"Jiwon-ah! Wait for me!"
"Hah, stay back you loser!! I'm getting there first!"
"You're so mean! Let's go together!"
"Just admit you're scared of ghosts Junie."
"I-i'm not o-okay?"
Jiwon and Yeonjun were in an old, abandoned building, exploring the place out of curiosity. They had heard whispers and rumors of the building being haunted, and since neither of them were afraid of ghosts (Yeonjun was, and he was too proud to admit it), they decided to check it out.
As they walked through the dimly lit corridors, Jiwon teased Yeonjun, calling him a loser and challenging him to a race to the next room.
"Just admit you're scared of ghosts," Jiwon said, grinning. "I-i'm not!" He protested, his voice quavering just a bit.
Jiwon laughed, "you sure about that? Your voice is shaking, Junie."
"I-i'm just a little cold, that's all!" He tried to play it cool, but his eyes kept darting around nervously, expecting a ghost to pop out from the shadows at any moment.
They continued deeper into the building, following the sounds of creaking floorboards and the occasional scratching noise. The atmosphere was thick with tension, and Yeonjun was starting to feel more and more uneasy.
"Let's go back," he said, his voice hardly above a whisper. "I think we've explored enough."
Jiwon chuckled, rolling her eyes at Jun's suggestion. "Oh, come on, don't be a baby, Junie. The ghosts are probably more scared of us than we are of them."
Yeonjun gulped, his hands clenched into fists as they continued down the darkened hallway. Suddenly, there was a loud crash, and Yeonjun jumped, letting out a shrill scream that echoed through the eerie building. Jiwon burst out laughing, unable to contain her amusement at the younger boy's frightened reaction.
She laughed, while he cried.
That's how they were. Childhood besties, two peas in a pod, attached to the hip, crime-partners.
They had been best friends since childhood, growing up in the same neighborhood and practically glued to each other's side, because they both came from the same economical background and their Dads were bestfriends as well.
They shared everything, from their favorite expensive games to their biggest dreams. Jiwon was the cheeky, mischievous one, always coaxing Yeonjun into doing foolish things, while Yeonjun was the more shy and cautious one, always following behind Jiwon, ready to clean up any mess she got them into. It was an unlikely pairing, yet it worked, and they were practically inseparable.
They stuck together through highschool and University both, passing the exam to get into Yonsei, fighting their parent's opinion on studying abroad, just so they could study together in the same university, refusing to get separated.
They knew their goal anyways, inheriting their parents respective companies.
"Congrats on Graduating, Old granpa."
"I'm just a year older for a reminder, and you too, Annoying pest."
Both of the bestfriends stood together for a Graduation picture, at 22 and 23; ready to face the real world...and the budding relationship between them, which both of them were painfully oblivious to.
It was going so smoothly, with Yeonjun preparing to take over Horizon tech after his father announced his retirement and plans to rest, while Jiwon ready to take her own place; rivaling with her step-brother Jihan, and needless to say, Yeonjun rooted for her to win her Grandfather's favour.
He knew how much she wanted to be in that position afterall. He knew it better that anyone, because he knew her, and loved her.
Yes. Yeonjun, had always been inlove with Jiwon, his childhood bestfriend. His first crush and first love was her and her only, and he planned to confess to her after he got the position as the CEO to his own company, and Jiwon got hers.
He had planned everything, and he was utterly overjoyed when Jiwon's Grandfather called him, for getting their Marriage planned.
Arranged marriages seem like a disaster to most, but for Yeonjun it was a dream come true. Marrying the love of his life? He was overjoyed for it, and he thought Jiwon felt the same; from her enthusiasm about it.
Their engagement ceremony went smoothly, with Yeonjun's family overjoyed and Jiwon's Grandfather elated over the moon.
He remembers the immense amount of happiness and joy he felt after slipping the ring on Jiwon's finger, promising for a future together.
He thought Jiwon and him would keep that beautiful promise, because their love was pure and true.
Or was it?
"Yeonjun, can we please talk in our spot? I have something important to tell you."
Yeonjun was prepared for absolutely anything. Anything but this.
"I'm breaking off our engagement Yeonjun. I never loved you, I'm sorry. I agreed for the marriage just so I could inherit the company position. Grandfather signed the papers, and now I don't need you anymore. You were too foolish to trust me."
That night, Yeonjun experienced his very first heartbreak and betrayal, by the person he loved and trusted the most.
He wanted to believe it was a sick joke, that Jiwon was pranking him and playing tricks on him, but he was pulled out of his delusion, when Jiwon slipped the ring off her finger, and threw it away with a careless look on her face, leaving him alone in the park.
The park which was their spot.
The park where he had first promised his first love that he would marry her.
And the park where his first love broke his heart, and he experienced the crulest heart-break of his life possible, changing his view on love and relationships forever.
"So I was a fool...she never loved me. I was a tool for her."
