A Kingdom Lost, A King Found
Princess Gayatri was nervously walking through the corridors of her massive palace. At the age of 30, she was unmarried, and planned on breaking another tradition of the family by joining the parliament. The Rajmata refused to talk to her ever since she had made her wishes known to her family.
Although they had lost significant power and titles after the Independence, her family somehow managed to keep their wealth. Her grandmother, however, refused to relinquish their past glory, and hence why Gayatri was still called a 'Princess'.
A sigh left her lips. That was when she saw a large man standing in front of her. This alarmed her, and she frantically looked around for her guards.
"Relax, Rajkumari, I won't hurt you." The man said in a gentle voice.
"Who are you?"
The man looked around, then turned to Gayatri and said, "This was my summer palace. I used to come here as a child with my brother. But my main palace is missing."
Gayatri didn't understand him. Instead, she asked him to leave. The man shrugged and sat down, clarifying that he had no intentions to do so.
"I won't harm you. I'm just looking for a way back to where I came from. What year is it?"
"2019?"
The man's eyes grew wide, and he let out a hearty laugh. It was then Gayatri noticed his clothes, which looked ancient.
"So much has changed. Where did the Mahishmati go? What happened to it?" He asked.
Very few in modern times had heard about Mahishmati, a kingdom lost in time. However, Gayatri knew, as her family descended directly from them. Since only her family held this knowledge, she was obliged to ask his name. When he answered, her eyes grew wide.
She stepped forward to touch him so she could ensure that he was real, and when she did, she felt a sudden jolt of electricity. Within moments, she could see his memories, and that of the lost kingdom. Never had she realized how glorious was her past, and how heroic were her ancestors. She shed tears due to the emotions that took over her.
"You are definitely my blood." The man said and smiled, and she nodded.
"You also share my passion for serving the people. Isn't it why your want join the governance of this kingdom?" He asked.
"We call it a 'country. No kings; the people chose their ruler." She said.
The man found it strange.
"How about you stay with me till you figure out how to return?" Gayatri said. For her, this was a golden opportunity to learn more about Mahishmati. The man let out a laugh and said, "I'll give you what you want. Now, let me tell you about the time when I met Devasena..."
