Chapter 2

The morning sun cast a weak glow through the leaves of the oak tree, painting dappled patterns on Mia's tear-stained face. Exhausted and emotionally drained, she lay on the cool grass, Blackie curled up contentedly on her chest, a rumbling purr the only sound breaking the silence.

The previous night's events played on a loop in her mind – the accusation, the terrifying transformation, the way she'd lost control and lashed out at her friends. Shame gnawed at her, a bitter taste in her mouth.

Just then, a panicked scream pierced the morning air, jolting Mia awake. Her heart hammered in her chest as she scrambled to her feet, Blackie leaping down in a flurry of black fur.

"What was that?" Jay's voice, laced with urgency, echoed from somewhere deeper in the training grounds. Mia followed the sound, her bare feet slapping against the dew-kissed grass.

They emerged into a clearing, and the sight that greeted them sent a fresh wave of horror coursing through Mia. Cole lay sprawled on the ground, his face contorted in pain, his arm twisted at an unnatural angle.

"Cole!" Jay cried, rushing to his side. The others, faces etched with worry, crowded around the injured ninja.

"What happened?" Mia whispered, the question catching in her throat.

Kai, his expression grim, pointed towards a figure perched precariously on the edge of the roof – Nya. Her face, usually a mask of stoicism, was contorted in a snarl of rage. Her hand clutched a broken piece of wood, the weapon used to inflict Cole's injury no doubt.

"Nya!" Jay called out, his voice laced with disbelief. "What are you doing?"

Nya didn't answer. Her emerald eyes blazed with an unnatural intensity, mirroring the monstrous transformation Mia had experienced just hours ago. With a guttural roar, she raised the makeshift weapon high above her head.

"You betrayed us, Mia!" she screamed, her voice distorted with fury. "Now you'll pay!"

Before anyone could react, Nya lunged forward, the broken wood aimed straight for Cole's head. Time seemed to slow down for Mia. Panic surged through her, a primal urge to protect her friend overriding the fear and exhaustion that still clung to her.

In a heartbeat, Mia was moving. A surge of energy coursed through her, and with a speed that defied explanation, she launched herself between Nya and Cole. The impact sent them both flying – Mia crashing to the ground, the wind knocked out of her lungs, and Nya landing in a heap a few feet away.

The broken piece of wood clattered harmlessly to the ground. Cole, thankfully, was unconscious, but alive. Mia lay there, gasping for breath, a horrifying realization dawning on her.

The transformation wasn't isolated. It was spreading. And this time, it had infected Nya.

The scene unfolded in a blur of motion. Nya, her eyes burning with an unnatural green fire, clutched a familiar roll of black parchment in her hand – the Forbidden Scroll of Spinjitzu. A chilling laugh escaped her lips, a sound devoid of Nya's usual warmth and laced with a manic edge.

"You think you can stop me, Mia?" she cackled, her voice distorted and unrecognizable. "The power is mine now!"

Before Mia could react, Nya lunged. Her once fluid movements were erratic and unpredictable, fueled by the uncontrolled power coursing through her. Mia, however, was no longer the same either. The fear that had gripped her moments ago had been replaced by a steely resolve. She couldn't let Nya hurt anyone else.

Mustering her newfound strength, Mia unleashed a powerful blast of wind. The invisible force struck Nya with the force of a hurricane, sending her flying backwards. She landed hard on the ground, the scroll clutched protectively in her hand.

Mia, her vision blurry but her determination unwavering, pushed herself to her feet. A surge of dizziness threatened to overwhelm her, but she ignored it. She had to reach Nya, to somehow break her free from the scroll's control.

Nya, however, was far from done. With a feral snarl, she scrambled back onto her feet, the Forbidden Scroll glowing ominously in her grasp. The wind attack seemed to have fueled her rage, twisting it into a weapon. She raised her hand, and a miniature tornado materialized at her fingertips, swirling with a dark energy that mirrored the corruption in her eyes.

Mia braced herself, her own power swirling around her. She had never used her wind manipulation on this scale before, the inexperience a terrifying disadvantage. But she had no choice. She lunged forward, a counter-tornado forming in her hands.

The two forces collided in a deafening roar. Wind whipped around them, tearing at their clothes and whipping their hair into a frenzy. The training grounds became a battleground, leaves and debris swirling in the chaotic dance of air.

Mia pushed, channeling all her focus and will into her attack. She had to overpower Nya, to break the scroll's hold before it consumed her friend completely. But Nya, fueled by the forbidden power, fought back with equal ferocity. Their tornadoes locked in a stalemate, neither one gaining the upper hand.

The training grounds became a tempestuous vortex, the wind whipping around Mia and Nya in a dizzying display of raw power. Their tornadoes, fueled by desperation and dark magic respectively, locked in a stalemate, neither one gaining dominance. Mia gritted her teeth, the strain of maintaining her power evident in the beads of sweat forming on her brow.

"This isn't working," she thought, frustration gnawing at her. She needed a new strategy, a way to overpower Nya without further escalating the destruction. Suddenly, a glint of metal caught her eye – a forgotten training rope that lay discarded near the edge of the clearing.

An idea sparked in her mind, a desperate gamble that might just work. With a deep breath, Mia focused, channeling her wind not into a destructive force, but into a tool of precision. It danced around her, weaving and swirling, taking shape with a whispered command. The wind solidified, forming a long, shimmering rope of air.

"Time to escalate," Mia muttered under her breath, a newfound determination hardening her voice. With a flick of her wrist, she launched the rope towards Nya. The wind-forged cord moved with unnatural speed, propelled by Mia's will. It snaked around Nya's thrashing form, binding her arms and legs with an unyielding grip.

A surprised yelp escaped Nya's lips as the wind rope constricted, effectively nullifying her movements. The miniature tornado at her fingertips sputtered and died, dissolving into harmless wisps of air. Mia, panting heavily, stumbled back a few paces, the exertion leaving her trembling. The wind rope, its task complete, dissipated into the air.

Nya, now immobilized, thrashed against her invisible bonds, her emerald eyes blazing with fury. "You... you cheated!" she snarled, her voice hoarse with exertion.

"There's no cheating when you're fighting someone possessed by a forbidden scroll," Mia retorted, her voice laced with exhaustion but laced with a sliver of defiance. She cautiously approached Nya, the dark energy emanating from the scroll still sending shivers down her spine.

"Nya, it's me, Mia," she said softly, kneeling beside her friend. "The scroll is controlling you. You have to fight it."

Nya's eyes flickered with a flicker of recognition, a battle raging within her emerald depths. But the hold of the scroll remained strong, its dark influence twisting her features into a grimace.

"Get... away from me," she snarled, her voice weak but laced with a dangerous edge.

Mia knew a more forceful approach wouldn't work. She needed to reach the Nya beneath the corruption, to rekindle the spark of friendship that burned within her. Taking a deep breath, she began to speak, her voice soft and soothing.

"Remember our training, Nya," she said, her words weaving a calming spell. "Remember the times we sparred, the battles we fought side by side. Remember the laughter, the friendship. That's the real you, Nya. Don't let the scroll take that away."

As Mia spoke, a flicker of warmth returned to Nya's eyes. The struggle within her intensified, the green fire battling against a soft blue glow that emanated from deep within. Slowly, almost imperceptibly, the darkness began to recede.

"Mia...?" Nya whispered, her voice trembling. A single tear rolled down her cheek, tracing a path through the grime and sweat on her face.

"It's okay, Nya," Mia said, her voice thick with emotion. "We'll get you through this. Together."

With a final surge of effort, a blinding flash of light erupted from the scroll. The Forbidden Scroll disintegrated in Nya's grasp, transforming into a pile of harmless dust that scattered in the wind. Nya slumped forward, the fight finally drained out of her.

Mia gently caught her friend as she fell, the wind rope dissolving around her as if by magic. Nya lay limp in her arms, her breathing shallow but even. The crisis was averted, for now. But the ordeal had left them both shaken and exhausted.

As the dust settled and the wind died down, the others emerged from their hiding places, their faces etched with a mixture of relief and horror. They rushed towards Mia and Nya, their expressions a silent testament to the ordeal they had just witnessed.

"Is she alright?" Kai asked, his voice barely a whisper.

Mia looked down at Nya, her friend's chest rising and falling with each shallow breath. A wave of relief washed over her, warm and welcome.

"She's unconscious," Mia said, her voice hoarse but filled with relief. "But she's alive."

The silence that followed Mia's words stretched taut, heavy with unspoken accusations and lingering fear. Kai, his face pale and drawn, stepped forward, his voice laced with a barely controlled fury.

"This is your fault, Mia!" he burst out, his words echoing harshly in the aftermath of the battle. "You brought that cursed scroll into the monastery! Look what it's done!"

Mia flinched at his accusation, a fresh wave of hurt washing over her. Tears welled up in her eyes, blurring her vision. "It wasn't my fault!" she cried, her voice cracking with emotion. "I didn't know the scroll was forbidden!"

Cole, ever the voice of reason, stepped forward, placing a calming hand on Kai's shoulder. "Kai, maybe it's time to back off of Mia," he said, his voice firm but gentle. "We need to focus on what to do next. Nya's injured, and that scroll..." He trailed off, gesturing towards the pile of dust that was once the Forbidden Scroll.

Kai took a deep breath, his anger slowly abating. Shame flickered across his face as he realized the harshness of his words. "You're right, Cole," he muttered, his gaze dropping to the ground.

But even as Kai apologized, a low growl emanated from the ground. Mia looked down to see Nya stirring, her eyes fluttering open. The warmth that had momentarily returned to her gaze was replaced by a cold flicker of anger.

"Mia," she snarled, her voice weak but laced with venom. "You... you used me."

Confusion clouded Mia's features. "What? No, Nya, I..."

"You exposed me!" Nya continued, her voice gaining strength. "You tricked me into using the scroll! You wanted to see if your little wind powers could overpower a Spinjitzu Master!"

The accusation stung. Mia stared at her friend, hurt and betrayal warring within her. "That's not true! I was trying to help you!"

But the seed of doubt had been planted. Nya's words, fueled by the lingering effects of the scroll's corruption, resonated with the others. Worried glances were exchanged, the weight of suspicion returning.

Jay, ever the loyal friend, stepped forward, placing a hand on Mia's shoulder. "Mia's telling the truth," he said, his voice firm. "We all saw what happened. She saved you, Nya."

Nya, however, remained unconvinced. She closed her eyes, a pained expression crossing her face. "I need some time alone," she whispered, her voice drained of energy.

With a sigh, she pushed herself to her feet, her movements slow and unsteady. Without another word, she turned and walked away, disappearing into the trees that bordered the training grounds.

Mia watched her go, a heavy weight settling in her chest. The ordeal had brought them to the brink of destruction, and even though the immediate threat was gone, the trust between them had been fractured. The road to healing, it seemed, would be long and arduous.

Jay attempted a lighthearted approach, his signature optimism struggling to break through the oppressive silence. "Well, on the bright side," he began, a nervous chuckle escaping his lips, "at least Nya's okay, and the scroll is gone for good, right?"

His words hung in the air, unanswered. Mia, her face etched with a mixture of exhaustion and despair, simply stared after Nya's retreating form. The weight of the accusations, the lingering fear, and the growing sense of isolation pressed down on her, smothering any spark of hope.

Without a word, she turned on her heel and bolted. Her bare feet slapped against the dusty ground, her breath coming in ragged gasps. She didn't care where she was going, as long as it was away from the accusing stares and the suffocating atmosphere.

Her feet carried her deeper into the monastery, past familiar training halls and meditation gardens, until she reached the secluded wing where Master Wu resided. Without a second thought, she flung open the ornately carved doors and stumbled inside.

Master Wu, seated on a plush cushion in the center of the room, looked up in surprise. His serene expression faltered as he took in Mia's disheveled appearance, the tears glistening on her cheeks, the raw pain etched on her face.

"Mia," he said, his voice gentle, a well of concern bubbling within him. "What troubles you, child?"

With a choked sob, Mia collapsed onto the floor at his feet, burying her face in her hands. The emotions that had been churning within her finally erupted – the fear, the betrayal, the desperate yearning for acceptance.

In a torrent of words, she poured out her heart to Master Wu, recounting the events of the morning, the terrifying transformation, Nya's accusations, the fracturing of their bond. She spoke of her helplessness, her fear that she was somehow responsible for the chaos that had unfolded.

Master Wu listened patiently, his face a mask of understanding. When Mia finished, a heavy silence descended upon the room, broken only by her soft sniffles. Finally, Master Wu spoke, his voice a soothing balm to her troubled soul.

"Patience, young one," he said, his words carrying the weight of experience. "The path of a ninja is not always an easy one. There will be times of doubt, of mistrust, of battles that rage both within and without. But a true ninja perseveres. They weather the storms, for they know that even the darkest night eventually gives way to dawn."

His words offered a glimmer of hope, a tiny spark that flickered to life within Mia's heart. Perhaps, just perhaps, there was a way to mend the broken trust, to rebuild the bond with her friends. But it wouldn't be easy. It would require time, honesty, and unwavering faith in herself and her fellow ninja.

Mia's sobs subsided into hiccups, her tear-streaked face finally peeking up at Master Wu. His words, though cryptic, offered a lifeline in the storm of emotions she was drowning in. A flicker of defiance, however, sparked within her, momentarily pushing aside the despair.

Wiping her nose with the back of her hand, she looked around the room, her gaze landing on the serene figure of Master Wu. The incongruity of his presence struck her.

"Oh, and when did you come here?" she blurted out, a hint of accusation lacing her voice. "Aren't you supposed to be resting?"

Master Wu's lips curved into a knowing smile. The question, though seemingly out of place, spoke volumes about the turmoil within her. She still cared, she still craved his guidance, even amidst the anger and frustration.

"Patience, young grasshopper," he chuckled gently. "Sometimes, the most profound lessons are learned not in isolation, but through observation." He gestured towards the ornately carved doors behind him. "Let's just say your... lively discussion with your friends did not go unnoticed."

Mia's cheeks flushed crimson as she realized the implication. Master Wu, ever wise, had witnessed the entire ordeal, from the accusations to the fight with Nya. Shame washed over her again, a wave of heat threatening to suffocate her.

"I... I didn't mean to cause trouble, Master Wu," she stammered, her voice barely a whisper. "It just... it all happened so fast."

Master Wu placed a reassuring hand on her shoulder. "I understand, Mia. Fear and mistrust can be powerful forces. But remember, the true test of a ninja lies not in their strength, but in their ability to overcome adversity with courage and compassion."

Mia's brow furrowed in confusion, a new wave of questions washing over her. Master Wu's words offered comfort and direction, but a nagging mystery remained.

"Oh, and when did I get the scroll?" she blurted out, a sliver of hope flickering inside her. Maybe, just maybe, there was a misunderstanding. "I don't remember bringing it here."

Master Wu sighed, a deep breath that echoed the weight of the situation. He knew this wouldn't be easy, knew he had to tread carefully to avoid further fracturing Mia's already fragile trust.

"Mia," he began, his voice gentle but firm, "you sleepwalked."

Mia's eyes widened in disbelief. Sleepwalking? It had happened once or twice as a child, but she hadn't experienced it in years. "Sleepwalked?" she echoed, the word sounding foreign on her lips.

"Yes," Master Wu continued, his gaze unwavering. "Last night, while you were unconscious, you wandered into the Explorers Club, a place strictly off-limits to people without their membership. Somehow, you managed to locate the Forbidden Scroll and bring it back here."

A wave of nausea washed over Mia. The Explorers Club – a whole building where explorers stored their ancient artifacts and forbidden knowledge which they received from their latest adventures. It was a place shrouded in mystery, a place she had only dared to dream of exploring. And she, apparently, had done it unconsciously.

"But... but how?" she stammered, her voice barely a whisper. The pieces of the puzzle were starting to fall into place, but the picture it painted was unsettling.

Master Wu shook his head, a hint of concern flickering in his eyes. "I do not know, Mia. Perhaps the stress of recent events manifested in this... nocturnal adventure. However, what matters now is the fact that the scroll is gone, and you are safe."

Safe, perhaps, but far from unscathed. The weight of her actions, even if unconscious, pressed down on Mia. She had violated a sacred trust, endangered herself and her friends, and unleashed a force of chaos upon the monastery. Shame threatened to consume her once again.

"I'm so sorry, Master Wu," she whispered, her voice thick with regret. "I didn't mean to cause so much trouble."

Master Wu placed a comforting hand on her shoulder. "Accidents happen, Mia. What matters is how you learn from them. This experience, though harrowing, can be a valuable lesson. It can teach you the importance of control, of understanding your own limitations."

Just then, the air crackled with nervous energy as the monastery bell clanged insistently, shattering the fragile peace that had settled after the ordeal with the scroll. Mia, her heart hammering in her chest, emerged from Master Wu's quarters, a sliver of hope clinging to her like a tattered flag. She had confessed her sleepwalking transgression, accepted responsibility for bringing the scroll back, and vowed to learn from her mistake.

However, the path to redemption wouldn't be easy. As Mia entered the main hall, she was met with a tense silence and a slew of averted gazes. Jay, Kai, and Cole stood huddled together, their faces etched with worry. But their eyes, when they finally met hers, held a flicker of something else – apprehension.

"What's going on?" Mia asked, her voice tentative. A knot of dread formed in her stomach as she sensed the unspoken fear hanging in the air.

"There's been another attack," Kai blurted out, his voice tight with urgency. "At the old abandoned lighthouse on the outskirts of Ninjago City."

Mia's breath hitched. The abandoned lighthouse – a notorious haunt for criminals and rumored to be a haven for smugglers. But why an attack? Who would be foolish enough to–

"We need to go," Cole cut in, his voice low and grim. "But..." he trailed off, his gaze shifting uncomfortably to Mia.

Mia's heart sank. She understood. The whispers of bad luck, the suspicion that had festered after the Nya incident – they hadn't vanished. Her friends, despite their loyalty, were afraid to have her on the mission.

"You're not coming, Mia," Kai finally blurted out, his voice laced with a mixture of regret and fear. "We can't risk it."

The words struck Mia like a physical blow. Here she was, desperate to prove herself, to earn back their trust, and they were pushing her away. Tears welled up in her eyes, threatening to spill over.

"But... I want to help!" she cried, her voice cracking with emotion. "I can control my powers now. I won't lose control again, I promise!"

Her pleas fell on deaf ears. Kai and Cole exchanged a worried glance, their expressions resolute. They were afraid. Afraid of her, afraid of the unknown power that resided within her, afraid that her presence might bring more chaos than help.

Mia stood there, a solitary figure in the vast hall, the sting of rejection a bitter pill to swallow. But amidst the despair, a spark of defiance ignited. She wouldn't let their fear dictate her actions. She wouldn't be a burden.

Taking a deep breath, she squared her shoulders, her voice ringing with newfound determination.

"Fine," she said, her voice surprisingly steady. "Go on your little mission. But if things go south, don't come crying to me when you need help."

With that, she spun on her heel and stormed out of the hall, leaving the stunned faces of her former teammates in her wake. They were right to be afraid. Afraid of what she might become. But they were wrong to underestimate her. Mia, fueled by a potent mix of anger and determination, was about to embark on a mission of her own – a solo mission to prove them wrong, to prove that she was still a ninja, still a friend, and still worthy of their trust.
