1: Kim Yeona
┌────── ⋆⋅✦⋅⋆ ──────┐
You turned into the dark alley as you usually did. The alley wasn't unfamiliar to you. You walked through it every time you went out for the past few years. You could walk through here blindfolded. It was harder for people to track you in small alleys.
You decreased the volume of the songs playing in your ears, so that you could hear what was going on around you. It was just a safety precaution. You could be called paranoid, but you had to be careful. Sometimes people are just waiting for you to make a mistake. In your case, there were many people who were waiting for you to slip and let your cover down. Then they would attack when you were at your weakest.
You would say you were at your weakest point at night. It's not like you hated nights, you hated sleeping at nights and the things it accompanied while you were supposed to be in your dream land.
The moon was bright today. It lit the alley up a little. This worries you. What if someone saw you coming? While you could outrun someone if they come behind you. You knew the exits and had memorised the blueprint of this alley and the alleys surrounding it. Sometimes people were right to think you were paranoid.
The hair on your arms stood up. You felt something and stopped. Rigid on the spot. Slowly, you turned your head around to see whether something was behind you. You narrowed your eyes and scanned the area behind you, removing your headphones and tucking them in your pocket. You trusted your instincts a lot. Sometimes they were wrong, but it was the only thing you trusted in the world.
Just to be safe, you started walking again. This time, at a faster pace, it was barely noticeable. But it made you think you were doing something. You served right into an even darker alley this time. The buildings were barely over three stories. Your heart was beating in your chest. You were thinking of removing your shoes and running, but you were on a road, not grass. It would be harder for you to run if a piece of glass pierced your naked feet, not to mention the pain.
You pulled the hood of your jacket over your brown hair. It was like the stars were watching you. Seeing all the turns you took, counted the steps you walked and told it to someone. Only if you could get to know who the person was. You stopped in your tracks.
Someone was watching you like the stars. At a distance, but close enough to be seen. If only you could catch a glimpse...
If you turned abruptly, they would disappear. Now the buildings were no longer a mode of escape. Looks like the congested alleys are your only way to get out. You could escape on foot, but you always preferred buildings. It was easy to trick people's eyes on top of the roofs. Especially at night.
Then you heard the sound of the heel of a shoe hitting the road. It was behind you, but not close enough to catch you. Maybe the owner of the shoe realized you had heard them and stopped.
You were screwed. Completely screwed. So you decided to make a run for it. Not the best idea, but it was the only option. You run, not looking behind you to see if someone is following.
You ran down alleys. For your small size, you ran pretty fast. Turning left, you came on a wider road near the Han River. You fished the phone out of your pocket and threw it into the river. At least the person following you wouldn't get hold of your phone to get more information on you than they already had. And you could always buy a new phone as soon as you were out of trouble. This phone wasn't that important, it was a more personal phone. Your other phone had the contacts and information of your clients saved.
You searched your pockets, trying to find some other important things to throw away. There was nothing in them, expect some spare change left from the time you stopped to get coffee. Maybe you shouldn't have gone out. It just got you in trouble. But who were these people?
Did you know them? What did they want from you? Were they a hitman? But who would want to kill you? Okay, there were a lot of people.
The footsteps were heard more clearly now. Like the person didn't care if you could hear them. They must be desperate to catch you. You turned your head and looked at the top of the building. You could make out a male figure crouching at the edge of the last building. Looking at you, waiting for you to be captured. You looked around again. Maybe you could jump in the river, except you didn't know how to swim. And you didn't want to die by drowning. What if the person who was chasing you jumped in after you and saved you? You would be captured. That was even worse. You could hide in a corner and then run away when you found a window.
From the corner of your eye, you saw a small gully. If you could outrun the person chasing you here. You weren't aware of where the gully led to, but you had to take the risk. Maybe you could climb on top of a building. You wouldn't let these people get to you.
The gully was barely lit. It would be the perfect place to make your escape, except you had never been here before. Seoul was a big city. You knew the areas near your house, but this was new territory. The person who was following you had another guy posted on top of the buildings to give them your location. You were alone. And for working with a team, you need to trust people. You had trust issues.
There was a small stairwell leading to the top of the building. You felt a rush of hope. You could still escape. You couldn't hear footsteps behind you. Did you outrun your chaser?
Quickly you stepped on the stairwell. But someone grabbed you by the waist and pulled you down. It was like ice cold water fell on you. You squirmed under the touch, trying your best to get away. The hold tightened, lifting you off the ground, your hood fell. You continued squirming. The only thing in your mind was putting as much distance as you could from that person.
You turned your head. The person holding you was a man, trying his best to hold you against your struggle. Noticing your discomfort, he dropped you. Relief filled you. There was no time for that. You turned around and punched the guy. Your fist hit something hard. You hoped it was his nose and not his chest. You weren't the best with physical combat.
Without debating where you had hit the guy, you ran again. You took as many turns as you could, hoping to lose the guy. But you were also further trapping yourself in a maze you couldn't get out of.
You could feel a slight pain in your limbs. But you didn't stop running. You were almost out of breath.
Mental note: Never get out of the house without a gun.
You had to think of a plan, but half of your attention was on your legs, making sure you didn't stop running. The other half was on the guy, calculating how much distance there was between the two of you.
Unfortunately, the guy caught up with you. He grabbed your wrist and slammed you against the nearest wall. The stones dug in your back. He was standing too close to you. Your heartbeats speed up. You felt restless. You tried taking deep breaths to calm yourself down, but it wasn't working.
The guy was towering over you. The light cast a shadow over his well-defined features.
You had to tiptoe to see over his shoulder. But the guy wasn't going to let you as much as move an inch. He pushed you down so your feet were planted firmly on the ground.
He leaned down. His hair was tickling your ear. You could tell the man was tall, but you yourself were too short. His hands were on your arms, pushing you backwards into the wall. The uneven stones were digging in your back. You tried to move to a more comfortable position, but the guy's hands were locking you in place. His movements were, surprisingly, gentle.
You were trapped. If you kicked the man, he could let you go. As though he read your mind, he pushed his knee between your legs. You tried to think of something else, but you couldn't. There was almost no space between the two of you.
"Kim Yeona." He whispered in a husky voice.
You freeze.
