Chapter 9

Purpose

Note: I decided to switch to 1st person POV. The reason is that it is a lot easier to write the feelings of the characters featured and the plot will become more understandable (for me, at least). Shoutout to blastid for telling me ^_^

—————

Sometimes, it takes effort to impress the audience of your performance. Because there are various kinds of audience that have to witness your performance either on stage or from afar. The purpose of a presentation is to show others your capability and effort you put all your heart and soul in to the performance you are about to execute.

In my case; I am a performer and Ozu is the audience. [1]

Why is the progenitor excluded from the audience? It's because he is the judge. The one that will give remarks to your performance. Or my performance.

Despite the fact that master himself dotes on some demon like me was rather peculiar. I'm not dumb enough to realize that this demon called samurai demon named Ozu is preferably envious of the progenitor's decision to entitle me as what he called Demon Executioner. [2]

I have to admit that Ozu has the potential to be someone that stands as the right hand of the progenitor considering the amount of power and skills this demon possesses. Originally, a demon like him is infrequent and eccentric. I've never seen a modern (former) human having such skills that primal ancestors own.

Based on what I could comprehend, my duty is to take over the progenitor's position temporarily. I have no clue for whatever reason the progenitor has to do but it most likely relate to a cure that could prevent him from burning under the light of the sun. Demons come out at night because they cannot stand against the heat of the sun, just like vampires according to the tales of some books that I managed to read on the day.

That is common knowledge to all demons, including me. The purpose as to why I mentioned it right now is just to remind myself that I, myself is not excluded to that fact. I could die anytime of the day if I compel myself to expose to the sun.

Surely my performance is just average, for now. Due to only hardly any demons up to this time exists, the only thing I could do is to observe the demon I blessed. Right now, he was busy building his abilities as a special demon. But I could confirm that he has yet to reach that position yet. He lacked the requirements needed to be able to become one and be recognized by the judge.

I'm confident with the skills I possess before I became the being I am right now. I don't need any more unnecessary training or building abilities. Besides, I only do is to execute. I have this feeling that whenever I obliterate an imposter. The feeling of restraint. The feeling of insisting to kill the being that is identical to myself. It is presumable that my behaviour before I became a demon remained within me. I believe demons feel the same way, but it is yet proven.

Back to this demon, he remained incompetent and has yet to make his abilities. I guess there's no helping him for now. Or has he felt my presence from afar? I am currently standing on the tallest building in Tokyo, watching the demon I had created in an open area surrounded with trees from miles away.

No, demons like him doesn't have that ability yet. Only the demons, the progenitor exclusively made himself naturally have this ability. It is a new ability he made after reinforcing the samurai demon. It's a hassle to explain the details but it is useful to observe lower demons. Currently, I assure that only me and Ozu had the ability, yet. Unless, this self-proclaimed demon of mine can surpass that of an ordinary demon then I wouldn't be surprised that he'll eventually can feel my presence right now.

—————

Hey, demon. It's been 3 hours. When are you going to develop that ability of yours?

Seriously, this duty irritates me as well. Because it's my duty to observe the potential proficient demons for the future of the demons, I also have to guide them into reaching them as well. Initially, this duty is truly unusual to a normal demon because demons also fight themselves to survive and be recognized. The demons' natural tradition is like a battle royale. The survival of the fittest. Source: books.

It can't be helped, then. I have to show to this demon how an ability is made. Seriously, gaining an ability is natural to demons, why's this demon has to have one yet?!

Using my vanishing ability, I made my way towards the location of the sole demon who has still yet to get his ability.

—————

"Tairuku." [3]

Once I called upon the demon named Tairuku, he flinched in his place but didn't look at me.

I guess the presence of a right hand man of the progenitor is still overwhelming.

"Takashi-sama." [4]

"Have you realized the purpose of a condescending demon?"
Translation: "Have you comprehended my duty?"

What I'm using right now is necessary for a superior being like myself. It is a test that is being portrayed in a vague or unclear sentence but it has a certain meaning behind it. This way, I could determine if a demon is capable of being loyal to the progenitor.

"Yes, Takashi-sama."

It seems like Tairuku was able to comprehend the message behind that question. That response is enough to decide that he is indeed capable. However, this kind of test is necessary until the end of the conversation.

"Then what do you think the moon shines above?"
Translation: "What do you think why I'm here?"

"To provide guidance for the demons to excel and gain their abilities."

Sometimes, the statements don't correlate to the possible topic or the official meaning behind it. For a low ranked demon, it would be difficult for them to comprehend the meaning behind these statements. That's why, only potential demons that are selected are worthy to be tested by these kinds of conversations.

However, it is up to me to decide when to initiate it. So, I decided to execute this test right now of all times. I wasn't able to perform this kind of test back then. As expected, Tairuku was able to comprehend this kind of test despite the fact that I didn't introduced it to him.

The reason why he flinched every time we would meet is that there will be a possibility that I would initiate the test. It would also mean that he wasn't able to gain his ability for the past hours was to prepare for this moment.

"Very good."

The test was as simple as that. Again, it is up to me to decide when to start and end the test. He knows that the test doesn't end until he is being recognized.

That's right, the demons' right was revised by the progenitor and added various rights and test to build another generation of demons. He made sure to create this generation's demons to be indomitable demons.

But according to myself, there isn't enough time to rebuild that kind of demons until some miracle revises it. Meaning, there'll be something or someone that will crush that plan of his.

Right now, I'm not sure when that will happen, but it won't be long until it appears.

Back to this demon, he's quiet as an awareness for another test. But I decided that that's it for now. Not that I would tell him. It is also to keep himself alarmed whenever I might appear and initiate a test.

Since he cannot sense my presence until I call him out, it is required to stay on guard whenever that happens.

"I observed your actions for the past three hours. What do you think you're doing?"

"Forgive me, Takashi-sama. It seems like I won't be able to achieve my ability for today."

"Do you think you're making the blood I gave you as bootless?"

"I certainly deny that fact, Takashi-sama. However, it is my determination and motivation that was impractical."

"I see, then let me show you benefits of a superior's blood."

I went closer to the demon, making him uneasily flinch while taking few steps back until I dashed and punched his head. My hand went through his skull as I gave him some of my blood. This kind of transaction is what the progenitor did to the former 3rd higher demon moon according to his memories.

Superior's blood refers to the blood I had given him to become a demon. My blood consists half of the progenitor's blood so it is determined as superior's blood.

Its benefits is obviously becoming stronger. With this, he'll be able to exceed his limits and be able to obtain his abilities.

And this, is when my duty today ends.

I guided him to become a demon that can make the progenitor recognize him.

From a shameless human vagabond to a powerful disciplined demon.

In the distance, I sensed an overwhelming intent of a human being.

Now I kinda wonder.

When will she show herself, however?

"Am I right, Flower Pillar?"

It seems my guess was right. I heard a soft gasp as the figure flinched but I told Tairuku to deal with her.

Because right now isn't the right time to deal with demon hunters.

Especially a Hashira.
