Chapter Three
Deku walked through the field with heavy buckets of water in his hands and sweat dripping down his forehead. Kei ran between the man legs and barked at him, so the green-haired man muttered under his breath,"Get out the way mutt." The small dog with curly fur looked up at the man and wagged its tongue as it smiled. Deku huffed and shook his head at the dog before looking to the woman ahead of him on her knees in the dirt."I've got places to be you know !"
Ochaco turned to the man and teased,"You sure do complain a lot."
"Complain ? Complaining would be me crying about the heat or this damn dog that won't leave me alone."
Uraraka rolled her eyes and reached out a hand to pet Kei's small head."I just don't get what your issue is ?"
"My issue ?"
"Yeah, you helped me out the other day and I thanked you, but you couldn't even look at me. And then you go and stay on my property without my permission, and then play victim when I make you earn that night."
"Some people have things to do, and they can't just play with dogs and pick tomatoes all day."
Ochaco stood up and marched towards the man. She stood up on her tippy toes and jabbed her finger into the man's chest."And what exactly do you have to do Deku, let me know ! You carry yourself up high, but what the hell are you! A freeloader? Someone that thinks they're so much better then they really are? Or let me guess, someone who had a rich Daddy and was given everything on a silver platter and never earned a damn thing in their life ?"
Deku looked at Uraraka with his green eyes and scoffed at her."You think this is a hard life, huh ? Have you ever watched someone you love die in your arms, or been to slow to save a life ?" Ochaco looked at him and the annoyance in her eyes began to slowly wither away."I didn't think so."
.....
Hours had passed since the butting of heads and the sun was beginning to set. Deku kicked the rocks below his feet and began to feel thankful that his time in the small town was finally coming to an end, but he couldn't just leave without saying goodbye to Ochaco, although he couldn't stand her most of the time.
The man opened the door to the small home and slowly stepped in. As he walked in the same dog from earlier rushed at him, but unlike last time Deku only looked at the dog. The man's green eyes shot from the animal and to the cozy house. The place was not very big, but modest, which isn't a bad thing. There were very few decorations, but photos were everywhere. The memories seemed to be of Ochaco and her family, people she had not mention before. Deku walked with his head low into the kitchen where Ochaco stood cooking and said,"I'm about to go."
Uraraka turned around and looked at him with her big brown jewels."Would like to stay for dinner; traveling on an empty stomach is never the best idea." Ochaco's voice had lost its venom from earlier and mellowed out.
The man let out a breath of air through his nostrils and wiggled his lips."I-I don't think that's the best idea."
"Why not ?"
"M-Me and you aren't exactly on good terms so I should just get going, and avoid anymore...."
"Arguments," quietly whispered Ochaco.
"Yeah those."
"I wouldn't be able to sleep knowin' I let you go out in the middle of the dark hungry."
Deku leaned against the door frame with his head resting in his hand because he knew the woman wasn't going to let him have his way.
.....
Deku stared at Ochaco as she ate, but each time she would look up at him his focus would shift to the plate below him. Ochaco finished chewing her rice and asked,"You're not from around here are you ?"
"No."
The man's voice was devoid of emotion and it made Ochaco frown."I-I want to say I'm sorry."
The man across from her curiously raised his eyebrows,"For what ?"
"What I said earlier, it wasn't very nice, especially since... I don't know much about you."
Deku took a bite of his chicken and said,"You don't owe me or anyone else an apology."
"Huh ?"
"There is nothing wrong with having an edge to you, especially during times like this."
"Well before you go Deku I want you to know the real me, not the snappy one that plucks weeds." Uraraka then took a sip of her drink."I can be kinda...cautious with people is all, because of what happened to my parents." Deku looked at her curiously."T-They passed a few years ago, when the higher ups came into the town."
"Higher ups ?"
"The government," explained Ochaco.
"Oh !"
"Anyways, they were spotted using their quirks and people didn't take too kindly to that."
"So they were killed," muttered Deku.
"Yeah." Ochaco then wiped a tear from her eye and cleared her throat.
"Did they love you ?"
"Mo-More than anythin' in the world."
"That is all that matters, I never even knew my mother. She passed during childbirth."
"What about your Daddy ?"
Deku closed his eyes as he answered,"He kicked me out, and I haven't spoken to him in years."
Ochaco frowned,"Did you do somethin' bad ?"
"I didn't think so, but he had his own opinion."
"Ya know, I don't think someone should ever kick out their son."
"Well it wasn't you that made the decision. Me and him had a...unique relationship and he wanted me to be everything I wasn't." Deku then grimly chuckled,"But his lesson is starting to work so I guess he was right."
"Whenever I feel down I think about a story my Daddy use to tell me."
"That's kinda childish isn't it."
Ochaco smiled,"Maybe a little, but it helps me remember who I am and how I want to live my life."
"So it works."
"Every time. Have you heard the story of the Forgotten Gods before ?"
Deku ears perked up the words Forgotten Gods."That story is bullshit."
"What ?"
"It isn't what really happened."
"And how would you know ?"
"I just do."
"Then would like to tell me the truth Deku ?"
"I'm not sure you want to hear the truth."
"Why's that ?"
"It's not the safe fluffy crap your Dad told you."
"Tell me...please."
Deku bit the inside of his cheek and placed his hands on his lap."Let me guess he told you that they fought to protect Earth ?"
"Yea, they were true heroes."
Deku laughed,"That couldn't be farther from the truth. They were a squad of the most powerful Gods in the heavens and they had one job, keep the underworld at their mercy. The kind didn't give a damn about human kind, and regretted gifting them quirks, that was his worst mistake in his eyes."
"W-Why would he h-hate humanity ?"
"Because...they kept his son from taking the throne. The king saw how powerful his son was, but he knew the man wasn't ready to take his place."
Ochaco scratched the side of her head."That isn't too different."
"That's because he didn't tell you the ending did he ?"
"He always said it was unknown."
"So he told you about the man's curse ?"
"C-Curse ?"
"The man wasn't just banished from the heavens, he was also damned to something no-one should ever have to endure. The king cursed him into an infinite loop of watching the love of his life die for the rest of eternity."
"T-That's so sad," frowned Ochaco.
Deku stood up and cleared his throat."Yeah it is, but it's just a legend don't let it get to you. Plus, I like yours a lot more." The green-haired man turned to walk out of the kitchen, but Ochaco jumped from her seat and grabbed the man's arm.
"D-Deku, do you want to stay the night...in my home on the couch. It's really late and would probably be better if you waited til mornin'."
The man looked at her and grinned,"Are you going to make me work this off."
"No, this one is for free, no workin' it off."
Deku looked at the door and then at the woman holding on to him."I'll stay, but only because I haven't slept on something comfortable in years."
