Chapter 11
Grains of time as small as sand slipped between my fingertips when I spent time with him. Hours felt like minutes, and it felt all too short when a notification sounded off on my phone. Eyebrows narrowing themselves, I tore my gaze away from Jack, so I could reach and grab my phone. Pulling it towards my face, I scowled as I glared at a reminder.
'2 hours until work'
Jack seeming to notice bent down close to me, trying to read the notification. Angling the phone a certain way so Jack would be able to see, he shot me a sheepish smile before continuing to read. Processing what the notification was saying after a second, he looked at me with a sad grin.
"So, rain check?"
"Yeah, I'm really sorry I totally forgot I had work."
"No! God no it's okay! I'm grateful you even came at all." A light tint of blush spread across my face as I tried to keep my knees from buckling slightly, his face slightly changed colours as well.
"I'm only doing what's right."
"Well I thank you for that." Jack leaning back onto his pillow, he gazed up at the ceiling smiling comfortably in my presence. A smirk growing on my face, I stood up and began making my way out, feet tapping across the tiles.
"I'll be back before you know it." My heart started to grow heavy as I felt myself shuffle closer to the door, trying to keep the sincere grin on my face, he turned to stare at me wearing the expression I was feeling.
"I'll be waiting." His expression sinking slightly, my stomach twisted and I spat something out instinctively trying to make him feel better.
"I'm counting on it." Jack slowly spreading a smile once again, I let my shoulders drop as I exit the room. Hand rising and clutching onto my shirt, I searched for my heart beat with my fingertips, realizing it felt like it was going a thousand miles per hour.
Why am I so nervous for work?...... Is it work?
Pushing the thoughts hurriedly out of my mind, I jogged out of the hospital, not before getting called out for running in the halls and jumped into my car, turning the key and driving back home.
I hate work so much.
----=== + ===---
Slugging back into my house, I glared outside the window at the pitch black night. Why did it have to be so cold? Eyes weighing tons I shuffled myself towards the kitchen, grabbing a fruit from the bowl I left on the counter and sauntered towards my room. A groan emitting from my lips, I shoved myself down onto the bed and rolled over, so I was facing the ceiling.
Feeling my eyes begin to sink, they shot open immediately when I heard my phone go off. Sitting up in a somewhat comfortable position, much preferring to be sleeping, I reached over lazily for my phone, grabbing it and bringing it back towards me.
My finger sleepily pressing the power button to turn it on, I let my eyes graze the screen, reading every few words that seemed semi important, but catching attention to a message that was from Jack.
'Hey money maker, how was work?'
A grin slipping onto my face, I quickly unlocked my phone and slid into messenger.
'Boring as usual. How was the hospital?'
'Always boring. ALWAYS. There are no exceptions to how boring the hospital is.' Chuckling quickly, I raised an eyebrow instinctively. I hope they aren't all boring times. Feeling my stomach churning uneasily, I shot the question.
'Even when I'm around?'
'Those are the only good times.'
"I'd hope so!'
'Don't worry, they are. What are you doing right now?'
'I'm flopped on my bed. I'm tired.'
'Awww, poor baby ;-;' A snort shooting out from my mouth, I slapped a hand over my mouth giggling.
'Dude fuck off.'
'Sorry >W<'
'I'm gonna barf.' Grin beaming widely, I watched as the 'delivered' word turned into 'read' and felt butterflies flap inside my chest as I watched the three dots bounce on the screen as he typed. Leaning forward towards the phone, my heart sank immediately when I saw the dots disappear.
Hand reaching up and scratching the back of my neck, I let out a sigh as I turned my phone off waiting for an answer. Impatience bubbling inside of me violently, I jumped to hear the notification sound after a few minutes.
'Sorry about that Mark, doctors came in told me they need to do another check-up, so I'll text later okay?'
'But it's almost twelve in the morning? They're doing a check-up now?'
'Better safe than sorry, right? I'll see you soon Mark.'
'Alright talk to you later.'
A sigh blowing out of my mouth, I rest my head on the back of my pillow and felt my eyes flutter shut.
Maybe I can make time to visit him tomorrow too?
