Chapter Thirteen
Deku had fallen behind Ochaco after hours of marching through the thick forest . The man's side continued to ache and he desperately needed to rewrap his body. He watched the girl ahead of him closely as she took an abrupt stop. Deku glanced at her curious and broke into a jog to catch up to Uraraka.
Ochaco stood at an opening in the forest and looked at the beautiful sight ahead of her. The land before her was flat and a beautiful green. The grass was short and seemed to have been recently cut. She tried to shield her eyes from the bright sun as she looked up. The fiery star was still going strong and the clear sky did not do much to weaken its heat. She looked back down at the alluring scenery and spotted a marble temple. The roof of the temple was held up by many tall, strong columns. As she fawned over the erection she noticed a large lake behind the building. The sun reflected in the water and small ripples were visible in the crystal like liquid. Ochaco could not help herself and gasped,"Wow."
Deku came to a stop next to her and looked at the same scene."I didn't no those things still existed."
"The temple ? I didn't even know they were a thing !"
"There use to be a lot more of them thousands of years ago, but as the belief in mythology began to dwindle so did their needs, and the people that owned them thought that turning them into tourist attractions was the best thing to do with them."
The duo stepped out of the forest and began to walk along the soft field."What did people use them for ?"
"Prayers mostly, it was where people would come if they were a tough spot. They believed that these were the only places where the Gods heed their prayers, hence why people built them so long ago. It was a sanctuary for them, kinda like a safe space."
"That's so cool, I've never seen anything so pretty."
"I wouldn't get your hopes up. Most of these places haven't aged well on the inside and you'd be lucky if two statues are still in tact."
.....
Ochaco walked up the large set of marble stairs to the temple, but Deku stopped as he stepped on the first. When his foot connected with the rock he felt a rush through his body."Deku are ya comin' in ?"
"Y-Yeah, I-I just zoned out for a second."
"Dummy."
He walked up the stairs and stood next to Ochaco. The building did not have a door, but instead a large opening that a hordes of people could walk through. The pair walked into the temple and Ochaco let out a gasp. Both her and Deku looked at the persevered insides of the temple. In the middle of the spotless marble floor stood a ginormous statue of a man holding earth on his back. His face looked at the floor and an untamable mess of hair sat atop his head. Uraraka looked up and marveled at the painting above on the ceiling. The image depicted five men battling an army of demons and leading the daemons was a large man. His face was not visible, but the armor he wore alone made him terrifying."It's in good shape Deku !", gushed Ochaco.
"It is."
Ochaco ran from the entrance and to one a wall. She jumped in the air in excitement and looked at the ginormous statue of a bearded man. The man towered over at least four feet over her and she looked at each detail closely. The wrinkled robe that the man wore and opened up around his chest. The statue's defined muscles and the detailed veins carved into it. "That was the king."
Ochaco pointed to the statue."This guy ?"
"Yeah, he was the big dog, the leader of everything. Nothing happened in the heavens without his permission and if it did, he would never take kindly to it. He was known for at times being a compassionate leader, but that was bullshit. He ruled with an iron thumb and you never wanted to get on his bad side."
Ochaco took a few steps to the right and looked at the carving in front of her. This statue was shorter than the last by a foot, but still was a giant compared to her and Deku. This God's hair was unbelievably spiky and his eyes scared Ochaco. His face was carver with a snarl and he one of his hands while holding an helmet in he other. This man wore heavy set of armor on his body unlike the airy robe of the last one."What about this guy ?"
"That's Katsuki, the God of rage. He was the most talented God of any and his combat prose was unmatched. He was a natural fighter with a real fire in his belly, and famous his ego and powerful explosions."
"He sounds scary."
"He was."'
Ochaco and Deku moved onto the the next sculpture. This one was a few inches taller than Katsuki and stood with proper posture. Ochaco giggled as she looked at the man's serious face and hand saluting. He held a helmet his other hand and like Katsuki he wore armor, but his was much lighter."That's Tenya."
"Tenya ? That doesn't sound very God like."
"You shouldn't always judge a book by its cover. He was the most qualified to lead his squadron, but took a back seat out of respect to the commander. Tenya was very meticulous and wanted this to be done the right way, he was a by the rule book type of guy. He was known for his blazing speed that most people envied."
"He's the lamest one yet."
Deku chuckled,"So we're ranking the Gods ?"
"Yep, I'm gonna pick my favorite when it's over with."
"Who's leading right now ?"
"Katsuki, the mean lookin' one. He gives me a vibe that he could bake a really good souffle."
Deku and Ochaco continued to travel down the wall and stopped at the next statue. She looked at the man and felt a chill travel down her spine. His hair was short and parted across his forehead and a scar rested on his left eye. The man wore a heavy set of armor, but the set was oddly split down the middle."That's Shoto, he was the strangest off all the strongest Gods."
"The strangest, like he didn't butter his toast ?"
"He was a bit off an outcast and struggled with emotions. He didn't understand how people felt and often kept to himself, but what he lacked in social skills he made up for with his talent. He was the definition of a prodigy and would give anybody a good fight. The ability to wield fire and ice can be very troublesome for anyone that comes up against it."
Ochaco nodded her head in understanding and walked with Deku to the final two statues. At the end stood two shorter men who appeared to be the same person. They both had fluffy hair and a handsome face, but there were two noticeable differences. The first wore a cocky smile, while the other grimaced, and the first statue was illuminated by a bright light while the other stood in darkness."What are these guys' names ?"
"No-one knows what they were called."
"Then why'd they make statues for them ?"
"Because of their story." Ochaco turned and looked at the man behind her as he recounted their tale." They were the two son's of the first man you saw, the king of the Heavens. The king fell in love with a mortal woman and she bore the man's twins."
"They are demi-Gods then right ?"
Deku closed his eyes and nodded. He took a breath before continuing."At first they were never told about their origin, but their father could not ignore their actions. After the brothers lost their mother to a plague their father hoisted them into the paradise above. Initially they were looked down upon by the full-blooded Gods, but with time they earned their place. They battled side by side and always looked out for the other, but one grew envious."
"The one at the end ?"
"Yes. His brother was granted control of a squadron, and this angered him. He always thought they were equals, but the decision stirred something in his brain. He let his jealousy take over and he leaked the truth about his brother to their father."
Everything clicked in Ochaco's brain."His brother loved a mortal woman."
"I guess you're a little smarter than I give you credit for."
Ochaco walked to the firsts statue and pressed her hand against its chest. Deku breathing hitched when she made contact with the piece of art."All of these people are from The Forgotten Gods aren't they ?"
"That man was the leader of a team that protected Earth from Demons, but he was not entirely devoted to his job. After learning the truth the king kept a close eye on him to see if what his son said was a fact. The man watched in disappointment as his son visited the woman he loved from his home village."
"D-Did he know he was bein' watched ?"
"He knew, but he valued her more than his position, and he paid for it." Ochaco looked at the statue and tried to say something, but she could not conjure up anything, she was speechless.
.....
The sun had set and night had fallen over the beautiful land that the pair had found. Fireflies buzzed outside and crickets chirped as Ochaco snored inside of the temple. Drool leaked form the woman's mouth as she slept and Deku looked down at her and grinned. The man stopped gazing at her with his emerald eyes and looked up at the statue of himself. He walked up the shrine and let out a sigh."Why the hell am I doing this ?" The man then placed a three fingertips across the forehead of the statue and a bright green light began to emit from his fingers. Deku's eyes then glowed and everything went dark for a moment. Seconds later he regained control over himself and opened his eyes.
Deku stood up and looked around in disbelief. The place that he called home years ago was in shambles and set a flame. The golden road beneath his feet was now in crumbs and the buildings that many called home long ago was shattered. The marble was in pieces and laid across the street. Deku's heart stopped and he began to walk down the path. He stopped once he reached a long set of stairs. The once white steps were now stained with blood and thousands of bodies laid lifelessly on them. He continued to walk up the stairs and stopped when he reached a grand golden palace. The large golden doors that no-one could penetrate were now broken open and laid on the floor. Deku took a fearful gulp and stepped inside of the place he once called home. He walked along the five inch thick door and looked up. He fell to his knees and roared as he clinched his fist. He looked at the many dead demons laying in the building, but that's not what he focused on. Instead, he was looking at the three dead men hanging from a wall with blood leaking from their mouths and spears piercing their chest. Deku turned his head slightly and looked at the large throne where his father sat, but it was not with pride. Now the man's eyes were missing their color, and too many weapons to count were jammed into his body and pinning him to his throne. Deku's connection broke and he was sent back to his body. He fell onto the floor and landed on his butt. The man gritted his teeth and looked up of the painting above, trying to depict the bouts he once had in the underworld. Deku wanted to scream but he could not, that would wake Ochaco. Instead he walked with a purpose, vengeance, for the first time in years he wanted to bloody his hands.
