Chapter Four

Draco stole a french fry from Scorpius' plate on his way to the kitchen, listening as his son let out a cry of indignation. "Dad!"

"Mm?" Draco hummed innocently, smiling at his son.

"You stole a fry!"

"What? No I didn't!"

"Yuh-huh! I saw you!"

"No evidence," Draco protested, licking his lips clean and crossing his holding his hands out, showing they were empty. "See? I don't see any fries."

Scorpius dropped another fry into his father's hand, pointing at him with a loud shout of "Aha! Eve-vee-dence!"

"That's entrapment, and it's illegal, I'll have you know," Draco huffed, tossing the fry into his mouth none the less. Scorpius just giggled.

"Alright, what time is it Scor? We've got to go drop off that thank-you basket at Mrs. Granger's house."

After hearing about how Hermione had heroically recued Draco from the 'horrible metal gun pieces', Scorpius had insisted that they bring her a basket thanking her, so Draco took Scorpius to the store and let him pick out whatever he wanted. Granted, that led to a rather weird assortment, but Draco let him do it anyways. He was only five.

Draco found her number and address written on a piece of paper tucked into his uniform when he went to turn it in for a new one and had decided to pay her a visit anyways, just to catch up.

Scorpius squinted at the clock. "24:35!" He declared proudly.

"Oh jeez, well we're going to be late if we don't hurry!" Draco gasped, not bothering to tell him that 24:35 wasn't a real time.

Scorpius gasped too, rushing towards the entryway to put on his shoes, Draco chuckling as he tucked the basket under one arm and pulled his own shoes on. After getting into his car and buckling Scorpius into his heat, he followed the address to a hotel, where he assumed they were staying while taking care of Hermione's parents. After finally getting to the door, Draco convinced Scorpius to knock. The small boy was propped up on his hip, holding the basket in both hands.

"Coming!" A voice called, and a few moments later the door cracked open. Hermione grinned, opening the door much wider once she saw who it was. "Draco! I'm so glad you decided to stop by! How's your back feeling?"

"Much better, thanks to you," he smiled politely, looking down at Scorpius and nudging him slightly. "Well? What do you have?"

"Erm..." Scorpius blushed, tentatively holding out the basket. "Thanks for saving my daddy."

Hermione grinned brightly, taking the basket. "Why thank you Scorpius. Aren't you so sweet?" She switched her look to Draco. "Would you two like to come in?"

Draco looked over at Scorpius, who was peering around Hermione and at a small girl who was hugging her mothers legs. "I think Scorpius would like to say hi," Draco grinned lightly, "if we're not intruding."

"Of course not! We just finished lunch, come on in!"

Hermione stepped aside, allowing Draco and Scorpius inside. After Draco put his son down, he leaned over and whispered "sorry about the basket, Scorpius insisted on buying it all by himself."

She chuckled, shrugging in a 'what can you do' manner. "No problem. I wasn't expecting anything to begin with."

"Ron! Vivian! We've got a guest!"

Ron lumbered out from a room out of view, Vivian following closely behind, looking mildly surprised when he saw Malfoy. "Oh. Hey- Mione told me she saw you a few weeks ago."

"Yeah. Nice to see you again, Weasley," Draco smiled politely, reaching out to shake his hand. Looking surprised, Ron took it, offering a half-smile.

"You too Malfoy. You look good, for have, y'know, gotten shot."

Draco laughed. "Thanks, I think."

"Daddy?" Scorpius tugged at his hand lightly and Draco looked down, kneeling down slightly.

"Yes sweetheart?"

"Can I play?"

Glancing at Hermione to make sure it was okay, he nodded, ruffling his hair. "Of course you can."

Despite his nonchalance about it, he was secretly ecstatic. Scorpius never played with others- He was diagnosed with autism when he was three, and that pretty heavily impacted his behavior around others, and even around Draco sometimes. He was incredibly bright, he just didn't really play with kids or know how to talk to people, and sometimes his speech, so when he saw him toddler-stumble over to shyly say hi to Hermione and Ron's kids, he couldn't help but grin, joining Hermione at the table, Ron also sitting down.

"So, Mione told me you're a police officer?"

Draco nodded, accepting Hermione's offer of some fresh coffee. "Yeah, I have been for six- no, seven years now."

Ron nodded. "Nice. I like it around here- Real quiet, thanks to you most the time I'm assuming."

Draco offered a half-grin as he took the cup of coffee from Hermione, who took a seat across from Draco and next to her husband, sliding him a cup of coffee as well. "Seen some crazy stuff in this town, for sure, but it isn't bad. I'd like to be somewhere more active, but I can't really do that with my son. He's more important."

"Yeah, you have a kid?" Ron spoke up, looking surprised. "That was a shock- I haven't really heard much of anything about you since school."

"Oh yeah, Scorpius. I got married the year after school- arranged marriage with Astoria Greengrass. She passed giving birth to him."

"Sorry to hear that, mate."

Draco shrugged with another half-smile. "Appreciate it. You have kids too?"

"Yeah- Rose is five, Vivian is two. They're sweet girls. How old is Scorpius?"

"Five as well."

Draco glanced over to where Rose was coloring, sharing her colored pencils with Scorpius while Vivian played with his hair. He was being surprisingly tolerant, considering how little he liked other kids or people touching him.

Across the table, Hermione snickered, and Draco realized she was going through the basket. Draco flushed as she pulled out a plastic Spider-Man watch, raising a brow. Draco merely shrugged helplessly. "I took him to the store so he could make a basket, I honestly don't know what's in there at this point."

She pulled out the watch, an apple, three different plastic bracelets, a surprisingly expensive-looking pair of earrings, a stress ball (also with Spider-Man on it), some sort of caterpillar décor that was actually pretty cute, a book titled 'Spider-Man's Great Misadventures' and a large cheesecake that was resting on the bottom.

By the end, all three of them were laughing, trying to hold it in so that the other three kids wouldn't get curious. "Well, give him my thanks," Hermione grinned. "I'm sure I'll find a new fascination with Spider-Man."

"You have to now, you've got all the merch," Draco teased, shaking his head as if it were obvious.

Surprisingly, it was a couple hours before Scorpius politely asked to leave, telling Draco that he was tired and wanted to go to bed.

Draco had immediately picked up his son, kissing him on the cheek and telling him that of course they could leave before putting him down and telling him to go put on his shoes and find his jacket before turning to the couple.

"I hate to intrude, but I was wondering if we could do this again sometime? Scorpius has never been so... Open around kids before, and I think it would be very good for him."

"Our door is always open." Surprisingly, it was Ron who said it, but Hermione nodded in agreement.

"Of course Draco. You're fun to be around, and Rose and Vivian seem to really like Scorpius too."

He couldn't help but grin, shaking their hands. "I'll see when I've got off. Scorpius, did you say bye to your friends?"

Scorpius nodded, reaching up towards Draco. As soon as he picked him up, Scorpius' head dropped down to rest on his shoulder, eyes half-lidded. "Bye Rose. Bye Vivy. Bye Mister and Miss." Multiple voices said goodbye back, and Draco left, offering the family one last smile.

Scorpius was asleep before they made it to the car.
