Today just for fun I'm going to try a game of word association. I've got a copy of the novel Dune by Frank Herbert and I'm going to open it to 10 random pages, select the first word I see and then write the first thing that comes to mind. Since it's a science fiction novel I'm thinking there might be some weird words in there and it'll be interesting to see what I associate with them. All right, here goes nothing!
1. Duke - Earl
2. Crossed - the road (like the chicken)
3. Degrees - Cold
4. Necessities - (Sings the Bear Necessities from the Jungle Book)
5. Kissed - Grandma on the cheek
6. Caladan - reminds me of Caliban, who I believe is a Shakespearean character, but who I associate with a mutant from the X-Men comics.
7. Fewer - Less... (I know that's a boring answer, but it's the first thing that popped in my head)
8. Other - The Others on the TV show Lost.
9. Paul's - something that belongs to my uncle, who happens to be named Paul.
10. Her - That girl.
Hmm... Well that was kind of interesting. Some of my responses seemed pretty basic, but I guess that's likely to happen with first responses. I really tried to react quickly and not overthink it.
I only got one word that I don't know what the heck it is, which would be Caladan. I actually got Duke twice, but I decided to skip it the second time and choose something else. There must be a lot of Dukes in there. I read Dune back when I was in high school, but that was a long time ago, so I don't remember much. I do remember the main character was Paul Atreides so it's not too surprising I got Paul's as one of my random word choices. I'm planning on re-reading it sometime soon, which is why I had a copy close to hand.
At any rate, that was kind of fun. I might have to try it again sometime with a different book.
