abide by but only Sousa knows about them, so I shook them off and got us on track.

Ha, on track. I giggled to myself.

The music was blaring but I didn't find myself too annoyed with it. It was that 'big band' music that everyone loved so much.

"Where's Calvin Chadwick?" I mumbled, looking around the crowd. Peggy was looking along with me, but Mr. Jarvis seemed lost.

"Who is Mr. Chadwick? Why are we searching for him?" Mr. Jarvis asked.

Peggy started forward, which was out toward the track, and we followed after her. And there he was, Calvin Chadwick alongside his wife (who looked rather familiar), taking pictures with the winning horse. Their smiles were practiced to perfection and I blinked, seeing my parents at a much younger age in their place.

"That is Calvin Chadwick," Peggy answered, and we watched as he placed a kiss on his wife's cheek. My eyes narrowed. I wasn't buying the act as quickly as everyone else here.

I saw Mr. Jarvis light up. "Oh, and his wife, Whitney Frost," he said.

I snapped. "That's why she looks familiar!"

"Who?" Peggy asked at nearly the same time.

Mr. Jarvis and I whipped our heads to show her our shocked expressions. "Whitney Frost. Star of The 'F' Stands for Freedom," Mr. Jarvis explained.

Peggy looked at us and then back to Whitney Frost. "She doesn't look familiar," she said.

"Have you seen Tales of Suspense?" I asked.

She just shook her head and hummed. "I'm not one for the cinema," Peggy answered, still keeping her eye on the happy couple. I saw them shake the hand of the winning jockey before he started to walk away.

Mr. Jarvis frowned deeply at Peggy. "What do you do for relaxation? Assemble rifles?"

"I trust you to distract her with your flattery," Peggy said instead of answering Mr. Jarvis.

He gave her a look, one of confidence but also shocked she ever felt the need to ask. "Aside from 'Danger,' my middle name is 'Charm.'"

Mr. Jarvis fixed his tie, sniffed, and walked away. Peggy and I gave each other looks, and I nearly burst into laughter, before we followed him. It luckily wasn't too hard to get down, off the stands and into the grass where they were standing.

Mr. Jarvis walked up first, Peggy and I by his side. "Excuse me, Miss Frost? Edwin Jarvis." She turned away from her husband and toward Mr. Jarvis, shaking his outstretched hand. "Head of production, Stark Pictures."

"Oh. Charmed," she replied. Her husband had looked over at Peggy and I, but Whitney Frost had yet to look away from Mr. Jarvis.

Mr. Jarvis looked to Peggy and I then back to the actress. "Might I have a word?"

She looked to Calvin Chadwick, who gave a small nod, then let herself be guided away. Peggy and I'd turn.

"Mr. Chadwick," Peggy started, her American accent being put to good use, "I am one of your biggest advocates for Senate." She held her hand for a shake.

I jumped in. "We were very excited to have a chance to catch you out, it's such a rarity, being able to speak with you." My smile was bold and bright and worked out very well. He smiled right back and shook our hands, holding onto mine.

"What a delight, to see such attractive young women like yourselves interested in politics," he said.

"If you don't beat that ugly old representative Anderson, California is gonna go to hell in a hand basket!" Peggy added. She was good at schmoozing. We all laughed.

"I think I need you on my campaign committee," he said.

We smiled at each other. "Well, just the other day we were extolling your virtues to a dear friend of ours. Well, we actually talk to so many of them!" We laughed again. "Who was it the other day? Oh, we had such a wonderful conversation."

Peggy nodded. "Ah! Jane Scott," she said, and I nodded my head as if the name had ever evaded me. I carefully watched for Calvin's reply.

He hesitated, his smile even fading a bit. "Yes. Well, um..." I kept an eye without seeming to be fishing for anything. To keep him talking. "Thank you for your support." He dropped my hand and started to turn away. He only made it a few steps.

"Are you aware that Miss Scott is dead?" Peggy asked, the American accent dropped and her agent demeanor back on.

Calvin stopped and turned back toward up, taking a few steps back. "Who did you say you are, miss?" he asked her. He grabbed our arms and started to lead us away from the public.

"Agent Tiffany Jones."

"Agent Peggy Carter. We're with the SSR." His gaze lingered on me for a millisecond before he looked back at Peggy. "When was the last time you saw Miss Scott?" she plowed on.

"Is it SSR protocol to surprise people with the death notices of their employees?" he asked, the charming politician gone.

"It's our understanding she was more privileged than just any employee," I said, raising an eyebrow. "Is your wife aware you were having an affair?"

He raised his hand to my mouth, trying to quiet my words before they could reach his wife, who wasn't too far away from us. "Would you please be careful?" he asked, his own voice low.

"So you admit to it?" I asked.

Calvin shook his head adamantly. "I never said that?"

"Then why should I be quiet?"

"Mr. Chadwick," Peggy broke in, "if you have nothing to hide, you'll hand over a complete list of employees at Isodyne Energy."

"I'm a patriot, and I would gladly help, but Isodyne Energy deals in classified and confidential United States government contracts." He recovered a bit too nicely for my liking. "If you get proper clearance, I will give you a tour myself. Both of you. And in the meantime, I have to collect my winnings."

His smile had returned all to easily while I felt myself sagging ever so slightly. Calvin started to walk away. "Have a good day, Miss Carter. And Miss Jones, I used to know your parents back in New York. I'm sorry for your loss."

I nearly choked on the air I was breathing. He fully turned away and went to grab Whitney Frost away from Mr. Jarvis's distraction.

Peggy's hand suddenly made it's way to my shoulder, but I shrugged it off quickly. "I'm fine," I said, moving away. "We should get moving."

I went and walked past the distraction. "Mr. Jarvis, our horse lost," I said as I passed by with Peggy in tow.

"Oh, no. We'll be in touch Miss Frost!"

He ran after us, leaving the confused actress and her shady husband.

As we got farther away from the crowds, Peggy caught up. "Tiffany, are you alright?" she tried.

"We should get going, let Sousa know where we're at. Which is nowhere closer to an answer," I said instead. "I wonder if the Detective has anything either."

"Tiffany!"

We were almost at Mr. Jarvis's car. "Please, Peggy. Not now. Not... just not now," I said, still not turning around.

Luckily, it worked, and she dropped the subject. We all got back into Mr. Jarvis's car— well, probably more like Howard's car— and drove off. We would have to get back to the office quickly.

Sitting in the back seats, alone with my thoughts as LA passed us by, I let myself feel the ache for a moment. I wasn't all that shocked that he had known who they were. Political circles and business circles would've brought them together. But for him to know me? Or even to just nail that lucky guess right on the head?

I really hoped we would get somewhere quick with this case, because much more from this life that I tried to run from and I would pull my hair out.

A/n: I head back to school soon (for my last year of college holy shit) and I'm like... partially packed but also partially scattered all over the place. Like, there's a few things I never needed to unpack and a few things I did. So I'll have to work on that.

Hope you guys liked this chapter! I love finding ways for a character (or two) to haunt the narrative >:)  Please leave a comment and/or vote! It makes my day when y'all do :)
