A Year Difference
It's graduation day. This is it. High school is officially over. Yet, I can't feel happy at a time like this. Graduating means leaving my teammates behind. More specifically, leaving Kenma behind. I'm currently at a graduation party in the main gymnasium at school. Kenma already went home for the day, along with all the other second and first years. But I don't want to leave him. I wish I could stay in high school forever, just so I can be with m̶y̶ Kenma a little longer.
"Hey, Yaku!" I shout over the noise of the party. "I'm going to go see Kenma. Tell the teachers I left, I don't have time to track them down and tell them myself."
"Kay! Have fun, Kuroo!" Yaku says.
"Thanks!" I shout as I walk out the door.
I grab my backpack and hop onto my bike. Kenma's house is just under a mile away from school. I bike as fast as I can. As I turn onto his street, I see him on his front porch. That wouldn't be unusual if it was a different person, but this is Kenma we're talking about. He avoids outdoors as much as possible. Something else is weird, too. He's just standing there facing the door. Is someone talking to him from inside or something? I leave my bike on the side of the street and run up to his porch.
"Hey! Kenma!"
He turns around. The expression on his face... I've never seen it before. It looks like... surprise? But this is Kenma we're talking about, remember. He doesn't use expressions.
"Kuroo..." he says. Then I see a hand reach out from the door. I start running towards him as it slaps him across the face.
"Worthless brat," the voice says. It sounds like... his mom? What's going on?
I rush to his side. His mom's standing in the doorway, and she doesn't look happy. Completely different from how she usually is.
"Hey, Kenma... remember, we have extra volleyball practice today?" It's the first lie I could think of. I need to get him away from her so he can explain what's going on.
Kenma nods, understanding the lie. "Yeah. We should get going, or we'll be late."
"Kenma! GET BACK HERE!" His mom shouts after us, but doesn't make an effort to follow us.
Kenma hops on his bike. I ride next to him all the way to my house. We head straight to my room. We both sit down on my bed.
"Kenma." I say, grabbing his hands. "What's going on?"
Kenma looks surprised for a moment, and then pulls his hands away. "I-it's nothing,"
"No. It's not nothing. Kenma, why'd she hit you? Why were you outside?"
"Is it really so weird that I was outside?" Kenma says, coldly. His glare feels like it's turning me to ice. I've never seen him like this.
"No... I'm sorry. Of course it's not weird. Kenma, please tell me what's going on."
He looks away. For a second, I think it's because he's embarrassed or something, but then I realize he's... crying? I wrap my arms around him, pulling him into a hug.
"K-Kuroo..." he says, and then he starts sobbing. I hug him tighter.
"It's okay, Kenma. Your going to be okay."
We stay in that position until he stops crying. I gently move away so that I can look him in the eyes.
"Now. Can you please tell me what's wrong? I want to help, I hate seeing you like this."
Kenma give a small nod. "M-my mom..." he starts. Another tear falls, leaving a trail down his cheek.
I gently brush it away, and then notice a light blush on his face. It's probably just because he's embarrassed from crying or something.
"S-she... w-well... you know my dad died. She says I remind her too much of him... a-and... she wants me to move out..." Kenma says. He starts sobbing. I've never seen him cry like this before.
I give him another hug. "It'll be okay, Kenma. But... do you want to stay with her?"
He shakes his head. "No. She's always s-so... m-mean..." he starts crying even harder.
I stroke his head. "Shhh. I've got an idea. We have a spare room, why don't you stay there?"
Kenma thinks about it for a second. "I... I don't want to be a bother..."
"You could never be a bother to me, Kenma." I say.
He pulls away from the hug for a second to look up at me. "R-really? You mean it?"
I smile warmly. "Yes. Of course."
He buries his head into my chest. "Kuroo... thank you so much..."
Omg, how is he so cute...
"Your welcome, Kenma Kitten."
He looks up at me with a confused look on his face. His eyes and nose are red from crying, but for some reason his cheeks are light pink. Is he blushing?
"Kenma... kitten?" He asks.
I smile. "Yep. I've decided it's your new nickname."
"Oh... okay."
I frown. "Is that okay? Do you not like it?"
"N-no, it's fine. I... I like it a lot, actually..." he says, looking away. His ears are red too now... so he is blushing!
"Ah, don't be embarrassed, Kenma Kitten." I tease.
"I'm not embarrassed," he says.
I tilt his head so he's looking me in the eyes.
"K-Kuroo?" He says. He's definitely blushing now.
"Kenma Kitten... there's something I need to tell you,"
"Y-yes?"
I lean forward and touch my forehead against his. "I love you," my voice is so low, it's barely a whisper.
"I-I..." he stammers.
I pull back. Maybe I shouldn't have told him?
"K-Kuroo..."
"Yes?" I ask, nervously.
He leans forward, giving me a small kiss on the cheek. I feel my face get warm.
"I... I love you too, Kuroo." He says, looking to the side again.
I smile. "Kenma Kitten, I have an idea. How about you be my boyfriend?"
He looks at me, then blushes and looks away. "S-sure..."
"Yay! Hold on, I'm gonna tell Bokuto and everyone right now!" I say.
"W-Wait! You don't have to do that!"
I smirk, pull out my phone, and open the group chat between the Nekoma team and the Fukurodani team.
Hi guys! Guess what?
Bokuto: Oya?
Akaashi: What is it now?
Yaku: What?
Lev: What?
Yaku: Lev, don't copy me!
Lev: Sorry!
I have a boyfriend now!
Bokuto: Is it Kenma?
Akaashi: It must be Kenma
Yaku: I bet ¥50 it's Kenma
Lev: Same!
Yaku: Lev, I said DONT COPY ME!!!
Lev: Sorry! Sorry!
How'd you guys know?!
Yaku: It's pretty obvious, Kuroo
Bokuto: Oya, I always knew you two would get married some day!
We're not married! We're just dating!
Bokuto: If you say so
Lev: I'll start planning the wedding!
Yaku, make Lev do 100 receives. Right now.
Yaku: Okay! Come on, Lev! Meet me at the gym in five minutes!
Lev: Noooooooo
Yaku: Yesssssssssssssss
Those two continue arguing. I turn my phone off and watch Kenma's reaction as he reads the group chat. He rolls his eyes.
"Kuroo, why..."
"Because! I want everyone to know that your mine."
He blushes and buries his face in his arms. "Kuroo, your so embarrassing..."
"Thank you, Kenma Kitten!"
He looks up. His eyes look kind of sad. Like he might cry or something.
"Kuroo..."
"Yes?"
"You won't be in the same school as me anymore next year..."
No.
I know it's true, but...
Can we forget about that for now?
That's what I want to say.
"I know."
"But... you'll still watch my games, right? I decided to continue volleyball until I graduate, so I'll still be playing..."
"Of course! That reminds me. Kenma Kitten, I have a very important question to ask you."
"Yes?"
"Will you be the captain of the Nekoma Volleyball Team?"
His eyes light up for a second. "I don't know... that sounds like a lot of work..."
"Come on, for me? It'll be fun, I promise."
He looks away for a second, thinking. Then he looks back at me. "Yeah. I'll do it."
I smile. "Awesome! And I promise, I'll come watch all of your games!"
He gives me a small smile. "Thanks, Kuroo."
6 months later:
This is it. If they win this, they'll have a guaranteed spot in the nationals.
(A/N I don't really know what part of the year they have their volleyball games, or how long their summer break is, so I'm sorry if the timeline doesn't really match up!)
They're having their team huddle right now. That's when I hear it. Words I thought I'd never hear again.
"We're like the blood in our veins. We must flow without stopping. Keep the oxygen flowing and your mind working. Let's do this," The captain of the Nekoma volleyball team said.

Was that too abrupt of an ending?
Oh well. I'm not that good at writing Kuroken, so I'm sorry if this one shot was really bad! This was the first Kuroken one shot I've ever written, so it was certainly a challenge! I really hope you guys enjoyed it, though!
I hope you all have a great day/night!
