Chapter 4
Mia, taking a bite of her pizza, the familiar taste a welcome comfort, tilted her head in curiosity. "So, the Mechanic was in Mom's lab," she said, her voice muffled slightly by the cheesy goodness. "What was he doing there?"
Jay, olives dangling precariously from his lips, froze mid-chew. His eyes widened momentarily before he swallowed, forcing a nonchalant shrug. "Uh, well, you see..." he stammered, his gaze darting around the room as if searching for an escape route. "The Mechanic, he's, uh, kind of a... collector."
Mia raised an eyebrow skeptically. "A collector of what, exactly? Top-secret ninja research?"
Zane, ever the voice of reason, interjected from across the table. "It's more likely he was after a specific artifact, Mia. One that may have piqued his interest for... nefarious purposes."
"Nefarious purposes, huh?" Mia echoed, her voice taking on a determined edge. "Well, then maybe we should pay the good ol' Mechanic a visit and see what he's been tinkering with."
Jay choked on his pizza, coughing violently as he sputtered out a denial. "Wait, Mia, hold on a sec! Visiting the Mechanic is a bad idea, a really bad idea!"
Mia, however, was no longer in the mood for arguments. The revelation about the lighthouse, the shared grief, and the renewed trust had ignited a spark within her. She wouldn't sit back while their parents' research fell into the wrong hands.
"Look, Jay," she said, her voice firm, "I understand you're worried, but we can't just ignore this. Mom's work was important, and if the Mechanic is after it, then it's probably something dangerous. We have to stop him."
Zane, after a moment of contemplation, nodded in agreement. "Mia is right, Jay. We can't allow the Mechanic to exploit your mother's research for his own gain. However, a direct confrontation might not be the wisest course of action."
A mischievous glint sparked in Mia's eyes. "So, we need a plan? A sneaky, ninja-style plan to infiltrate the Mechanic's junkyard and retrieve whatever he stole?"
Jay groaned, a playful smile tugging at the corner of his lips. "Here we go again," he muttered, shaking his head mock-dramatically.
Despite his reservations, a thrill of excitement coursed through him. Mission planning, sneaking around, and facing a villain – it was all part of the ninja life they shared. And with Mia back on the team, their little trio felt complete once more.
"Alright, alright," he conceded, a grin spreading across his face. "Let's hear this plan of yours, Mimi. Just promise me it won't involve any giant inflatable ducks this time."
Mia's eyes sparkled with laughter.
" No," She said with a mischievous grin. " It's way better."
Later....
Mia's grin stretched from ear to ear, a stark contrast to the terrified expressions of her teammates. They were hurtling through a swirling vortex of scrap metal, courtesy of one of the Mechanic's more "creative" security measures – a giant, trash-compacting hurricane.
"WOOHOO!" she shouted, her voice barely audible over the deafening clang of metal and the terrified screams of Jay and Zane. "This is AWESOME!"
"MIA, THIS WAS A BAD IDEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!" Jay shrieked, his voice high-pitched with panic as he clung desperately to a stray pipe.
"I AGREE WITH YOUR BROTHER'S EXCLAMATION, MIA!" Zane bellowed, his metallic voice strained. "HOW IS THIS BENIFICIAL?!"
Mia, however, remained unfazed. With a practiced flick of her wrist, she channeled her power, weaving a shimmering blue energy shield around herself. The debris bounced harmlessly off the barrier, providing her with a much-needed bubble of calm amidst the metallic chaos.
"Relax, guys!" she called out, her voice laced with humor. "A little turbulence never hurt anyone... well, maybe except for you, Zane, with all those delicate circuits."
A sputter of indignation came from Zane, momentarily lost in the cacophony of noise. Jay, however, found a sliver of amusement amidst his terror.
"Easy for you to say, Super-Shield-Girl!" he yelled back, his voice laced with a hint of playful defiance.
Despite the perilous situation, a familiar spark of camaraderie flickered between them. This wasn't how they planned to infiltrate the Mechanic's junkyard, but then again, nothing ever went according to plan when Mia was involved.
Suddenly, a particularly large chunk of scrap metal hurtled towards Mia's shield, threatening to breach its defenses. She concentrated, pouring more power into the barrier, the swirl of blue energy intensifying.
But the strain was evident. A bead of sweat trickled down her forehead. Maintaining the shield while navigating the hurricane was taking its toll.
Just as she thought she might reach her limit, a metallic arm shot out from the debris, catching the offending chunk and flinging it away. It was Zane, his entire form encased in a makeshift metal shell, cobbled together from scrap metal during the whirlwind ride.
"Thank... you..." Mia gasped, momentarily speechless.
"Don't mention it," Zane replied, his voice muffled through the metal shell. "Now, shall we focus on finding a way out of this... contraption before we all end up recycled?"
Mia grinned, a surge of determination replacing her earlier bravado. "You got it, Zane. Just lead the way, Metal Zane!"
With renewed purpose, they worked together, Zane using his newfound metal form to navigate the debris field, Mia using her shield to create a path through the storm. Jay, still clinging to his pipe for dear life, could only offer a string of muttered curses and envious glances at their newfound teamwork.
The path ahead was uncertain, the dangers far from over. But as they battled through the metallic hurricane, a sense of unity and purpose bloomed within them. They were a team, a family, and together, they could overcome any obstacle, even a giant, trash-compacting hurricane.
A glint of recognition flashed in Mia's eyes as a familiar machine whirred into view amidst the swirling debris. It wasn't just any machine; it was a complex contraption she'd seen countless times in her mother's lab, its intricate design etched into her memory.
"That's it!" she yelled over the din, her voice laced with excitement. "The modulator matrix! If I can reconfigure it..."
Before she could finish her thought, Jay's terrified shriek cut through the air. "Mia, no time for science experiments! We gotta get outta here!"
But Mia was already on the move. With a surge of agility, she propelled herself towards the modulator matrix, dodging the chaotic dance of scrap metal. Reaching out with a hand encased in her shimmering blue shield, she ripped the machine from its precarious perch.
The hurricane intensified, the metallic vortex groaning in protest as a vital component was removed. Seizing the opportunity, Mia channeled her power once more. This time, however, the energy wasn't directed towards defense. It flowed from her hand, wrapping around the modulator matrix, weaving a intricate pattern of pink light.
"Airjitzu!" she cried, pouring all her concentration into the technique.
The modulator matrix, pulsating with Mia's energy, transformed into a makeshift air vehicle. A shimmering pink platform materialized beneath their feet, lifting them out of the metallic maelstrom.
Jay and Zane, who had been clinging desperately to random pieces of debris, scrambled onto the platform with panicked yelps. Just as they did, the hurricane sputtered and died, the metallic vortex collapsing in on itself with a resounding clang.
They hovered precariously above a mountain of scrap metal, the silence broken only by their ragged breaths and the frantic whirring of Zane's makeshift metal shell.
"Whoa," Jay breathed, his voice tinged with awe. "You... you airjitsu-ed with a machine?"
Mia grinned, a hint of sheepishness creeping into her expression. "Uh, yeah. I wasn't sure if it would work, but..."
"It worked," Zane interjected, his voice regaining its usual calm. "In a... most unorthodox way, but effective nonetheless."
He flexed his metal arm, then winced as a gear protested the movement. "However, I suggest we find a more... conventional mode of transportation before my impromptu armor falls apart."
Mia chuckled, relief washing over her. They were safe, for now. And more importantly, they had the modulator matrix, a key piece to whatever puzzle her mother had been working on.
"Lead the way, Metal Zane," she said, her voice brimming with newfound confidence. "We've got a monetary to return to. And, in the best way possible!"
