Short Story- A Finite to Replace Infinity
I stared at the fields. I stood on Beaker Hill, looking over the farm. It was a cold fall evening. The wind whistled in my ears the leaves crunched, even when I was still. I watched the stalks shiver in the wind.
"Jackie! Come inside!"Ma yelled to me from the house. I started to shuffle down the hill, trying to soak up every last drop of peace and serenity around me.
"NOW JACKIE!" Ma was quite upset. I stopped my shuffling with loud crunches of leaves following as I shifted my weight. I got down on the ground and rolled down the hill like the twigs that fell from the cherry trees.
I breathed in the country air as I rolled down, down down...
I don't understand how people can live in a city such as New York. The green space is lacking and the pollution is suffocating. I went to New York one summer as part of a field trip- I am home schooled so that is why we get to go on such fun field trips- and after just one day I had a massive headache from all of the fumes and pollution, I did get a piece of spray paint art though.
As I reached the bottom of Beaker Hill, I slowed to a stop, still not wanting to go back inside, I just lay on the ground.
After laying at the bottom of the hill for a while, I sprang up and started running through the corn fields. I felt as though I had grown wings and flew.
I almost passed the barn, but I skidded to a halt and decided to feed the animals one last time since I hadn't fed them in a while.
I went inside and was instantly bombarded by the stench of animal waste. It was a good thing I stopped by the barn! The poor animals would have had to cope with that stench until morning, along with the extra maggots and flies.
I filled up the pig's troughs with leftover food scraps from our past meals. I filled the water bowls and I fed the cats in the loft. Then I stepped outside the barn to feed the horses and sheep that decided to step outside. The cows were on a different side of the farm, and there was plenty of grass to eat. The chicken coop wasn't far away, but I had just fed the chickens and gathered their eggs earlier that day. I then went inside before Ma yelled again. If I waited any longer there would be a grounding in my future.
I sprinted to the house. I practically broke down the door trying to get inside. Turns out my brother Mike - who was turning 17 in a week- was holding the door closed. "Shoulda been faster Pipsqueak!" Mike jeered with a mighty sneer stretching across his face. "Stop calling me Pipsqueak Mike! I'm only 2 years younger than you!" I am actually taller than Mike, so it made no sense for Mike to call me a name that refers to being smaller. But then again, nothing Mike says makes a lick of sense.
I grabbed a chicken drumstick off the table and flew up the stairs to my room before anyone could object.
The next morning when I woke early, I heard faint talking downstairs. I decided to investigate. I crept to the staircase, avoiding all of the creaky boards and saw my parents talking at the table. I waited hoping to hear at least one snippet of their conversation.
"She already got it!"
"I don't know, are you sure?"
"It would cost a lot of money..."
I was just about to yell out "WHAT!?" But then I heard Ma say...
"I guess getting a dog again would be good for the farm and our family."
After a while of excitement and thinking, I was able to fall back asleep.
When I awoke yet again, my alarm clock read 8:00 AM. I got out of bed and put on my slippers. I walked downstairs in the midst of a yawn. Just when my mouth was about to close, it dropped open yet again because sitting with my parents at the table was Nana!
I rushed over to hug her, she's one of my favorite relatives!
"Oh why hello dearie! Would you like a Jolly?" My Nana always calls Jolly Ranchers Jollies. I enveloped her in yet another hug. " Now now sugar cube, how can I give you your gift if I can't move my arms?" I reluctantly let go wondering why she would have a gift for me. While Nana gives me and Mike Jolly Ranchers every time we come see her, she only gives gifts on special occasions. When she does get gifts though, they are ones that you will remember forever.
"Why do you have a gift for me Nana?" I asked still puzzled. "Well I just thought that it was a good time to get a gift." This did not sound like my Nana at all. Which could only mean one thing for the present...
"I hope it's ok" Nana said.
I looked up at her, still grinning like a maniac.
"It's perfect."
"What are you going to name him?" the adults said simultaneously. I thought for a moment, and then I said,
"His name is going to be Finite, because no good thing lasts forever."
