Chapter 23
I carried my tray of bread and soup over to an empty table in a corner. I sat down at the very edge and began to eat.
People all around me were talking excitedly with their friends. Everything here brought back countless memories that I spent with Cecilia back in the real world in the cafeteria after doing a bunch of Math tests.
I looked down at my food. The bread appeared soggy and the soup had Te color of... gray.
I sighed.
I would rather eat my mom's failed French Toast. The ones that are burned and almost killed.
"Hi," someone said from my left. I looked up to see three people standing there, two boys and one girl that sent of dark waves.
"Can we sit next to you since everywhere else is full?" the boy with town floppy hair asked and smiled.
"Uh, sure," I answered. I scooted over a little for them to sit down.
"Thank you!" the boy with chin cropped blonde hair said quietly.
They plopped down and began to eat.
"Say, we never got your name," the boy with town hair said with a mouthful of food.
"I'm Karen. Karen Ackerman," I answered simply. I don't know who these people are, but I need to find out whether I can trust them or not first.
The boy with blonde hair almost dropped his spoon.
"Y-You're the Karen Ackerman?!" he gasped. "As in C-Corporal Levi's daughter?!"
I rolled my eyes.
"Yeah," I said sarcastically." "As in the retarded dwarf's amazing daughter."
The brown haired boy stopped eating and stared at me in fear.
"Um... you won't make me run laps right?" he asked fearfully. I shook my head.
"I'm not my dad. I won't scare the hell out of people. I just confuse them to the point where they believe 1+1=3 with the condom," I grinned. It with an inside joke I shared with Cecilia.
The boy sweat dropped.
"Um.. okay..." he stuttered. "Anyways, I'm Eren. Eren Jeager."
"And I'm Armin Arlet," the shy blonde haired boy said.
"I'm Mikasa Ackerman," the girl that sent off bad waves said monotonously like my dad. I already have second thoughts about this girl.
"Nice to mean y'all," I said and extended out my hand. Eren shook it. Armin just nodded and Mikasa stayed seated in her seat, stiffly.
For the rest of dinner, we talked and laughed with each other. But deep inside of me, I knew that I couldn't trust them. They'll just turn on me the second they get like Cecilia did. I decided to forget the past and live a new life in the future.
I finished my last piece of bread and stood up, holding my tray firmly in my hands.
"Well, it was nice meeting you all," I said with a slight bow of my head. "I'll be going now. Goodnight."
I turned and walked over to the table where I set down my tray and left.
The hallways leading to my room were dark with only the moon light from the windows showing me where to go and not go crashing into walls.
I paused beside a window and looked outside. It was actually beautiful to look at.
The moon illuminated everything, making things stand out more than usual.
I smiled and stepped closer to the window. I looked up into the sky and stared at the moon. It just so happened that today was a Fullmoon.
"Hey, Fullmoon," I said. "If you can hear me, please show me what I'm doing right now is right. Please don't let me regret this."
No one answered me, but the moon seemed to glow brighter. I guess one of the gods above heard me or something.
"Karen, what the hell are you doing there?" an all-to-familiar cold voice snapped me out of my trance and into reality. I whipped my head around to see Levi walking towards me with a pissed off look on his face. "Cadets are supposed to head off to bed as soon as dinner is over. So, what are you doing?" He hardened his glare.
I rolled my eyes and replied sarcastically,"Oh, so moon gazing is illegal now, is it?"
Levi narrowed his eyes.
"You're we looking at the moon?" he asked in a dangerously low tone.
"Yeah, I was. Got a problem with that?" I said, returning his harsh glare.
"Did anything happen?" my father's voice was barely above a whisper. "Like, anything unusual?"
I stared at him.
"No...?" I said slowly. My dad appeared to be hiding something from me again and by the looks, this secret is big.
Levi sighed and waved his hand.
"Never mind. Just go to bed," he said and left without saying anything else.
"What was that?" I asked aloud. "I feel like something bad is about to happen. But what is it?"
The gods are rising once more... a voice that I vaguely remembered from my dream whispered. A hero must be chosen to protect the real and anime world...
"What?!" I said aloud and turned all around me, trying to pin point the voice, but nothing was there. Just air.
Karen... Karen Ackerman... the vice whispered again.
"Can you please tell me who you are?" I demanded. "You know me, but I don't know you. That's unfair."
The voice didn't answer me for a second as if it was deciding that telling me its name will be wise. I just stood there, waiting for its reply.
Finally, it answered in a faint voice,'I am Niria, your shadow.'
