Chapter Five
I was extremely grateful when Peggy called Mr. Jarvis to take us to Howard's estate to change. While I haven't had the chance to visit this track, I had been to the Kentucky Derby a couple times, before...
The thoughts of grief started to make their way up. I pushed them down just as quickly. No need for that right this moment, maybe I could deal with it later.
"My wife, Ana, has a very modern sense of style." I smiled at Mr. Jarvis, his love for his wife was amazing and honestly enviable. Squashing any thoughts from going dangerous places, I focused back on what he was saying. "I'm certain she'll pick out the perfect outfit for you for a covert operation at the races."
"She's your stylist, what can go wrong?" Peggy asked.
I was going to add on, but then Mr. Jarvis slammed on the breaks. The tires squealed as we halted rather suddenly. When I looked at him, he was looking off to the right, past Peggy. So I looked as well.
"Is that a... flamingo?" A squawk. "A... flamingo?"
"I couldn't maneuver him into the enclosure," Mr. Jarvis said after meeting Peggy and I'd gazes. He then turned back to the road. "He's the devil in pink."
I raised an eyebrow. "Have you really let yourself be defeated by a bird?" I asked, highly amused.
Mr. Jarvis answered by speeding away and up to the front of the house.
As we drove up, I remember the last time I had come here. It was only my second visit and Howard ended up not being there, but I ran into Mrs. Jarvis. Ana, she insists. I was having a harder bout of grief and didn't know what to do. I was lucky Ana did.
The inklings of grief from earlier were trying to work their way up, but I simply had too much to worry about to let it consume me. Peggy's reaction to the house distracted me, thankfully.
"My goodness," she breathed.
"Mr. Stark is a firm believer in flaunting what he has."
Mr. Jarvis parked the car and we all got out. I was excited to see Ana again, but let Peggy lead the way. Once inside, Mr. Jarvis called for her.
Peggy and I turned a corner into a room and saw Ana as she did the same. She gasped when she saw us. "Miss Carter and Miss Jones are here," Mr. Jarvis said.
I smiled at her as she looked excitedly at us both. "Miss Carter, I feel like I already know you!" She came over and pulled a surprised Peggy into a hug. She awkwardly laughed through it, but she'd have to get used to it.
"She hugs," Mr. Jarvis said to Peggy. Then, Ana let go. "She does not hug."
"But I do," I said, and Ana just as happily pulled me into a bone-crushing hug. There was something almost healing about Ana Jarvis's hugs, something that made me feel much more relaxed.
"It's a pleasure to finally meet," Peggy said to Ana after we were finally done hugging.
"Yes!"
Mr. Jarvis looked at us. "Well, I'll give you three some privacy."
As he started walking away, Ana turned to him. "Excuse me Mr. Jarvis." When he stopped and turned, she beckoned he returned.
He came back over and offered quick apologetic glances before Ana pulled him by the tie into a rather passionate kiss. Although, he didn't seem to be complaining. Peggy and I, on the other hand, looked at each other with awkwardness and embarrassment painted on our faces.
I held in my laugh as Mr. Jarvis finally came up for air. He looked at us, apologetic once more, and said, "She's an embarrassing creature." Finally, he walked off.
Once he was gone, Ana let out a laugh. "He's too easy."
I laughed with her and moved to look at the outfits she was laying out on the bed. "What's that look?" Ana asked, and I turned to see Peggy still looked rather bewildered.
"She probably didn't think you were this light and bubbly," I answered with a bright smile. Who could ever be sad around Mrs. Ana Jarvis?
Ana looked at me with a playful eyebrow raise. "Oh, probably expecting Mr. Jarvis in a girdle," she said which caused me to laugh out loud.
"Precisely," Peggy said, laughing herself.
"Well," Ana started as she came over to look at what she put on the bed, "from his tales of your heroics, I was picturing a circus strongman in a wig." She and I giggled at that— Ana had a very similar description when she first met me.
We continued onto the important question: what are we wearing to the horse track? "I've selected a few potential ensembles for the racetrack, but I've also sewed you... these."
Ana had gone over to pull something out of the dresser drawer, two black strappy things. I was rather confused, even when she held one out to me and the other to Peggy.
"What is it?" Peggy asked.
"A garter?" My eyebrows shot to my hairline. Then, Ana pulled out a tiny pistol. "That's also a holster."
I gasped and snagged mine quickly from her hands. Peggy looked just as excited as me. "You are fantastic," she fawned. Peggy then snatched hers, and Ana walked away to close to the drawer with a laugh.
"Shall we play a bit of dress up?" I asked Peggy, holding one of the green dresses up.
She smiled. "Oh, I certainly think we must. But very quickly!" We giggled and Ana started her work. She would hold a dress up to either of us and either tilt her head or shake her head. Peggy and I made sure to pose accordingly as well as give notes.
We were all such giggling messes and I felt a warmth in my chest. This. I had missed this. Being with Peggy and being happy. Even just being with some girls and not having to worry about the big things in life. I hadn't had a moment like this since...
Someone snapped and I blinked rapidly. "What do you think of this one?" Peggy asked. Ana must've snapped to get my attention when calling out my name wasn't working. She was now holding up a gorgeous red dress to Peggy that had a matching hat.
"Amazing! I think you could get a confession in that thing," I said, my smile brightening.
Peggy took the dress from Ana's hand and turned to look at it in the mirror. Her eyebrows raised and she smiled as she looked. "I will certainly have to try," she mumbled.
Ana then picked up a beautiful emerald green dress, a much better shade than the one I picked up as a joke earlier. It made me halt, however. It reminded me of a dress I had worn when I was with...
"Oh Tiffany, you must wear that," Ana said as she held it up to me.
Even Peggy turned and hummed. "That's beautiful, I'm sure that would be perfect."
But I shook my head. "No, I..." I couldn't explain the real reason, how a color was making me think of him. "We'd— we'd look like Christmas the pair of us in red and green," I said. "It would be best if I didn't wear green."
"Very well," Ana said, and she set the dress aside. "How about this blue one? It matches your eyes!"
I looked over at Peggy and a million thoughts raced through my head in hopes they would make it to her. By the look she already had on her face, she understood why I said no. With the look that formed on her face, she knew not to push.
"I think that would be stunning," she said. "Please tell me there's a hat."
In the end, Peggy did, in fact, look stunning in her red dress and hat. I ended up in a lighter blue dress that wasn't quite as form-fitting as Peg's with a white hat.
Mr. Jarvis followed his wife into the room. "Ah! You ladies look quite marvelous, I must say."
"Thank you, Mr. Jarvis," I replied, smoothing a wrinkle that didn't exist— Ana already took care of all of those.
Peggy smiled at him and mirrored my sentiments. "Shall we get going?"
Then, we were off to find Calvin Chadwick.
