Chapter 8
It was morning. Bird's were chirping and the sun was shining. Well one couldn't tell since they were in the sewers. Everyone was hungover from drinking too much beer last night. They all dragged themselves around the house like zombies. Some washed their faces and took a bath to become sober and others simply drank water or coffee.
The next thing everyone did was have breakfast. It was silent with no one having the energy to talk just yet. Everyone scattered after. Elizabeth left to fulfill her mission, Jak and Eren were having a sparring match, newcomers Priet and Aiden bonded over playing chess, Giorna was busy upgrading the group's firewalls (*Cough* *Cough* Someone almost hacked into their system last time). The only one left was Lavender.
She was still sitted on a chair at the dining table. She looked dazed. A hand was placed on a shoulder and she still stared ahead. "Lavender..." Professor started. "I'm fine really!' She said, turning to him and smiling. The professor sighed, which fogged his glasses. He was cleaning it when he spoke again. "You're feeling useless aren't you?" Lavender looked away. "How do you always manage to read our emotions and minds?" The professor had put back on his glasses.
"I guess it's due to being around people for so long and that of having a degree in psychology" Lavender nodded and swung her legs. The Professor embraced her and held her tight. It pained him to see her like this. "Know this, you're far from useless" "The time will come when you'll be giving an unspoken mission during a situation" "Where none of us will be with you and so you'll make an important decision"
"You don't have anything to do now, but you will later" "You're important to us all and we love you, so please don't degrade yourself like that!" Lavender was stunned. She burst out laughing and wiped her tears. "Ok professor!" "thanks!" The professor nodded and hopped off his chair. Lavender spoke again, interrupting the Professor's movement. "How come we can't read your mind?" "Just like you read ours?" The Professor paused.
"Believe me, you wouldn't like how my mind is filled with dark thoughts" "Everyone has dark thoughts once in a while, but mine is often and it frightens me" "If I were you Lavender, I wouldn't want to read a person's mind let alone mine" Lavender gulped and felt shivers at the words he said. "I'm glad you trust me, but that trust should only be to a certain degree" "Because one day I might betray you all" "Just because we're like family doesn't mean betrayal isn't possible" "It's just a thought for you!" Lavender protested.
"But it's just a maybe and it won't come true!" She wanted to cry at the thought of the professor who was a father figure to them betraying them. The professor shrugged. "But what if that maybe comes true?" he said as he ruffled her hair and smiled. "Now just because I warned you doesn't mean you should be all depressed about it" "Spend your time with me until that day comes or not" Lavender nodded and sniffed in the process then smiled at him as well. "Want to hear this little motto I go by?" Lavender nodded.
"Magic shows and illusions, acting, fiction born from imagination....... You want to know what we have in common with those? We're fake. Fake in most of the things we do. And we'll always be, but that doesn't mean we should let that stop us from living our life. This was a nice talk, wouldn't you say so?" Lavender only hummed in agreement. It felt like whatever tension that had always been there, dissolved with the conversation. The two were feeling a little free, like light had shone on them in their time of darkness. They were smiling genuinely and were doing nothing else as of that moment.
"So I'll head out of the sewers and into the city to go on a nice walk" Lavender gave a thumbs up and watched as the professor disappeared. Lavender smiled, making a yawn escape. She stretched and got down from the dining table. She decided to distract herself by doing the dishes first.
