Chapter 21
"He did what?" Elsa said, her eyes wide and her face the very image of pure shock.
"That makes it even with that chick, one to one," added my grandma, who had joined us via FaceTime. "He's with her, but he kissed you."
"On the cheek," I clarified again, to which she just waved dismissively.
Originally, it was supposed to be Elsa and me hanging out today, but then my grandma messaged me to ask if I had time and Elsa said she didn't mind her joining. She even said she wanted to meet her, so now the three of us were sitting together, talking about what had happened two days ago at Thanksgiving.
"Cheek or not, his lips touched your body," Elsa said. "That's what matters. He likes you, more than Stacy, I'm telling you."
"If he liked me more, he wouldn't be with her," I insisted.
She shrugged. "I never said he wasn't an idiot."
My grandma laughed. "I like you."
Elsa smiled at her. "I like you too."
"Should I leave you two alone?" I said sarcastically, which made us all laugh.
"Seriously though, Astrid," Elsa said. "Hiccup likes you. Anyone with eyes can see that. He's just got this stupid connection with Stacy."
"How did that even happen?" my grandma asked, popping a whole cookie into her mouth.
"Stacy is the cheerleader captain and my boyfriend, Jack, who's Hiccup's best friend, is one of the football players," Elsa explained. "Hiccup and Jack have been friends for a while, but he never went to watch practice. After Jack and I got together, we went there more often so I could watch and Hiccup came along to kill time. That's where he ran into Stacy, but they didn't start talking until one of the games. He left me sitting alone on the bench to go flirt with her." She rolled her eyes at that and I had to smirk. "Eventually, they went on a date and after that, they were a couple. Yay." I had never heard someone say Yay with so much disdain.
"Ah," my grandma said. "So nothing special, I figured."
"Does it have to be something special?" I asked.
"The best love stories are special. That's why yours is better. Think about it, you two were forced to work together. At first you hated each other, then you fell in love. From strangers to friends and soon he'll be naked in your bed." Elsa burst out laughing while I could only stare at my grandma in shock. This woman was unbelievable. "Don't look at me like that, you told us on Thursday you imagined it after all."
"I thought about it for a second, that's different," I defended myself, my face burning.
"No, it's not, sweetheart," she said with a grin. "We all know you want to ride him."
Elsa started laughing again, while I pinched the bridge of my nose. Funny thing was, I had said something similar to him before. Maybe I did want it, so what? I wanted to push him up against a wall and leave hickeys on his neck, too. Sex was definitely the next step.
"Oh, Granny," Elsa said, calming down from her laughter. "You're amazing."
"Thank you," my grandma replied, taking another bite of a cookie.
"I think we talk about me way too often," I added.
"Your life is the most entertaining," my grandma said with a grin. "You have to keep us entertained."
I rolled my eyes. Sure, a lot had happened since tutoring started, but it wasn't that cinematic.
"Elsa," I said, shifting the focus. "What about you? Anything going on? How's it going with Jack?"
She gave me a knowing smile. "Everything's great, same as always. Things with Jack are as good as on day one. No changes, no fading feelings or something. Pretty boring, actually."
My grandma chuckled softly as she picked up another cookie. "Told you, your life is more interesting."
There wasn't much else to talk about after that. My grandparents had discovered a new sci-fi series, Lost in Space, and had bought some new puzzles. They had finally bought the Lego Death Star and were building it together. I told them about the day I went to my mom's grave, though I left out the part about Stacy. Both of them thought it was sweet that Hiccup had taken care of me, calling it yet another item on the long list of reasons why it's obvious he likes me more than just a friend. Not long after that, we said goodbye to my grandma. Elsa and I headed down to the kitchen to make sandwiches.
"Isn't today supposed to be tutoring day?" Elsa asked, popping a cucumber slice into her mouth.
"Yes, but we canceled because it's technically break and it's not urgent enough that we had to meet today," I replied, spreading remoulade on my toast. "Besides, I had to tell you about Thursday or I would've lost my mind."
She laughed. "Totally understandable."
We sat down on the couch with our sandwiches and started an episode of Friends, though we barely paid attention as we kept chatting. She told me about a few dates with Jack and how thoughtful he always was. Their first date was a homemade dinner on his terrace. He'd put up candles, hung fairy lights, and covered the floor with rose petals. She got teary-eyed just remembering it.
"I'm not really a crybaby," she said, wiping at her eyes. "But that was just so beautiful."
"I can imagine," I said, a smile on my face. They really were cute together.
"You should've seen us at our first party together," she said, already laughing. "We played spin the bottle and had to drink so much. We were totally wasted afterward. We laughed and stumbled home to my place in the middle of the night."
I laughed with her. "I never had that kind of thing with Brandon, even though things were better in the beginning. I never really trusted him completely."
"Probably for the best." She took a sip of her water. "Speaking of parties, Mitchell's throwing his Christmas party in two weeks. You're coming."
"I don't know," I began, but she didn't let me object.
"Oh yes, you are. That wasn't a question, it was a fact. Getting out will do you good, and last time, Hiccup didn't leave your side. Might happen again." She winked and took another sip.
I sighed. "I don't even know if I have anything to wear."
She gave me a mischievous grin. "Leave that to me, I already have an outfit in mind."
I had a feeling that night wasn't going to end well, especially considering the clothes she'd probably force me to wear. Still, I eventually agreed. It was just another party, what could possibly go wrong?
