Chapter 41 | Call

After getting the very enthusiastic all clear from mom, we returned to Mirae's room and she gingerly picked up my phone. She gave me a look that said, 'Are you sure?' and I nodded encouragingly.

"The passcode is 5884," I told her. She looked up at me, seemingly shocked that I'd readily provided that information. "What do I have to hide?" I laughed. "It's not like I have a bunch of damning evidence on my phone. My only friend is you so the text history, at least, is pretty sparse. And they're really not that interesting...just pretty damn annoying." I winked at her and her cheeks turned pink as she turned away from me. The cuteness of it made me smile.

She pulled up a contact from her own phone and dialed the number on mine. To my surprise, she put it on speaker phone. The call was shortly answered by a confused voice.

"Hello?" they asked, somewhat apprehensively.

And at the sound of that voice, she completely fell apart. "Kookie?" she choked out.

"Mirae?!" he asked, obviously shaken. "What's going on? Are you okay?"

"No," she moaned.

"Where are you?! Are you still at the hospital? Did something happen? Did Yoon – " he seemed to be trying to be delicate while at the same time, desperate to figure out what was happening. He diverted his original question. "How's Yoongi?" he asked carefully.

"He's awake." She was sobbing at this point. I moved toward her.

"That's great!" he exclaimed. "I'm so glad!"

I couldn't help but feel at least a little bit of gratitude. Someone else, even if wasn't for my sake, was glad that I was alive.

"But Mirae, where are you calling from? Seokjin tried calling you a couple of hours ago after you didn't respond in the group chat. But he said he got a message that your number was out of service. And why are you crying?" He sounded like he was trying not to panic. "Mirae, what's going on?"

"Kookie," she sputtered. "I need you. I need all of you. Can you all come if I text you an address?"

"Yes," he replied, almost before she'd even finished her sentence. "Send me the address right now. But stay on the phone with me, okay?"

She hiccupped a sob, "Okay."

She handed me my phone and I quickly typed out a text message containing only my address to the number she was on the line with.

"I got it," he said about 20 seconds later. "I'm texting the other guys now. I'll also ask Taehyung if he can drive us. We'll all fit – "

"In the van," she finished, still sniffling.

"Yeah. Mirae, give me just a minute while I finish texting the guys. Still stay on the phone, though, okay?"

"Okay."

There was silence for about a minute and a half. Mirae eventually took a hesitant breath. "Kookie?"

"I'm still here," he reassured her. "We're making plans in order to get to you. Don't worry. We'll be there soon."

She looked up at me and I smiled reassuringly. "Kookie," she said again. "I'm at Yoongi's house. That's the address I sent you."

There was a long pause on the other end of the line. "What are you do – "

"Don't tell Tae and Joon, okay?" she said. "They might not come if they know." My stomach did a small flip of nervousness and shame.

"Mirae," he replied. "They'll walk to the ends of the earth for you. We all would. They'll come no matter where you are. Is Yoongi there?"

"Yes, this is his phone."

"What happened to...you know what, never mind, it doesn't matter. Are you okay?"

"Not really. But this has nothing to do with Yoongi. He and his family have been wonderful to me."

An audible sigh of relief came through the speaker. "I'm walking to Taehyung's house now," Jungkook said. "So are the others. Once we all get there, it looks like it'll just be about a 20 minute drive."

"Kookie," her voice sounded strained. "Please stay on the phone with me."

"I wouldn't dream of hanging up," he reassured her.

"Kookie," she said again, but her voice was cracking. "Mom..."

There was silence for a moment. Then, "What did she do, Mirae?"

She started sobbing. "She hates me, Kookie. I'll never see her again. She might as well be dead, just like dad."

"Mirae, is Yoongi there with you right now?"

"Yes," she choked out.

"Tell him to give you a hug," Jungkook said firmly.

I wasted no time, and pulled her into my arms. She clung to both my shirt and my phone.

"What am I going to do, Kookie?" she cried. "Am I an orphan now?"

I could hear other voices in the background of the call, but Jungkook was steadfast and didn't acknowledge them. "Mirae, no matter what happens, you have so many people around you that love you. You will never be without a family. Do you understand?"

She nodded, but when he didn't get a verbal confirmation, he repeated, "Do you understand?"

"Yes," she whispered as she lifted her head off of my chest.

"We're all here," Jungkook suddenly said. "We're on our way. Tell Yoongi that if I walk in there and you're not in his arms for a hug, I'll kick his ass."

Both she and I chuckled softly. "I'll let him know," she said, barely above a whisper.

It was quiet for a few moments, other than the occasional chatter in the background that we couldn't decipher. Eventually, Jungkook spoke again.

"Mirae?"

"Yeah?" she asked.

"I love you."

She sniffled. "I love you, too, Kookie."

"So, tell me about what happened with Yoongi," he said, obviously trying to distract her from the situation at hand. "When did he wake up?"

"Two days ago," she said. "I was the first one other than nurses and doctors to see him."

"Typical Mirae, always in the right place at the right time," he said with a smile in his voice. She smiled, too, and I was relieved.

"And he's home now? He's okay?"

"Yeah, he got released from the hospital today."

"Wow, just two days after waking up from a coma? That seems pretty incredible."

"He's strong," she said, looking up into my eyes. "And pretty damn resilient."

"Sounds like it," Jungkook replied kindly. "Hey Mirae, the others want to talk to you. Are you up for that right now?"

"Sure," she confirmed quietly.

"Haebaragi!" a new voice exclaimed. She grinned.

"Hi, Hobi!"

"You sound like you're smiling," he said, sounding pleased. "Keep that beautiful smile for when I get there! I won't accept anything less!"

She giggled. "I promise, Hobi."

"Hey!" a new voice said excitedly.

"Minie!" She almost burst into fresh tears.

"We're almost there, my love! Did you tell Yoongi I said hi like I told you to?"

She laughed. "I was going to, but then he was awake and I kinda forgot all about it."

"Rude!" he said, teasingly. "JK says he's there with you, though, so I'll just tell him myself since you can't be trusted to relay messages."

"Yah!" she scoffed. "Who's rude now?!" We both could hear laughter echoing through the phone.

"My dumpling! How are you?!"

Her eyes looked sad, but she still had a smile behind her voice. "I've been better, Jinnie."

"I need a hug when I get there, and no one gives hugs like you." Her eyes brightened significantly. "So I expect a good one, okay?"

She smiled. "Okay, I can't wait!"

"Rae Rae, I've been so worried!"

Her face lit up. "I miss you, Tae Tae."

"I've missed you, too. I'll be there soon, okay? I'm hurrying as fast as I can. I love you so much."

"I love you, too."

"Mirae."

She held back a sob and it turned into a hiccup. "Joonie."

"It's okay," he said calmly. "You're okay."

"Joonie," she simply repeated, fresh tears beginning to fall.

"I know, sweetheart. You'll be in my arms in less than 10 minutes, okay?"

"Okay," she whispered.

"I love you."

"I love you, too, Joonie."
