Someone who is trans is not comfortable with the gender assigned to them at birth.  Although usually used to describe trans male (born female but feels male) or trans female (born male but feels female), trans is an umbrella term to describe all people who don't feel that their assigned gender describes them.

For the purposes of this book, this chapter is focused on trans males and trans females.  Other identities have their own chapter.
