Who says "Gates!" And who says "Language!"
Aka, the joke that started on Cross-Warrior 's discord and became a real tag under autumn_sunfire . Tagged by CelticWarriorQueen17 .
I try to limit the language in my books, but outside of their page time, which of my characters would curse? Let's find out.
Feyla: Very rarely curses because she is a Lady of Class and her mother would have had her head for using such words when she was growing up. Has canonically told Sedgewick to watch his language and would kick up a fuss if she ever caught her own kids saying anything. She slips up and says "Gates" occasionally when under high stress (probably because of Sedgewick's bad influence).
Fenroy: As a former soldier who grew up in one of the most rough-and-tumble areas of the kingdom, Fenroy knows all the bad words but he's too much of a sweetheart to use them. His guardsman friends tease him for it.
Eleyna: Learned all her language from a certain mage mentor of hers. She prefers to insult and intimidate people via scary stares rather than expletives. Will casually drop a four-letter word if she stubs her toe, much to her husband's amusement.
Sedgewick: Knows all the curses and has probably invented some new ones. Will use four-letter words as a descriptor. Will intersperse said words with people's names. Will go on long tirades that combine said words with other creative threats and insults. Basically, if I let him have his way, he would break the PG-13 language barrier. Tries to limit himself when in professional situations (Lord's Council, Ivory Tower presentations). Succeeds based on how annoying and/or stupid people have been. Also tries to rein it in around Feyla because she is a Lady who is Scary When Irked and she is more likely to dispense kisses when his mouth is clean.
Beryn: He's a lord and speaks like one. Very rarely curses but will drop a frustrated word when he's alone. Also secretly knows a litany of bawdy tavern songs that aren't appropriate for him to play at court.
Mydel: Didn't know half of what he knows now before he worked for Sedgewick. Does not curse and gets embarrassed at the thought. Profanity is ashamed to look upon his face.
Hobrin: Grew up in a crime syndicate and speaks like it. Will curse in front of a lady, ask for her pardon, and then curse again ten seconds later.
