CHAPTER SIXTEEN

SHOULD HAVE STAYED IN BED

Meilani huffed as she followed Stiles past the ranger's cabin near the woods. "Stiles, what are we doing here?"

"You'll see," Stiles sang as he continued to lead Meilani along.

"Stiles, can't I just go back to sulking in my bed? Scott acts like I no longer exist and my mom is constantly freaking out over what happened back at the school. I'm lucky I even got out of the house." It had been a long weekend for Meilani. Every time she tried talking to her twin, Scott would just turn the other way or treat Meilani as if she were completely invisible. It was rough having the one person she always had by her side no longer be there.

Meilani understood why Scott was upset with her, but it didn't make the thought of him wanting nothing to do with her hurt any less than it already did. She just wished that everything could go back to the way they were before she got bit.

"Well, your mom isn't the sheriff okay? No comparison there," Stiles countered, sounding just as over the situation as Meilani was.

"Can you please just tell me what we're doing out here?"

"Yes. When your girlfriend gets ditched -"

"I didn't get ditched," Meilani cut Stiles off, finally catching up to him and walking beside him instead of behind him. "We're just having a rough patch in our sibling-ship that's all."

Stiles gave Meilani a look before he stopped in the middle of a small clearing in the woods with a group of big rocks surrounding the area. "Okay, fine. When your girlfriend is going through a rough patch in her sibling-ship..." -he fished out a bottle of scotch from his pocket and held it up - "You get her drunk."

Meilani crossed her arms and raised an eyebrow. "You know, normal boyfriends would just talk to their girlfriend about the situation and give them advice on what to do."

Stiles shrugged as he began to walk backwards towards the rocks. "Who said anything about me or you being normal?"

Not having anything to argue that with, Meilani silently and reluctantly followed after her boyfriend.

About an hour later, Meilani sat on top of one of the rocks while Stiles laid on the ground next to it completely drunk. The bottle of scotch was half gone already and most of that was from Stiles. Meilani had no more than five swigs from the bottle. She knew he was wasted because he had been drunkenly mumbling some sort of monologue for the past fifteen minutes. On what, she couldn't really tell because it was mainly gibberish. Scott's name came up a few times, so she could only assume it had something to do with her and Scott being on the rocks right now. Ironically, she was sat on a rock and Meilani began to think the universe was just out for a big laugh against her.

Meilani wasn't even sure she really wanted to know what Stiles was going on about. She just knew she wasn't drunk and still felt numb overall from the whole situation. She half wished her new body would allow her to get drunk and not immediately kill the alcohol so the pain could go away even for just an hour. Meilani sighed and laid across the rock, throwing her arm over her face.

"I know it hurts," Stiles slurred as the hand he pointed at Meilani swayed drastically back and forth. "Actually, I don't because I don't have siblings. However, as much as being ignored by your sibling sucks, it would suck even worse if you were alone."

Meilani looked over to Stiles and just shook her head while she laughed at his drunken stupidity. "That made no sense, Sti."

Stiles went to grab for the bottle again when another hand grabbed it and held it up.Β

"Well, look at these two getting their drink on."

Meilani sat up to see two burly thugs standing in front of them. The both of them wore mocking smiles while they stared down at the two teens, one of which was drunk and had no idea what was going on. "Give it back," she ordered calmly as she glared up at the two men.

"Oh the princess has a bite, huh?" the taller thug mocked, the bottle still in his hand.

"I think she wants another drink," the smaller thug added on with a smirk as he stepped closer.

"I want. The bottle," Meilani ordered again, but a lot less calm this time.

Stiles pushed himself up to lean against the rock behind him, looking at the two men warrily. "Babe, maybe we should just go."

Meilani hopped off the rock and slowly made her way over to the thugs. "My boyfriend came to have a good time. So... give me the bottle now."

The taller thug with the bottle just laughed in Meilani's face as he took a swig from the bottle.

Time to play bad cop, Meilani thought to herself as she squared her shoulders. "Give me the bottle," she demanded. The thugs' laughter quickly died down as they noticed Meilani's eyes turn from brown to yellow and her nails grow into claws.

"Lani..." Stiles warned, his eyes widening at what his girlfriend just did.

The thug quickly shoved the bottle into Meilani's hand and took off in the other direction with his friend.

Meilani scoffed and rolled his eyes. "Punks," she mumbled before she turned on her heel and trekked out of the woods while Stiles scrambled after her.

"Please tell me that was because Scott isn't speaking to you," Stiles begged as he continued to rush after Meilani past the Ranger's cabin. "Or because tomorrow night is the full moon."

Meilani just ignored Stiles' questioning and opened the passenger side door on Stiles' Jeep for him to get him.

"Going home now, yeah?" Stiles slurred as he slouched against the seat.

Meilani just shut Stiles' door and walked around the car to get into the driver's seat. She knew she should have stayed home tonight.

At seven AM the next day Meilani's alarm woke her up and she buried her face in her pillow and pulled her blanket up above her head. The news that had woken her up was suddenly shut off. She peeked out from her barrier to see her mom with her hand over the snooze button.

"Maybe we should switch this buzzer," Melissa sighed and crouched down next to Meilani's bed. She slowly pulled back the blanket to reveal Meilani's face. She pushed some of Meilani's hair away from her face and gave her a soft smile. "You alive in there, hermit?"

"No," Meilani replied with a frown. "Can I stay in bed for the rest of my life?"

Β "Nice try, sweetie. Is this about your brother?" Melissa asked as Meilani pushed herself out of bed and began to make her way over to her bathroom. "Do you want to talk about it?"

Meilani turned to face her mom and sighed softly. "Mom, I love you. I do. This thing with Scott and I, though, I don't think it can be fixed right now. He hates me."

"Honey, you guys are brother and sister - twins. You guys are as thick as thieves. I'm sure this whole thing will blow over the end of the day. I can't see you two arguing for this long,"Β Melissa assured Meilani.

Meilani stepped back into her bathroom and sadly laughed. "Well, I think this is one fight that is bigger than Scott and I."Β

Without another word, Meilani quietly closed the door and got ready for a day she didn't want to go through.

"Thanks for picking me up, Sti," Meilani said as the two drove to school. "I don't think I could sit through a silent car ride with my brother and my mom trying to make awkward small talk. I'm already tortured enough. I don't need her mom-ing up the situation."

Stiles placed his hand on Meilani's leg and rubbed it comfortingly. "She's just trying to help you and Scott make up, babe. I would try too if I knew what to do to help. I know you can't tell him what was really happening that night, but there's got to be something you can tell him right?"

"If there is, I wish I knew what it was," Meilani answered, slouching in her seat. "I just hate that he won't even look at me. Any time we've fought, we've only gone at most a day without talking to each other. This is the worst it has ever been. It kills me that I can't do anything about it either because I can't and won't bring him into this. You already have a target on your back. I can't handle my twin also having one on his back."

"It'll be okay, Lani. I promise," Stiles stated as he pulled into a parking spot close to the front door of the school. "It will all work itself out."

"Don't make promises you can't keep, Stiles," Meilani quipped before she got out of the car and made her way towards the school.

Stiles scrambled out of the car and after his girlfriend. "Meilani!"

Meilani stopped walking and turned to face Stiles. "Just go find out what your dad had to come here for and then meet me in class, okay?" She stepped closer to Stiles and kissed him softly. "I just need a minute okay?"

"Okay..." Stiles sighed and let Meilani walk away from him to go to class.

Meilani stopped at her locker and swapped out her books. She jumped back when her door magically closed on its own. She looked up to see that it was Allison. "Oh, hey, Allison. How are you?"

"Well, it took my dad a good five minutes to let me out of the car today. My aunt Kate was the one who finally got him to unlock the door," Allison responded, fixing her bag on her shoulder. "Um, I just wanted to come see how you were. Any time I would ask Scott, he just brushes me off. So... I'm going to source."

Meilani leaned against the locker and shrugged lazily. "Horrible, I guess. It just hurts having Scott ignore me, you know? Then having all of Beacon Hills go into a crazy frenzy over what happened here... it just sucks. I just want this whole thing to be over."

Allison nodded as if she understood what Meilani said. Meilani knew she wouldn't understand what she was going through since Allison was an only child and never had her close companion treat her as if she were a criminal. She did appreciate Allison trying to understand though. Scott really did pick a great girl to fall in love with.

"Yeah, I know. Just know that if you need anything I'm here for you. Even though I'm Scott's girlfriend, I'm also your friend and want to make sure you're okay."

Meilani smiled and hugged Allison tightly. "Thanks, Allison. You're the best."

Allison pulled away from Meilani as the bell rang. She offered Meilani a small smile before walking off down the hall to where Scott had turned the corner to come looking for her. Meilani and Scott made eye contact across the hallway. His eyes were dark and cold, while Meilani's were vacant and far away. It made Meilani want to flinch because those were the same eyes Scott had given to their mom the day she told them their dad had left in the middle of the night.

Meilani locked her locker and made her way to class quietly. She hoped that Stiles had something interesting to tell her to at least distract her for five minutes from what was going on in her life.

Stiles was already in his seat for the class. He played with his pencil that he was going to use on the test they had that morning. He stopped when he saw Meilani and frowned when he saw her broken expression. He opened his mouth but he wasn't really sure what to say to her. What did one say when their girlfriend was in a fight with their brother and couldn't necessarily do anything about it? So, Stiles just rubbed her shoulders soothingly until Harris announced that he was about to start handing the tests out.

Once Harris announced that they were to begin, Meilani took a deep breath and looked down at her test. It was hard for her to concentrate as the sounds in the room began to grow with each passing second. Students erased answers. The clock ticked above on the wall behind her. A student nervously clicked their pen as they read over the questions. Their heartbeat loud in Meilani's ears as if a drum were being banged in her head.

Shaking her head, Meilani looked down at her test, but flinched back when her eyes landed on one of the questions.

Why would Scott ever forgive you? All you've been doing is lying to him.

Meilani glanced over at Scott who ran a hand through his hair in frustration. Science wasn't his strongest subject and she knew he was probably gonna have the worst time with this test. She knew Allison had been helping him for a while with it and his grades seemed to be getting better ever since. However, the tests still stumped him. Meilani longed to reach out and tell him that he was going to be fine, but she didn't think he would even listen to her right now.

The words on Meilani's test began to swirl and merge together. She rubbed her eyes roughly, blaming it on the lack of sleep she had been getting since that night at school. Meilani blinked once before she looked back down at the test. Another odd question seemed to stare up at her from her test right under the one about Scott.

When the moon is full tonight, will you kill:

A)Β All of your friends?

B) Some of your friends?

C)Β Most of your friends?

D)Β None of the above.

The sounds from the room seemed to grow even worse as time went on. Meilani's head started to pound and she felt her blood pumping hard for absolutely no reason. She finally had enough and rushed out of her seat and out of the classroom. Harris called after her but she simply ignored it and made her way over to the girl's locker room. Her bag fell off somewhere in the hall on her way in, however she didn't care.

Once in the locker room, Meilani ran over to the shower and turned it on to the coldest it could go. She then slid down the wall and wrapped her arms around her knees, burying her face in her knees. Meilani took slow, deep breaths to calm her racing heart as best as she could. She wasn't sure what was making her go crazy, but whatever it was needed to stop. The full moon wasn't for another few hours and it shouldn't be affecting her now... should it?

"Babe?" Stiles called as he crept into the girl's locker room, glancing behind him to make sure no teacher saw him sneak him in there. His footsteps slowed as he approached her.

Meilani raised her head, her now soaking wet hair sticking to the sides of her face and her eyelashes sticking together from the wetness. Her breathing was ragged as her eyes locked with Stiles. "Stiles... I can't..."

"What? What? Are you changing?" Stiles asked, rushing over to Meilani and placing a hand on her knee. "What is it?"

"I can't.... Breathe..." Meilani gasped as she tried to gain her breath back. It was like the room was closing in on her and like someone was squeezing her lungs strong enough to explode them. It felt as if every breath she took in, made it all worse.

Stiles fumbled in his pockets and shoved the inhaler into Meilani's mouth once he got it out. He pressed the pump twice before pocketing it again. "Better?"

Meilani furrowed her brows in confusion. "I was having an asthma attack? I don't even have asthma. Scott does."

"Actually, you were having a panic attack," Stiles corrected, sitting on the floor and ignoring the wet ass he was probably going to have from it. The only thing he cared about at the moment was that Meilani was okay.

"How'd you know to do that?" Meilani questioned, feeling her breathing slowly start to even out.

"I used to get 'em after my mom died," Stiles responded solemnly. "Not fun, huh?"

Meilani ran a hand through her hair and leaned forward with her legs stretched out. "It was awful, Stiles. Scott gave me the look he had the day we found out my dad left us during the night. He's never looked at me like that before. Getting that look was like a sucker punch to the gut."

"It's called heartbreak, Lani. Only about two billion songs written about it," Stiles reminded her and gently began to rub her leg. "It's only natural to feel the way you are, baby."

"Allison at least is talking to me," Meilani sighed as she fiddled with her fingers. "Though I don't know how long that will last since I'm sure Scott will have something to say about it."

"If you think about it, Scott's girlfriend's dad is a werewolf hunter. You're a werewolf. That friendship would be a problem anyway," Stiles dismissed with a wave of his hand. He faltered when he noticed the glare Meilani shooting at him.

"That wasn't helpful." Stiles awkwardly chuckled as he scratched the back of his neck. "Look, Lani, I mean... yeah Scott's pissed at you and it sucks."

Meilani shook her head and leaned back against the wall. "No, that's not it. It was like I could hear everything in the room, feel everyone's emotions around me."

"It's got to be the full moon," Stiles noted. "We'll just lock you up in your room later like I suggested earlier. That way the alpha - whos your boss - can't get to you either."

"I think we need to do a lot more than lock me in my room."

Stiles raised an eyebrow as he tried to process what Meilani had said. "Why? 'Cause if you get out you'll be caught by hunters?"

"No. I think if I get out... I might kill someone."

authors note

hi hey hello. i am SOΒ sorry that this story hasn't been updated in two months now. school got REALLYΒ crazy for me and then my family had to move out. the past three months have been really rough but we're in the new house now and Tuesday is my last day of classes so i'll be able to work on stories more now!

sad meilani is sad and i don't like it. i hate that her and scott have to be in a fight man. their sibling-ship is what i lived for honestly. i'm also not ready to write her yelling lies at stiles in the next chapter because of the full moon. he doesn't deserve that type of treatment, just like she doesn't deserve to be going through what she's going through. it's one big mess and i oddly love but hate it at the same time.Β

there's only about 8 chapters left of this story before it ends and book two begins! i cannot believe we're almost done with season one already. it's been a crazy ride and it's only about to get crazier. so everyone buckle up because none of you are ready.

ANYWAYS, DON'T FORGET TO VOTE AND COMMENT YOUR THOUGHTS! I LOVE HEARING WHAT YOU GUYS THINK.
