A Spark: Part 17

Jesse remembered clearly, the note on her empty bed, sheets torn and wrinkled from her outburst. She remembered the stabbing pain in her heart, the tears, the hole in her soul. Like a piece had been taken out, crumpled, and unable to fit back in place.

Everything was perfect, more than enough for Jesse. The daily visits to Reuben's memorial, the treasure room, adventures with her friends. She had her life, her happiness. She had her friends, family, and her one and only. So why?

The question hung in the air like clouds full of rain.

The sun was shining bright through her window, but only as a disguise to cover up the gray clouds from the storm rolling in.

"Lukas?" Jesse asked, wrapping her arms around him from behind. She could feel something was wrong the moment she hugged him.

He stiffened, and then relaxed, touching her hands gently. She could feel his heart beating, fast. Way faster than usual.

"Hey Jesse," He said, smiling. But she could tell he was faking it. She frowned.

"What's wrong?" She asked, moving so that she was in front of him. Then she took hold of his hands gently. He wouldn't look at her.

"Nothing, nothing's wrong." The blonde replied, the words forced out of his mouth. She raised an eyebrow.

"Lukas, I can tell when you're lying. What's wrong?"

He sighed, and then looked at her, green eyes staring intently into his blue.

"There's...there's something I have to do..." He replied, hesitantly. And then seeing worry in her eyes he bent down and kissed her forehead. "Don't worry. It'll be alright. I promise."

Lies. Why did she believe them? Maybe it was because she wanted it to stay like this, happy, filled with joy. Maybe it was because she trusted him.

"I'll be back." He said, dressed and ready to go. The moon was shining brightly in the open sky.

"Where are you going?" Jesse asked, sitting in the bed. "It's late, we should get some rest. You especially."

"It's about that...secret thing I have to do." Lukas replied, getting his sword and pocketing it in inventory. She got up from bed and folded her arms across her chest.

"I still don't understand why you can't tell me what it is. Or even take me with you.."

He walked up to her and gave her a small smile.

"It wouldn't be a secret if I told you, now would it?"

She bit her lip and then grabbed his hand.

"Whatever you're doing, can it wait until tomorrow? You need some sleep, and I want you to stay with me."

Jesse looked at him with pleading eyes until he gave an annoying but playful sigh. He ruffled her hair.

"Alright."

They lay in bed, side by side, two minds, two hearts. She turned to face him, already sensing the adrenaline pulsing through his veins. He pushed a strand of hair behind her ear.

"Jesse?"

"Yeah?"

"You know I would never do anything to hurt you, right?"

"..."

"Of course."

"And if I did, you know it'd be for a good reason."

"..."

"It depends on the reason. Why are you asking this anyway?"

"Cause I love you."

"That's not the real reason."

"You're right. But I do love you, you know."

"I love you too blondie."

"Goodnight Jesse."

"Goodnight Lukas. See you tomorrow."

Little did she know, she wouldn't. She wouldn't see him, only an empty bed with a note of his betrayal.

Pretty lies are much better to hear than ugly truths.
