Chapter 45 // Drunk
Adelaide's Point of View
My muscles relaxed underneath the constant bubbling of the water being spewed out from the jets. I leaned my head backwards so my neck was pressed against the plastic rim of the hot tub. I let my eyes close for a few moments as I appreciated the heat that was now surrounding me.
"This is probably the best part of the house," Ashton mused, lifting a glass bottle of beer up to his lips and gulping it down.
"You guys should have been enjoying the hot tub then instead of creeping on Cal and I," I sneered, rolling my eyes in annoyance since I was still bitter about their actions.
"Maybe you two should have actually taken a shower or taken a nap like you planned on doing instead of lying," Luke shot right back, taking a swig of his own can of beer, and raising his eyebrows at me.
I reached out and took the can from the shirtless blonde sitting next to me, sipping the alcohol without even asking him first. The taste burned the back of my throat since I haven't had any in a long time now, but I figured it was a well-deserved celebration as a new home renter. I could feel Calum's uneasy gaze on me which made me hand the can that Ashton had purchased right back over to its owner.
Ashton chuckled. "Luke, you're just mad that you're not the one making Addy moan like that."
I instantly splashed water up at his face after that comment left his mouth. The eldest boy was still giggling as per usual, and Luke was grinning at me with a mischievous look in his blue irises. His hand found it's way to my bare leg underneath the jacuzzi water and he trailed his palms up my thighs. "I bet I could though, baby," Luke stated, biting his lip ring and shooting a wink in my direction.
Calum instinctively wrapped his arms around my waist and pulled me onto his lap before I even had a chance to react to his best friend's suggestive behavior. "That's enough, Hemmings," Calum barked.
Luke just smiled innocently, letting out a nervous chuckle as he finished off his beer and cracked open another one. "I'm just playing, Cal."
"I know, but still." Calum huffed, hugging me closer to him. I could faintly feel the outlines of his abs through my back as he snuggled his head into the crook of my neck.
"I love you," I whispered to him, just to reassure him that Blondie's jokes had no effect on our relationship. I rotated my head to the side, kissing his cheek.
"Okay, lovebirds, can you stop being cute?" Ashton groaned, turning the dial on the side of the hot tub so that more of the jets would be turned on. A roar of water echoed throughout our new backyard.
The three boys slipped into another nonsense conversation like they alwaya did, this time discussing who would be killed first in a horror movie. I shifted my body so I could curl up into Calum's side, feeling the heat radiate from his body. He wasn't as quiet as he was earlier, and the awkwardness from Luke's flirtatious behavior had diminished.
After about fifteen minutes of soaking in the jacuzzi and laughing along with the guys, I finally climbed out of the hot tub and swaddled my body in a towel to absorb the excess water. A gust of the late evening wind made me shiver as I was brought back to normal temperature. "Can we have a bonfire? It's cold tonight," I suggested, figuring that spending our night cuddled up around a fire would be perfect.
"That's a great idea," Calum agreed, placing his hands on the edge of the hot tub and leaping over it so his feet were now on the small little patio area. His board shorts were clinging onto his body, making the outline of his toned thighs clearly visible. He snatched a towel as the others followed him out of the jacuzzi and wiped off his shirtless body. "I'll go set up the fire pit."
"I'm going to get changed and get some snacks," I declared, since all my mind seemed to care about was food.
I headed inside the house, making a beeline for my bedroom. I closed the door tightly and rid myself of my wet bikini, carrying it over to the bathroom and hanging it up on a hook in the shower to dry. I didn't even bother putting on a bra afterwards, I always hate wearing them anwyays, and I put on Calum's heather grey pullover sweatshirt with the words No Morals written across the front of it. It was baggy and cozy and the fleece inside of the sleeves tickled my skin and it smelled just like him. My legs were still exposed as I put on some underwear and athletic shorts.
Ashton was in the kitchen, pouring some orange juice and vodka into two glasses. He smiled at me, gesturing towards the drinks. "Do you want one, Addy?"
"No that's okay, I'll just have a sip of yours," I told him with a shrug, bending down to get out some graham crackers, marshmallows, and chocolate to make S'mores.
I collected all of the ingredients in my arms and followed the 21-year-old, who was gripping onto the beverages and the glass bottle of vodka, out the door towards the backyard. The fire had already started in the black outdoor pit, and two benches were circled around it.
Calum grinned down at me as he realized I was wearing his sweatshirt, and he wrapped one arm around my shoulder, pressing a kiss to my forehead. "You look great in my clothes," He mumbled, taking the bag of marshmallows from me and ripping the plastic open. "Do you want me to toast one for you?"
I shook my head, taking the fluffy cylinder-like junk food out of of the bag and sticking it onto the end of the stick. "Are you kidding me? I'm perfectly capable of toasting the best marshmallow ever, thank you," I said confidently, making his grin spread even further.
My marshmallow was hovering above the flames now as I took a seat on the bench. "Whoa, that fire is so hot!" Luke yelled randomly, pointing at the bonfire that was in front of us. He chuckled at himself. "So hot. Just like me."
"Don't touch it," Calum ordered in a protective tone, placing a hand on Luke's shoulder to tug him away from the blazing flames. "You're an idiot when you're drunk."
Luke swatted Calum's hand away as he gulped down his mixed drink, slamming the glass cup onto the bench next to him and reaching for the bottle to refill it. "I'm fineee, Callie-Wallie," Luke slurred, dragging out the words in a sing-song voice. I couldn't help but giggle.
"Jesus Christ. I can't wait to tell you what you just called me tomorrow," Calum responded in amusement, practically snorting at his beyond tipsy friend. He plopped down on the bench next to me, taking out his own marshmallow to roast. "I'm going to make a better s'more than you, Ad."
"I doubt it," I fought back, removing my marshmallow away from the fire and examining it. The outer layer was now covered in a golden brown color and was very warm. I pressed two graham crackers against its edges to get it off of the branch and smiled proudly at my work of art. "Want to try it?"
Calum nodded, allowing me to lift the tiny sandwich up to his lips. He carefully took a bite of it then passed the s'more over to me. "It was delicious, baby," He confirmed, just as I began to eat it as well.
"I agree."
"Can I have some?" Ashton asked politely, his hazel eyes glimmering with hope. I nodded my head, causing my brown hair to cascade down my back like a waterfall, and walked over towards him. I gave Ashton the remaining snack as I took his drink from him, switching off. The orange juice thankfully masked the flavor of the alcohol. "It's good, right? I should be a bartender."
I laughed, picturing the curly haired boy all frazzled as he scrambled to make all of the customers their drinks. I tipped the bottom up, slurping the last of it down. "Yeah, I like it a lot. Let's party!"
Ashton and Luke let out a loud cheer, both of them high-fiving me as another eruption of laughter exploded.
Calum sighed, flicking his burnt marshmallow into the midst of the crackling wood as he stood up. "I'm pretty tired. I think I'm just going to go to bed. I have to get up early tomorrow to call my parents anyways."
A flicker guilt traveled through me as I handed the cup back to Ashton. My eyes met Calum's, and he smiled sadly. I knew he felt left-out since he was the only one who wasn't celebrating with a drink. Even though his shirt claimed that he had no morals, he still stuck by his vow to never drink again since he was fully aware of the dangers that came with it. Nevertheless, I'm sure he still wishes he could just join everyone without worrying about the consequences or having another nervous breakdown.
I strolled towards him before he could enter the house and placed my palms on his hips. "I'm sorry. I'm not going to drink anymore tonight. I just wanted a little bit. Why don't you stay and hang out with everyone?"
He shook his head, leaning down to kiss my lips. "No, I'm actually kind of exhausted. It's been a long day of moving in. You can have fun with the boys though, okay? Don't worry about me. Just make sure Hemmings doesn't do anything stupid."
"Okay," I obliged, faking a grin even though I could tell he wasn't as exhausted as he claimed to be. "I love you, Cal."
"I love you more, Ad," He assured me, kissing me again. "Goodnight, baby."
"Goodnight. I won't stay out here too long, alright?" I called as his body began to wiggle between the door. I felt selfish for not following him, but I wanted to be able to celebrate our new house and have some fun. It was only around nine o'clock at nigh which was too early for me to head inside.
I returned back to my seat, picking up on the conversation between the very drunk Luke and the tipsy Ashton which resulted in me chuckling until my sides began to hurt. I couldn't even tell you what exactly we were laughing at anymore, but just seeing them in this state as we were surrounded by a fire was funny enough.
As the night quickly carried on, Ashton had apparently disappeared right when Luke and I started dancing and singing along to classic rock hits that have been blasting throughout the speakers. I was too busy pretending to be in Bon Jovi to notice that he was gone, and I turned down the radio when I realized it must have been late at night now. I hope our new neighbors wouldn't be filing any noise complaints.
Luke was panting, trying to catch his breath after laughing hysterically. "We should probably go inside," I told him, pouring some water onto the flames and watching the smoke increase as the fire was slowly extinguished.
I put Luke's arm around my shoulder as I helped him walk inside without stumbling, since he was extremely off-balance. I let his heavy body collapse onto our sofa, and he pulled me down onto the spot next to him with one hand, while his other hand was still clutching the bottle of vodka that he had been downing.
I cupped my hands around the bottle as he tried to take another swig of it, taking it out of his grip and placing it on the coffee table in front of us. He whined. "No, no, no, you've had way too much already," I explained, my motherly side coming out.
His blonde quiff touched my neck as Luke sloppily rested his head onto my shoulder, scooting closer to me. "You know what's weird, Ad-duh-layyyyd?"
I giggled at his dramatic pronounciation, finding this entire situation highly entertaining. "What's weird, Lukey?"
"We're in our house right now. And other people are in their own houses. So there are like, lots and lots of houses. Which means the aliens up in space probably think we're all houses and not people."
"Okay, you're definitely hammered," I pointed out, chuckling at how amusing he was tonight.
Luke's arms encircled around my waist as he snuggled me even closer to him, squeezing me tightly. "You're my favorite girl, Addy," He cooed, leaving a sloppy kiss on my jaw. "I always think about how different things would have turned out if you actually kissed me that day."
"What day?" I repeated, knitting my eyebrows together in complete confusion.
"The day you were trying to make Calum jealous so he would ask you out," He hummed, closing his eyes as if he was reliving the memory. I remembered it very well and I apologized to Luke for using him, but I never expected him to bring up something so miniscule. "You're probably a really good kisser. You probably bake yummy cookies too. Calum is so lucky that he gets to date you, Addy-Bo-Baddy."
I laughed again, sitting up straighter and inching further away from him since he had went through a sudden change from being disoriented and loony to talking about things that were actually relevant. "You'll find someone who is a good kisser and a good cookie baker too, Luke."
"Mmm, but why would I go look for someone else when the most beautiful girl is right in front of me?" Luke said happily, smirking at me.
Before I even could process what was going on, Luke was leaning in closer to me. His bright blue eyes that resembled swimming pools were locked on my lips, but he would occasionally glance up to make eye contact with me. His thumb was caressing my cheekbone while his other palm was holding onto my hip. "Luke," I whispered breathlessly, trying to snap him out of this trance as my heart continued to race.
Without any warning, he crashed his lips against mine. His lips were soft and had the absence of chapped craters covering their surface and they were moving in circles. He obviously knew what he was doing, even when he was drunk, which was tempting, but I didn't dare let myself kiss him back.
My eyes quickly shot open as I placed my hands against his chest and gave him a hard push off of me. The kiss barely lasted even a second, but it was enough to make me want to burst into tears. "What the hell is wrong with you?" I screamed, slapping him right across the face. "Calum is your best friend!"
"I don't know, I just thought-"
"No, shut up. I always thought you flirting with me was just a joke to tease Calum. I can't believe you actually just kissed me! Oh my God, Luke, what have you done!" I screeched in frustration, feeling the hot tears begin to form in my eyes. He sat there, dumbfounded, just watching me begin go cry. "Just leave me alone!"
Luke nervously dashed off towards the staircase, tripping over his own feet every once in awhile. I lifted my fingers to my eyes, trying to dry them, but it didn't work. I was feeling so guilty. I should have went inside earlier. I should have stopped Luke from drinking anymore. I should have pushed him away from me sooner. I should have smacked him for even bringing up kissing me. I should have stopped all of this.
I sucked in a deep breath, still crying just simply because I felt like a terrible girlfriend who regretted every single thing that I didn't do to prevent this from happening. I twisted the knob to our bedroom off the living room, hoping that Calum was asleep so I wouldn't have to view his face completely drop.
Unfortunately, Calum was still awake with his iPhone out in front of him and the screen illuminating his face in the dark room. He glimpsed over to me, jumping up to his feet and tossing his phone onto the nightstand. "Baby, what's wrong? Why are you crying? Are you hurt? What happened, Ad?"
His palms grasped my shoulders as he searched my face for some kind of answer. I probably looked like a mess as I sobbed like a fool. I exhaled loudly. "Calum, Luke- Luke just, well he," I paused, swallowing the lump in my throat so I could speak properly. "Luke just kissed me."
