Chapter 4: Fitting In

Trigger Warnings ⚠️: Mention of past scaring!

Notes: This chapter did come out a little later than I would have liked and isn't too lore driven, but I don't mind since I felt it was well written anyway (it's also a bit more wholesome but does have some little lore details that you should pay attention to for future chapters)! Hope you all don't mind and I hope you guys enjoy this chapter! :)

Coatl’s Pov:

“He's mute.” Those were the words that I hated to hear said aloud. I knew when I died by Elemental's trident something would have been damaged, but when my ability to see was taken from me as well, I strained my voice desperately in order to keep speaking. To make my voice heard. Saying that my efforts were in vain was an understatement.

“M– Mute?! How?” Shy Cyan's hand went from being on my back to embracing me in a careful hug. I… didn't know how to feel about it. My heart suddenly felt like it was banging against my ribcage, but the words of my parents quieted the feeling, whatever it was.

“Mute, Shy. It looks like the Demon Steve here was injured at some point, puncturing their lungs and damaging their vocal cords.” I huffed, resting my head slightly against the taller embracing me. I suddenly felt a small furry creature rub against me and, carefully lifting my hand, I gently ran my fingers through what I felt to be Luna’s fur as I felt her body vibrate with a content purr. I kept in mind that her fur was silky in texture and that she kept moving her head under my hand, only knowing because of my thumbs brushing against her ear. I hadn't noticed it had gone quiet until Leo, I believe from the softer and quicker footsteps, got up and left the house.

“W– Well, it looks like he's doing better here, s– saying that he froze up when Luna first rubbed against him just a few hours ago.” Shy Cyan stuttered out. Kavi sighed, but I heard him walk away before coming back and giving me something… I think it was a carrot by the texture and the stalked leaves at the top. Why was he giving me this? Shy Cyan seemed to have been thinking the same thing.

“W– Why–”

“Because Shy, they're a Demon Steve. They should learn to fit in with us so they seem like less of a threat. They can start by helping me with some farming and you could come too, if you want.” Farming? I wasn't about to complain, but I've never really farmed before. Usually, I would wind up killing the plants by accident and giving any nearby Green Steve's a heart attack, and that's when I wasn't using them for potions or inventions.

“F– Farming? Are you sure th– that's a good idea?” I don't think Kavi was listening, grabbing me by the hand and helping me up, to which Luna yowled in protest. I heard Shy Cyan get up not even a second later as Kavi dragged me out of the house, his grip firm and hands warm but they were different from the others by being riddled with scars and scabs I could feel marking his skin. Part of me wondered if he's faced Demon Steves before, and that's why he acts so cold towards me, or maybe he was a warrior and lost his position? All I know for certain is that Kavi was a mystery to me. While I could usually read people by their tone of voice, the sounds of their footsteps, or the way their hands feel. But Kavi seemed more hardy and difficult to figure out, at least, to someone without eyes. I didn't even notice we stopped until I nearly knocked into him, a growl rising in his throat but he made no other indication that he was about to lunge at me, so I counted that as being safe for now.

“Shy, do you think you could help him with the basics? I have a meeting with the Leader that I'm already late for.” I felt Kavi let go of my hand, and I knelt down, already feeling the small bare patch of dirt in front of me, the carrot still firmly in my other hand.

“O– Oh, sure!” I heard Kavi's footsteps fade, signaling he's left as Shy Cyan crouched down near me. Usually, farmers would use a hoe to dig up the dirt, but since I'm a Demon, it's no surprise they wouldn't trust me with a weapon of any sort.

“O– Okay, I'm not that good with plants, b– but I'll try my best!” I carefully focused as Shy Cyan spoke, guiding my hands with his own and teaching me to garden. It was peaceful, and I suddenly realized why the Green Steve's loved this so much. I hadn't noticed the eyes on me after Luna knocked down my hood and curled up in it until after I had finished planting the carrot, two sounds of footsteps sounding off. I didn't know how long it had been, but the air temperature dropped. Surely that means it's possibly later in the day? Finally, the two stopped in front of us, one of them I singled out as Kavi, while I didn't know the other one well enough until he spoke.

“Well, I must say I'm pleasantly surprised. And here I thought my right hand had been lying to me.” The Orange Leader spoke, his tone of voice strangely soft and even a little joyous sounding. Kavi coughed nonchalantly. I think he was trying hard not to be offended by his Leader's comment. Me and Shy Cyan stood up, though I was careful not to jostle Luna, who was softly snoring in the hood of my hoodie.

“Come, Demon Steve. I think there's much we need to talk about since you'll be staying here.” I nodded, following behind the Leader with Shy Cyan as Kavi followed after us.

“Oh, and before we go, I might mention that a guest will be joining us. You might remember him, but please be on your best behavior.” I don't know who he was talking about or if being on “your best behavior” was directed at me or not. Turns out it was, since after the air around us warmed up, signaling yet another house, I heard a voice that I honestly felt… happy to hear again?

“Hello, Demon Steve, Shy, Kavi. I hope you've all been settling in well with the new arrangements, but I think it's time I formally introduced myself. I'm Spirit, pleasure to meet you all, especially you… Coatl.” Oh no...
