The sun beamed over the little meadow. The luscious green grass was freshly cut. The smell of wet mud floating in the air. Birds merrily chirped in the tall trees as they bathe in the sun's rays. Fresh, soft leaves danced in the gentle breeze.

Night was lying in the grass, not caring if it was wet. Her hair flowed around her like a fast-flowing stream. She looked up at the sky. It was painted with a beautiful shade of blue, and the fluffy white clouds drawn over it completed the masterpiece.

She lazily closed her eyes, feeling the sun's rays fall on her. She smiled when she heard the birds sing, as they always did in early spring. It was too good of a day to worry.

"Up!" Someone shooed Night.

Night frowned and rolled over her side. Stephanie was looming on top of her, waiting for her to stand up. Stephanie's long dark hair covered her emotionless face. Night knew better than to cross her when she was in those moods. She slowly got up, not breaking eye contact with Stephanie as she did so.

"Why?" Night questioned.

"We have to train." Stephanie said, her voice firm like steel.

"But you said I can take a break today." Night protested.

Stephanie wasn't being fair. She had allowed Night to take a break after a long time. Night had been training from dawn till dusk every day, and today she had planned on doing nothing. The plan was going very well until Stephanie interrupted it.

"Break's over." She said with the same firmness.

Night pouted. She deserved a break. All the training was taking a toll on her life. "No!"

"Yes!"

Night stuck her tongue out at the older woman, irritating her even more. She took a step forward, closing the distance between the two of them.

"We are going to train now! Get your sword."

"I don't want to train. You said I could take a break today."

"I know what I said-"

"Then stand by it." Night said, stubbornly. She had no idea why Stephanie was being so persistent, but she was in no mood for training.

"Look," Stephanie sighed, pinching the bridge of her long nose. "Train with me today and take a break for the next two days."

Night pursed her lips, thinking. She had already wasted half of the day, and getting a break for two more days was appealing enough for Night to accept. She nodded.

"Good." Stephanie smiled. "Get ready, I'll be back in sometime."

"Where are you going?" Night asked out of curiosity before she could stop herself.

Stephanie turned around and Night realised her mistake. Stephanie's face was grim again. "Get yourself ready. You will get to know when I'm back." She said coldly.

Night sighed when Stephanie had left. She shouldn't have asked, but it was natural for someone to be curious. Stephanie never gave her a straight answer. She always brushed off Night's questions.

Every time Stephanie said get ready, Night didn't know what to do. This time, she picked up a stone and aimed it at the nearest tree in hopes that the birds sitting on the branches would fly away. To her disappointment, her stone flew past the tree.

Stephanie came back with a gigantic object.

Night didn't know how to describe it. It was a huge column, and it was brighter than the sun without reflecting any sunlight. It was perfect for blinding a person.

"Uh, what is that?" Night asked.

Stephanie ignored her question. "Using your powers, you have to destroy this thing. But remember, you get only one chance. If you don't destroy it, you will get a punishment."

Night eyed the thing she had to destroy strangely. It was huge. It was going to take a long time to destroy that thing. She couldn't destroy it in one go, but she also didn't want to be punished. She hated Stephanie's punishments. The punishments usually included cooking every single meal for the whole week or cleaning the house for the whole month.

"So," She started, "you want me to destroy this gigantic column using my powers in one go?"

"Yes." she replied curtly.Get ready."

Night took a deep breath and brought her hands in front of her, her palms facing outward. Dark mist flowed freely out of her hands and hit the column.

She found it difficult to destroy it. She tried harder. The dark mist was being swallowed when it hit the surface of the column. It never happened before.

"What is happening, Stephanie?"

"I don't know, but don't stop."

Stephanie was examining the unanticipated phenomenon with great interest. She took a step forward. She was moving dangerously close to the dark mist.

"Stephanie, get away from here. It's dangerous." Night tried to warn her, but Stephanie moved forward, ignoring Night.

"Don't stop. This is not normal."

Stephanie's eyes were full of hunger, like she hadn't eaten in days. She crept forward, despite Night's protests. Then she was close enough to touch it.

Night was trying her best to destroy the column. She knew Stephanie would be mad if she didn't. She was desperately warning Stephanie from going near the column, but Stephanie was turning a deaf ear to her words.

She started experiencing shortness of breaths. Destroying the column was taking a lot of her energy. She tried her best to destroy it, but it wasn't enough. The column was nearly unbreakable.

The column finally exploded, vaporising in thin air. Night stopped, exhausted. She looked around for Stephanie, but she was nowhere to be seen. She had disappeared from sight, gone. Night was never going to see her again.

Night could feel tears prick her eyes. She took a deep breath as her tears spilled down her cheeks. Every tear was poison, burning her cheeks before falling on the ground where it neutralized with the soil.

Stephanie was the only anchor she held on to. She cried bitterly. If she had stopped using her powers, it wouldn't have happened. Why did she worry about Stephanie being mad? If she hadn't, Stephanie would have still been alive. It was her fault Stephanie was gone.

She sobbed harder. She was alone, in a world too big for her. She didn't know what to do next. Her life felt very meaningless at the moment.

When Stephanie was alive, she used to say, when Night had mastered her powers, they would find other Phenomenals and save Eroth from the monsters and restore peace on the planet.

She wasn't interested in saving Eroth from the monsters now. Stephanie wanted to do that, not Night. The planet could explode into a thousand pieces and drift away in the cosmos, and Night still wouldn't care.

"Don't think that Night," Vague said. "It's your legacy to save Eroth from the horrors that prevail on it today."

"I will only hurt people using my powers. Stephanie died because of it."

"Night that wasn't your fault." Vague said.

"Oh, yeah? How do you know?"

"Listen to me-"

"Listen to you? I just did what Stephanie told me to do. Didn't turn out so well, did it?" She snapped back. Her anger knew no bounds. It was burning inside her like a wildfire. Nothing but time had the power to extinguish it.

"No, that's not what- I couldn't do anything."

"Isn't it your job to make sure this doesn't happen?"

"It's not my job to do anything about Stephanie."

"You're supposed to make sure I can control my powers!"

"You can't blame this on you! That was Stephanie's stupidity."

"Shut up!"

"You know that's the truth. Stop denying it."

"Go away!"

"Ok."

She lost two people important to her that day. Even though Vague wasn't a person, Night could still feel the absence. Once Night calmed down, she regretted every single word of the last conversation she had with Vague.

She looked around her. Everything was full of life and hope. It didn't please her anymore. She wanted the world to burn, to understand her pain. She wanted to scream. She opened her mouth, but no sound came out.
