Chapter Nineteen

While waiting for Conrad, my thoughts wandered towards humans. They were still unsafe. Fortunately, there hadn't been any news about their deaths anymore but it could change anytime. We had to stop the witchlings.
I wished I could inform humans about the danger. But I was a witch, a creature they despised. I still remembered our history. In the time before people were writers, when the spoken words were the way of the world, we were the wise women. They would come to us for help, to heal their loved ones or to protect them from negative energy. They would ask, "witch?" My ancestors always helped them, healed their worried soul and they would be happy again. Then came the fear of the paranoid ones, and "witch?" became "witch!" We were always their friends, only using simple words to heal. I sighed sadly. Closing my eyes, I wished things could change. I didn't want them to die; they shouldn't be killed without a reason.
My eyes snapped open as a faint floral smell reached my nose. Small golden particles hung low in the air, scattered throughout the white room. I could tell that they were pixie dust by their smell and appearance. Soon the scattered pixies started to assemble near the entrance of Conrad's room; every small golden dust started to rush towards the same location. The pixies started to spin like a tornado, creating a wall between me and the door. Suddenly, they stopped, making Selene and Nick visible to me. They had used pixie dust for teleportation.
"You could have walked," I deadpanned.
"Too lazy for that," Nick answered while trying to catch a pixie before they disappeared.
I was about to question him again when the door opened, a rattling sound echoing around the room.
Conrad entered the room, glaring at Nick for standing in his way. He clutched his fists when his eyes found mine; fire and rage were swirling in his narrowed grey eyes. His hand pushed Nick out of his way and he stood beside me, completely ignoring my presence. I glanced over at Conrad's face, still smouldering underneath his stoic expression. His rage seemed pointless to me, but it wasn't the right time to talk about it.
Turning towards Nick, I asked, "did you find something in those blood samples?"
"Yes," he said, grimacing. Selene and Nick looked at each other, an expression of wariness evident on their face.
"I don't know about their coven," he uttered.
My brows furrowed in confusion; it wasn't possible for him to be unaware of an entire coven.
"How is that possible?"
"Are you lying to us?" Conrad and I asked simultaneously.
Nicolai clutched his fists, fangs glinting in the dim light of Conrad's room. "No, I am not lying to you," growled Nick, glaring at Conrad.
His eyes softened when he turned towards me. Taking a deep breath, he said, "Eva, I know that it's not possible but trust me, please, I don't know how they are alive without being bound to their king. They are not wild vampires; I can feel that they are from a coven but their coven isn't connected to me."
I believed him. I knew it wasn't possible for vampires to be alive without the king's blood but his eyes screamed honesty. I couldn't doubt Nicolai. I trusted my brother with my life. A gasp was heard and we all turned towards Selene who had a horrified expression on her face, her shoulders raised in fear. Conrad started to look around frantically.
"She's having a vision," I informed him.
Selene's blue eyes began to turn yellow. Long blonde hair started to twirl near her face, skin turning almost translucent. Her body was rigid, mouth half open in a silent scream. The bright aureate glow coming from her eyes intensified so much that it started to sting my eyes. Closing my eyes, I waited for her to come to her senses. My hands started to shake as the memories of her last vision resurfaced in my mind. Last time when Selene had a vision, I lost my mother. I was certain that it wouldn't be good this time too. My body started to shake as the images of my broken father flashed by my eyes.
A nudge on my shoulder snapped me out of my dark thoughts. I opened my eyes to find Conrad shielding me from Selene, his face a picture of worry and concern. After inhaling and exhaling a couple of times, I nodded at him to convey that I was feeling alright now. I quickly pushed him away when I saw that the bright light started to diminish.
Selene looked around frantically, wide-eyed, stopping just when she spotted me. She looked absolutely terrified. I walked closer to hug her.
"You're fine, you're safe here," I assured her.
"I saw Alpha King," Selene said, panting.
"We'll hear about it," I said, holding her cold hand, "try to calm down first." I rubbed her cold hands as she took deep breaths to lower her heartbeat. I stepped back when her eyes returned to their normal state, her face more relaxed and in control.
"I saw the Alpha King with two men. Their faces weren't visible to me; I could only see their silhouettes. One man was standing beside Alpha and they both were pointing their fingers in the direction of the other man," she explained.
"Alright, so in your vision, this wolf was standing with person A and they were pointing at person B, that's it?" Nick asked, furrowing his brows in concentration.
Selene nodded, hands clutching into fists.
"There's more. Isn't it?" Conrad asked.
Selene looked at me and nodded. I knew that something was troubling her. She saw something in that vision which wouldn't be a good news for us. My heart rate sped up when she started to speak.
"These two people, person A and person B, were silhouettes to me but the person who was standing with Alpha King had a white glowing outline on the outside but his soul was completely dark. I saw a snake on his head like a crown and the one who he was pointing finger at had a dark outline but his soul was pure white. A crest was displayed on his head, it had a leaf-like structure."
There was complete silence in the room after Selene stopped speaking. We all understood her vision; it was simple and clear. The leaf structure was the emblem of wild creek pack and the snake was the dark witchling's familiar. But that's wasn't what troubled me.
Conrad, Nick and I looked at each other, both of them looking distressed. I felt the same. I didn't know if we should thank moon goddess for helping us or be scared that we still haven't caught the traitor.
"We're pointing our fingers in the wrong direction."
