Chapter Five

I always admired people who kept calm in any situation. The way they found calmness in an absolutely chaotic environment was a skill I would like to learn. In the midst of movement and chaos, they were able to keep that stillness inside them. But, today it felt like I had already found my calm. In my state of chaos, thoughts of those grey eyes wrapped a blanket of tranquillity and protection around me. I didn't even realize how strong our bond was until now.

"Have you decided to come with me?" A deep, gravelly voice questioned, and my magic sparked.

I turned to find him staring at me with such an intensity that it almost took my breath away. I would have gladly accepted him if both of us didn't have this huge responsibility of taking care of two supernatural species. But the truth was that we both belonged to two different worlds among different people, and things wouldn't be as simple as I wanted them to be.

"Yes, I have," I concurred. My heart almost gave up on me when I saw him walking towards me. He was tall, really tall. I was busy thinking about how my chin only came up to his shoulder when he suddenly pulled me close to him.

I had to remind my lungs to breathe when I felt his strong arms around my waist. I was completely engulfed in his scent. It was a smell that was distinctly male and completely his own. It was a smell that made me feel all warm and protected. I yelped when I felt him kiss my neck. I tried to get away from him, but he only tightened his arms around me.

"What are you doing?" I asked. In response, he only growled and further tightened his arms around me. Great, he was trying to suffocate his own mate.

"I will be coming with you tomorrow, no need to suffocate me today," I deadpanned, rolling my eyes.

He let me go this time, but he was still standing quite close to me. I still remembered my mother's words. She would always tell me about the importance of a mate, someone who was an integral part of your soul. Someone who would always love you unconditionally, who could make you feel complete. I remembered everything, and I understood that she wasn't wrong; she never was. His eyes made me feel things I had never felt before. His voice made my breath hitch, and my heart always skipped a beat when he was near me. But I was so scared, so damn scared to give in to those feelings. I saw my father's condition when my mother was killed. How desperate he was, how lonely he was. I always wanted the kind of love they had, but when I saw him begging and crying for my mother, I began doubting if this love was worth it.

Yes, it was beautiful. Love as a feeling was one of the best feelings anyone could ever experience. And I truly believed that I was lucky to come across my soulmate so soon when some people have to live a life without getting a chance to meet them. But was it really worth it? My father left me, and if Selene had not been with me, I would have died of loneliness. My father's love for my mother was so strong that even his daughter couldn't bring him any pleasure. I lost my father and mother on the same day, because for my father, his mate was his world. His entire being revolved around her. I wasn't able to make him feel any happiness. Not a bit.

But as I stood beside my mate, gazing at his alluring grey eyes, thinking about the worth of love, I suddenly realized how foolish I was. As much as I loved controlling everything, I had no control over this feeling. It was bound to happen; we were soulmates, and it was impossible to be apart from your soul. That's what we were to each other, broken parts of one soul that were fortunate enough to stumble upon each other. And I was being an idiot for even thinking about not giving him a chance. I still didn't know if love was worth every trouble, or if he was worth it, but I had to give us a chance. I didn't love him yet, but I would regret it if I let him go alone. I was beginning to lean on him when someone clearing their throat snapped us out of our daze. I jumped away from him to see Selene standing with a smirk on her face.

"Should I pack your bags, Princess?"

I raised my eyebrows after hearing her question. Selene was a powerful witch of her coven, a former leader. She wasn't my maid, and she never did my chores for me. Judging by the teasing glint in her eyes, she wasn't planning on doing my chores for me this time either.

"No, Selene, I will pack my bags. Thank you for your offer," I said sternly, after which that cunning witch smiled knowingly and turned towards our castle.

"I should go pack my bags for tomorrow," I said. Turning towards my mate, I respectfully bowed to him.

"Don't," declared Conrad. I frowned after hearing those words. My heart broke a little when I thought that he gave up on me. It must have shown on my face because his eyes softened a bit, and he explained himself.

"Don't bow to me. You're my queen-you don't need to bow down to anyone, " he ordered.

My heart melted right there, and I also came to a realization that he deserved an apology.

"Conrad, I am sorry. I... I... don't know how to explain. I am... really sorry, " I stammered.

I wanted to say more, much more. I wanted to explain how hard it was for me to open up to anyone. I wanted to tell him that I never wanted to hurt him, but I couldn't. My feelings were so overwhelming that I could feel my throat closing; it felt like I would choke on my own feelings when he put his fingers under my chin and made me look into his eyes. As soon as I saw his eyes, I felt a sense of calm wash over me. His eyes, for once, weren't guarded. They were soft like melted pools of grey. I could stare at his eyes for eternity without getting bored. His eyes were absolutely breathtaking.

"Does that mean that you're giving me a chance?" he asked.

"I am giving us a chance," I answered with a smile on my face.

His eyes brightened, and a big smile broke out on his face. My heart skipped a beat upon seeing how his smile completely transformed his face.

I would apologize to him every day if only I could see that bewitching smile each time I said sorry.

Have you ever met someone who's smile completely changed their face?
