11. Tired
Bonnie was like your anchor to the ground. He kept you from fading back into your thoughts, though he voiced many of them. Mainly about the adults night, to your relief. He didn't press about Monty - you guessed he had the sense it was private. And he was right. Even though Monty had told you about what was going on with him out right, and you hadn't forced him to do so, you still felt like you'd invaded his privacy and it wasn't something you were supposed to know. It still baffled you that he had the courage to tell you something like that. He was a hell of a lot braver than you were.
"The best thing about the adult night is that those demon-gremlin hybrids won't be running around our feet as per usual," You said, refusing to say 'children' - it made those creatures sound dainty and tame.
You'd taking to bullying toddlers (not something you were proud of as a young adult) instead of talking about anything serious. Working out the specifics of your late-night fundraiser with Bonnie wasn't something you were really up for, but Bonnie definitely seemed to be. He wasn't tired at all - constantly, you forgot that Bonnie was a animatronic and the closest thing to 'sleep' or 'fatigue' was low battery.
"You know, Y/N, kids aren't as bad as say they are." Bonnie said, "sure, they can be a little noisy and can climb on your back and stick used gum in your ears," You could practically see the war-like flashbacks in Bonnie's eyes, " but I'm sure you'll get used to them. You used to be one, you know?" It was weird how Bonnie actually liked children. Maybe it was just his programming.
You huffed and crossed your arms over you chest, "Of course I know that - I never said that I wasn't one of those screaming monsters myself. I just grew out of it."
"Sure you did, Y/N. You might have grown up mentally, but physically..." You looked mockingly down at you, "It's not the case."
You gaped at him. Had he just insulted your height? Okay, so maybe you were a little short, and even shorter beside an animatronic. Just a little. You desperately wanted to slap Bonnie on the arm, but, after already trying it before and only hurting yourself in the process, you instead sent him a look of compete and utter fury. Bonnie smiled and laughed.
Rolling your eyes, you quickly checked your watch. It was almost midnight. It was becoming more of a struggle to keep yours eyes open.
"On the topic of kids..." Bonnie tilted his head, one brow raised, "will you ever have kids of your own?"
The way Bonnie said it made you think it had been a light-hearted question. But this was not something you wanted to answer - especially when Morgan was still lingering in your mind. Admittedly, you had wanted children when you were younger. You'd... liked the idea of having a kid. In fact, you'd been so good with kids that you'd worked at a daycare, a long time ago.
You had wanted kids with Morgan.
He didn't - and maybe that had been the start of your hatred for anything human-like that crawled on the ground.
You swallowed, a weighty blanket of sadness pooling over you. 'No' was all you managed to say.
"Should have guessed. But, um- what if your partner wants kids? Random question." Again, Bonnie said it in a very 'just making small talk' type way, like it wasn't important, but he seemed to be giving you his full attention; even if he wasn't meeting your eye.
You wiped your hands on your shorts - they were still sweaty from when you'd been meeting with Monty. Why were you sad about this topic? You just didn't want kids. Simple. If your partner wanted kids, they wanted kids. Simple. You'd have to work out a compromise. A compromise that you and Morgan had never really been able to do, even though you had tried and tried again.
You were tempted to not reply, but the silence was a little too loud and Bonnie was probably expecting an answer from you. So, with a soft exhale, you willed yourself to speak.
"Uhhhh..." You stalled, trying to think of what to say. Your mind always went blank at the absolute worst times, you'd come to realize: on that spelling bee in preschool, your assembly speech in Intermediate and in almost all of your exams. And the snail-pace your thoughts were going at was not helping at all. Wasn't your brain just wonderful?
"The thing is...." You risked a glance at Bonnie. His ears were pricked and his eyes were bright; okay, he was definitely paying attention.
You sighed and tapped your hands on the small wooden bench you were sitting on.
"The thing is it wouldn't matter cause I'm not interested in a relationship."
"You're not interested in a relationship with someone who wants kids?"
"I'm not interested in any romantic relationship."
"...oh."
There was a heavy silence all throughout the Pizza Plex, like some force was slowly crushing the air inside of it. You tugged at your uniform vest, watching Bonnie just out the corner of your eye. He was staring down at the floor, his elbows resting on his knees and his hands propping up his chin. You knew what he was doing - though you didn't know why - he was doing one of his 'resets', where he quickly collected his emotions or natural reaction, stuffed it away and switched to his kid-friendly self. But this time, he didn't 'switch'. He wouldn't need to adjust his personality anyway - there were no kids around to interact with. That was... weird. Maybe it was a glitch? You bit down on your tongue - you'd almost asked if Bonnie needed to go see the mechanic, but god that was the last thing you needed today.
Bonnie eventually stood up, stretched (which you didn't even know animatronics did), and twisted one of the rings on his fingers.
"So, about this fundraiser..." You were grateful that Bonnie had changed the topic, and let Bonnie know with a soft blink of your eyes. He held out his hand. Of course, you took it.
"While you are here, I wanted to show the room that we could hold the event." You nodded, trying hard to chase the tiredness from your eyes as you let Bonnie guide you. His grip on your hand was tense - well, not tense, but not relaxed, either. So was his tone. It was like he wasn't sure if he was doing the right thing, which was really strange because this whole hand-in-hand thing was something you and Bonnie did a lot, and after all this time, surely Bonnie would feel comfortable talking to you. Maybe, in weariness, your mind was playing tricks on you.
"M'kay" You said. With your eyes half closed, the world around you was a blur of fluorescent blue and pink and yellow and green lights against black. You liked how everything became a simple, yet complicated bling of brightness and darkness, and the detailed shapes and colors became easy to process. It was kind of calming.
You fought to stay awake as you strolled at Bonnie's side. You recognized where Bonnie was taking you - it was towards the left side of the Pizza Plex, further to the back. This was one of the places you had frequently visited during your janitor years; it was notorious for spilled drinks and fries squished between the gutters. You'd always wondered who came to the Pizza Plex every day just to fit individual fries into the small holes dotting the gutter guards. You'd never found out who it was, and you still wondered about it to this day.
Finally, Bonnie stopped outside one of the doors. You flopped into his side - your mind was slowly shutting down, despite your best efforts.
"Tired, huh?" Through your half open eyes, you could make out Bonnie's face in front of yours. A soft smile played on his lips, and he brushed his hand over your cheek, letting you rest your head in his palm. His fingers tangled through your hair, and your ears burned. Bonnie's metal was heating up, too.
Sighing through his smile, Bonnie lead you into the room and set you down on one of the few chairs that were littered around the room. The room was big. Tall and echo-y. It was bare apart from the few chairs that littered it, but not so bare that it didn't have one of the mandatory Pizza Plex stages at the front. The wallpaper was faded, and the floor was a little dusty, and one of the stage lights were broken, but other than that, it was perfect. With a lot of strength, a sleepy grin formed on your face.
"Isn't it wonderful?" Bonnie gushed, spinning around. His eyes were practically sparkling, and he was beaming, and he looked so happy. With a gentle laugh, he twirled to a stop, but continued to smiling. A delighted blush settled on his cheeks, and he placed his hands on his hips. His nose twitched adorably as he looked around him.
Somehow, you found your face burning with an emotion you couldn't exactly describe.
Maybe you were just really, really tired.
Bonnie's gaze finally found yours. A bittersweet, almost wistful, almost sad gleam took over his features, and he tipped his head to one side, taking one step towards you.
"Do you like it, Y/N?"
"Yes, of course I do. It's... so much better than I thought it would be." Your words were becoming slurred.
"Will you go home tonight?"
"I... I don't think I could leave, even if I wanted to. I'm too tired."
"Alright then. Well, goodnight, Y/N."
"'night."
"Are you going to tell me what happened with Monty? You don't have to."
Your answer was a unintelligible muddle of sound.
Bonnie chuckled.
"Sweet dreams, Y/N."
