A few screams were heard as people ducked out of the way of the falling torch. It lands on its side, and begins to roll away.

The netting containing the Deadly Nadders came loose, giving them time to wriggle out and take flight, the villagers watch in disbelief as the dragons fly away with their sheep.

...

Hiccup and (Y/N) watch the dragons leave with wide eyes, but cringed slightly once they noticed the amount of eyes glaring at the two.

"..okay but I hit a night fury." Hiccup speaks up, pointing to the woods. He yelps when his dad picks him up by his collar and begins to drag him away.

"I-it's not like the last few times, Dad! I really, actually hit it!" He tries to say, but his dad looks forward with annoyance.

"Just come check it out!" (Y/N) finally speaks, trying to keep up with the Chief's long strides.

"Their in the woods! I promise!" She pleads, grabbing hold of Stoick's arm and trying to pull him to the woods. The Chief doesn't say anything, just simply ignores the girl.

Gobber emerges from the crowd, watching the two teens try and reason with annoyed Chief with sympathy.

He feels a tap on his shoulder, turning around he's faced with a tall man, around the same height as him, if not taller. He had (H/C) hair, done in a messy fashion. His eyes were (E/C), slightly misty due to his age.

His attire was similar to the Chief's, the only difference was he didn't wear a cape, nor did he wear a helmet.

He wore a dark green shirt, tucked into black trousers, which were also neatly folded into two boots. A belt hung loosely against his waist, the same dragon symbol Stoick had resting in the center.

"Why if it isn't the commander!" Gobber calls with fake delight, a few people (including Stoick) turn to see the commotion.

"To what do we owe the pleasure?"

It was as clear as day that Gobber had grown a distaste towards the man. Maybe it was because Stoick, who Gobber considered his best friend, favored the tall man infront of him. Or maybe it was because he was better built than him.

..in all honesty, everyone thinks it's the second one..

"Just here to check on my daughter, Gobber." The man responds plainly, trying his best not to roll his eyes at the childish man infront of him.

He turned his attention towards the Chief, offering a small smile. "Chief Haddock." He nods, Stoick returning the action before taking a quick glance towards the fidgeting girl beside him. "Commander (L/N).."

"Heyyyy dad!" (Y/N) squirms under her fathers gaze, the man sighing before placing a gentle hand on her head, patting it gently before tugging her away from the Chief and towardsย  the crowd.

Hiccup watches the two blend in with the crowd before turning back to his father. "If we can just get a search party out there we can-!" He's cut off by his father.

"STOP!" Stoick yells, his voice echoing slightly. "Just stop.." he sighs, pinching the bridge of his nose.

"..every time you step outside, disaster follows, and you somehow manage to always drag (Y/N) into your messes!"

The last statement makes Hiccup flinch, he never meant to put (Y/N) in danger, it was just..better when she joined him.

(Y/N) watches the scene with sad eyes, she takes a step forward but a hand blocks her path. She looks to her left and finds Astrid Hofferson, a good friend of hers, standing there with an arm out.

She shakes her head, silently telling her not to do anything. (Y/N) sighs, her head hung low as she backs away.

"Cant you see I have bigger problems?! Winter is almost here and I have an entire village to feed!" Stoick speaks once more, his hands shaking.

Hiccup looks down with a slight grin. "Between you and me, the village could use a little less feeding..don't you think?" (Y/N) holds back a snort, shaking her head at her best friend.

She stops once her father looks down at her with a raised brow. Stoick curses under his breath, "This isn't a joke Hiccup!" He yells, his son flinching once more. "Why can't you follow the most simplest of orders?"

"I-I can't stop myself!" Hiccup defends, gesturing to himself. "I see a dragon and I just have to.." he pulls his hands into fists. "..kill it! You know?" He asks, looking up at his father with a hopeful look.

"It's who I am dad!" Stoick groans, setting a hand on his forehead. "You're many things, Hiccup. But a dragon killer..is not one of them." The boy sadly looks down with a scowl as Stoick continues. "Get back to the house.."

Gobber slowly walks forward, Stoick turning to him with a nod. "Make sure he gets there.." he orders, Gobber nodding in understanding. He brings his hand up and smacks Hiccup against the back of his head, the boy flinching harshly as he does so.

"I have this mess to clean up." The Chief makes his way towards the village but stops, turning towards (Y/N) and her father with a frown. "(Y/N)" he calls, the girl jerking her head up at the mention of her name.

"Yes?" She mumbles, her eyes steady. "You said there were two dragons?" He asks, (Y/N) nodding her head with a frown. "What did the other one look like?" Hiccup looks up with interests, almost everyone around them went silent, awaiting the girls answers

(Y/N) squints her eyes, she remembers the flat, spiked edge of the tail, the curved horns at the edge of the wings. She faintly remembers the roar, it was low, almost like a horn.

She nods her head, a faint picture coming to her. She remembers catching sight of its back as it turned, it seemed to have..fur? Stretching from the top of its head to the tip of its tail.

"...a Woolly Howl."

Stoick feels his breath hitch, a Woolly Howl and a Night Fury? Together? Impossible was the word for it. But the Chief said nothing more, he merely nodded, turned around and made his way through the village.

Slowly, the crowd starts to break, everyone turning to go back to work. Gobber guides him through the crowd, slowly making their way to Hiccup's house.

They pass a group of familiar kids, who all begin to snicker and point. "Quite the performance!" Tuffnut snorts, cackling away. "I've never seen anyone mess up that badly.
That helped!" Snotlout sarcastically says with a smile.

"Thank you, thank you. I was trying."Hiccup replies in a bored tone, sighing softly before glancing towards (Y/N).

The girl offers him a small smile, giving him a thumbs up before she's pulled away by Astrid. Hiccup watches longingly, watching them become smaller as they move away.

He bumps into someone, backing away and apologizing but stops. Infront if him was none other than Commander (L/N), aka (Y/N)'s dad...aka the second best Viking, besides Stoick, on the island.

"Oh hey t-there sir!" Hiccup greets nervously, the commander stares at him, his arms across his chest as he raises his eyebrow.

"I do not care whether or not you two shot down an actual Night Fury.." he begins, Hiccup flinching slightly at his firm tone. "What I do care about is that you keep dragging my daughter into your messes."

Hiccup opens his mouth to reply, he knew this day would come, the day when his best friends father finally realizes that he's a no-good outcast that almost got (Y/N) killed on several occasions.

The day where her father decided he's had enough and was going to forbid the two from ever seeing eachother again...at least that's what he thought.

"Just promise me you'll keep her safe."

The statement caught Hiccup off guard, that's not what he was expecting at all. Protect her? Please! (Y/N) had enough self confidence for the both of them, the commander shouldn't be asking him this!

He should be asking his daughter...asking her to continue to protect Hiccup that is.

"R-right! Of course sir!" Hiccup finally manages, nodding his head quickly with a goofy grin on his face.

"That's what I like to hear!" The commander laughs, patting Hiccup on the back, causing him to stumble a bit. He looks up at the man sheepishly, chuckling slightly.

"Right right! We get it!" Gobber snaps, his eye twitching as he glares at (Y/N)'s father. "Let's go Hiccup.." he grumbles, pushing Hiccup forward and away.

The boy complies, taking small steps towards his house, he got halfway before a voice called out to him. "Oh and Hiccup!" He turns, finding the commander a few feet infront of him.

"I'll let (Y/N) know to join you later, alright?" Hiccup beams at the man, thanking him before continuing on his path, Gobber rolls his eyes, following after the boy while mumbling.

"I'll let (Y/N) know to join you later, alriiighttt?" He mocks, his head moving from side to side. "What a stuck up, lousyโ€”!"

"..I can here you Gobber!"

"...I knew that!!"

...

"I really did hit one.." Hiccup mumbles for what was probably the hundredth time that day. Gobber walked a few steps behind him, nodding his head with a sigh. "Sure, Hiccup.."

The boy yells in frustration, throwing his hand sun the air. "(Y/N) was with me! You heard her! And yet my dad didn't even listen to her?!" Hiccup continues to yell. "He never listens!"

"..runs in the family." Gobber says plainly, shrugging his shoulders as he walks past the boy. Hiccup ignores him and continues.

"And when he does it's with this...disappointed scowl, like someone skimped on the meat in his sandwhich," he rolls his eyes, making his voice gruff like his father's.

"Excuse my barmaid! I think you've brought me the wrong offspring! I ordered and extra-large boy with beefy arms, extra guts and glory on the side!"

He waves his arms, gesturing around with a frown. "This here..this is a talking fishbone!"

Gobber sighs, shaking his head. "Now, you're thinking about this all wrong. It's not so much what you look like, it's what's inside that he can't stand." He not so really comforts.

Hiccup rolls his eyes and stops infront of his house. "Thank you..for summing that up."

"Look the point is..stop trying so hard to be something your not.." Gobber tries again, but Hiccup ignores the statement.

"I just want to be like all of you!" He admits, his arms waving in the air. He stomps into his house, and slams the door shut.

Gobber sighs, shaking his head as he turn and walks down the hill. What he didn't know was that there was a pair of eyes watching him intently.

(Y/N) makes her way out of the bush and sprints towards Hiccups house, a small satchel swinging from her shoulder.

...

She makes her way around the house and towards the back, and waits by the back door. After a few minutes, she hears the door open and watches as her best friend stumbles out.

"(Y/N)!" Hiccup says, surprised, he thought they were going to meet by her house, but obviously she had different plans.

"My dad thought it'd save you the trouble if I just came here." She says simply, shrugging her shoulders and continuing to make her way towards the woods. Hiccup nods numbly, watching her walk away with a small smile on her face.

"Let's go stick!" She calls, already past the tree line. Hiccup rushes to her side, a small book and pencil by his side. "I'm coming, I'm coming!"

...

Back with the village, all the Vikings joined in the mess hall. Stoick stood at the front, giving a speech, Gobber on his right while (F/N) stood to his left.

"Either we finish them or they'll finish us!" He states, slamming his hands on the table. "It's the only way we'll be rid of them!"

He looks over the map, (F/N) stepping forward and continuing. "If we find the nest and destroy it the dragons will leave." He places his hand on the table, grabbing a dagger.

"They'll find another home!" He stabs it through a picture of a dragon, the crowd cheering as he does so. Gobber rolls his eyes at the man, shifting from his peg leg to his real one.

"One more search, before the ice sets in.."

"Those ships never come back!" Someone yells, others mumbling in agreement. "(Y/N) lost her mother because of this!" Another joins in, the hall going silent at the statement.

(F/N) flinches at the mention of his late wife. Stoick looks to his friend, a sad look adorning his face.

"Because we are Vikings!" He bellows, the attention now shifted on him, (F/N) takes a step back, breathing deeply to try and compose himself.

Gobber looks to the commander with sympathy, sure he might dislike the guy, but that didn't mean he couldn't shove those feelings down when it came to the man's dead wife.

"It's an occupational hazard! Now whose with me?!" Stoick yells, he receives no response, only a couple murmurs and a few faces turning away. "All right.." he says, "..those who stay will look after Hiccup." He states plainly.

Everyone suddenly yells, rising from their seats and joining the Chief, suddenly very eager to join the journey. "I'm with you!" Snotlouts dad yells, his fist raised. Stoick nods, a small grin on his face. "That's more like it.."

"Right!" Gobber speaks up, walking towards his friend, "I'll get me undies!" Stoick shakes his head, turning towards Gobber with a stern face.

"No, I need you to stay and train some new recruits." He states, making Gobber sigh. "Whose gonna-" he trails off, his attention now shifted towards the commander who was in deep conversation with the Hoffersons. "..oh" Gobber sighs, looking down.

Stoick looks to his friend with a frown, "You know.." he starts, Gobber looking to him with a raised brow. "I could go for a few rounds of rum before we set off." He says softly, a smile on his face.

"You joining?" Gobber beams, slinging his good arm over the chiefs neck and laughing. "How could I say no?!" They both bellow a laugh, some heads turning to their direction and smiling.

(F/N) looks towards them and smiles softly, he knew how much Gobber despised him. (He didn't know why but he never bothered to ask) But he was glad to know that the relationship between the Chief and his childhood friend was still strong.

He catches Gobbers eye and smiles, the one legged man glaring before turning away.

Gobber sighs, turning to his friend with a teasing smile. "While I'm busy training, Hiccup can cover the stall by himself!" Stoicks looks at him with a raised brow, sitting down with a grunt.

"Molten steel, razor-sharp blades, lots of time to himself. What could possibly go wrong?" He sarcastically questions as the Chief sighs.

"What am I going to do with him, Gobber?" The man pauses, looking to his friend before sighing. "Put him in training with the others.." he suggests. "He'd probably love it since (Y/N) would be there."

"No, I'm serious." Stoick grumbles, "So am I!"

"He'd be killed before the first dragon is out of its cage." Stoick disagrees, making Gobber roll his eyes. "Oh, ya don't know that." "I do know, actually," Stoick retorts.

"No, you actually don't."

"No, I do."

"No, you don't!" Gobber firmly says, Stoick sighing as he rises. "You know what he's like.." the Chief begins, "From the time he could crawl he's been..different. He doesn't listen, he has the attention span of a sparrow. I take him fishing and he goes hunting for...for trolls!"

"Trolls exist!" Gobber yells, pointing with his bad arm. "They steal your socks, but only the left ones...what's with that?" Stoick ignores him, his hand pulled to his chest as he begins to speak. "When I was a boy.."

"...oh here we go."

"My father told me to bang my head against a rock. And I did it!" Stoick continues, Gobber half-listening. "I thought it was crazy, but I didn't question him. And you know what happened?"

"You got a headache.." Gobber sarcastically replies, Stoick ignoring him. "That rock split in two." he answers, pacing. "It taught me what a Viking could do, Gobber." He clenches his fists with a grin.

"He could crush mountains.." he waves his hand horizontally. "..level forests.."he brings his fist down, clenching it again, "Tame seas!"

His smile falls as he sighs, walking back to Gobber. "Even as a boy, I knew what I was, what I had to become." he sits down, shaking his head.

"Hiccup, is not that boy.." Gobber looks to his friend, a frown on his face. "You can't stop him, Stoick. You can only prepare him." The Chief looks up, his friends words replaying in his head.

He doesn't say anything, causing Gobber to sigh, "I know it seems hopeless, but the truth is you won't always be around to protect him, he's going to get out there again. He's probably out there right now, (Y/N) with him to make sure he doesn't get hurt!" Stoick sighs with a faint smile, nodding to his friend.

"Right!" Gobber speaks up, getting up and tugging his friend by the collar. "Now let's go get a pint!" Stoick laughs, getting up and following after him.

Maybe Gobber was right..maybe he could have a little more faith in his son.
