Chapter 3: Ghost

When Coral woke up from her nightmare, she reached for the paper and pen, and wrote it down. It scared her to even write about it, they had been getting worse. As usual her skin was scaly and her hands were webbed. She got up and dried herself off, but her scales would not transform back.

Frightened, she filled the bath with warm water and slowly lowered herself, watching hesitantly as she turned into a mermaid once again. She watched as her scales shimmered, and her legs fused together, forming her tail, but this time it was a pure white, and her fin formed, glowing as white as a ghost. "What the heck?" Coral murmured. "This isn't meant to happen..." she worried. Not wanting to wake the family up, she got out of the bath. Her tail disappeared, but her scales stood firm, refusing to reveal her smooth skin underneath.

"Coral?" Phoenix whispered into her room. "Are you awake? I heard you run a bath."
With no answer, Phoenix opened the door more, and walked in hesitantly, closing it as quietly as she could once she had entered the dimly-lit room.
Once her eyes adjusted, she saw the silhouette of Coral, leaning against the concrete railing of the bare balcony. Hidden underneath her pyjamas consisting of a vest and some shorts, Coral's scales shimmered, wanting to rip through the confines of Coral's clothes. Phoenix gasped at the bare beauty of them.
She heard Coral sniffle, and brought her a dressing gown, warmly asking "Nightmare, again?"
Coral nodded, and pointed to the writing pad "I wrote it down as soon as I woke up."
"Smart thinking Coral. Well done" she reassured.
Coral suddenly spun around, walking toward the bathroom with determination. As Phoenix realised where she was going, she sprinted to catch up with her daughter.
