When I was young, so long ago

The girl that I would marry, I'd just begun to know

and for the first big date, the day had come;

a formal dance at the high school prom

The gown she would wear was blue

and the flowers I would buy I knew

For admiration and love, white and light red,

with a seductive scent that played with the head

A semi Windsor knot in my brand new tie,

a shoe shine meant to dazzle the eye

And secure in a cellophane wrapping with tissue,

I held my purchase extended for her to preview

On her front porch I stood nervous and sweating,

her father I had yet to meet

then the door opened and her smile lit the night

and she bade me her father to greet

More nervous than ever, I faltered

a state I could not camouflage,

and in a moment of pure, comedic folly

I gave him the intended, carnation corsage
