10. Montgomery Gator
Gater Golf had never been your favorite one of the Pizza Plex attractions. Now knowing that Monty was waiting for you inside made it a million times worse.
It wasn't at all exciting to revisit the same breezy hallways that you used to sweep every night. Now that you'd grown used to the loud noises if the dayshift, you'd been wishing less and less to go bo ack to being a janitor. Infact, you could even say you preferred working at Bonnie Bowl now. A few days ago, that would have been a lie. And maybe the only reason you'd actually started to enjoy your shifts was because Bonnie was there. But even so, your were proud of yourself - for some absurb reason.
Bonnie had put on one of his brilliant shows again. Today it had been simple, a gentle peice. But even so, the talent had been there and you'd been able to sneak away from the ice cream parlor and watch. Just seeing his fingers move over the guitar was... amazing to watch. You'd never really been into music (although at some point, you had played a musical instrument), but listening to Bonnie play was definitely sparking up your interest again. Buying a pair of earbuds was the first thing to do when you got home.
All day, your mind hadn't switched off. From Morgan to the adults night, there had been so much to think about that keeping your thoughts at bay had been near impossible. But somehow, with a lot of work, you'd been able to focus on one thing at a time. And that one thing had been Monty.
Keeping your cool while walking closer and closer to Monty and not running away was hard. Going there by yourself made it even harder. The only comfort you had was the fact that you could go to Bonnie at any time and the few security guards that were roaming around could come save you. Maybe. You took a deep breath and curled your hands into fists, continuing towards your inevitable doom.
"So. Monty wants to talk to me. No big deal!" The echo of your own voice around you was almost to much to bear. Why couldn't you be back with Bonnie, discussing plans for the adult night? That had been your plan for the morning until Madison called. And that had been your plan for after hours, too, but here you were. Almost there.
You swallowed down hard and continued to match inside. The blaring green lights glared into your back. Around you were golf sticks packed neatly into bags and flags marking holes and posters hung up on every surface with enough room for one. Monty was no where in sight - for now. If you knew anything about animatronics, it was that they knew how to make you look for them.
"H-hey Monty!" You needed to play this off cool. Make it looked like you weren't about to piss yourself.
"It's me, Y/N! You asked to see me? Pity that you didn't have to courage to tell me that yourself." Maybe saying that kind of stuff wasn't the best idea. You could easily see Monty snapping you in two.
That's when he finally made his appearance.
Monty strolled out from seemingly nowhere, a silver golf stick slung oer his shoulder and his mohawk dripping over the side of his face. You started in suprise, having to bite back a squeak. Gladly, Monty didn't seem to be in the mood to pin you up against the wall like he had been last time. He seemed... kind of tame. It was weird to say that about an anyone, let alone a animatronic, but you didn't know how else to describe it.
"Hey, Y/N." The same words Monty had uttered the first time he saw you. An unsettling chill crawled down your spine.
"Aaayye!" You managed to force out, giving him some lame finger-guns, "Wassup!" All you could do was laugh nervously and bounce on the tip of your toes as Monty edged closer. Keeping Monty one meter away from you at all times was absolutely nessisary.
Monty frowned, grabbing two seats and setting them (thankfully) just far enough apart that you were comfortable. He sat down. So did you, eventually, with a lot of internal conflict.
"So..." he scratched the back of his head, looking pointedly away from you, "er... I don't know how to say this. But... look, for lack of any better word, what I did was shitty. Really, really stupid. Like, idiotically, incomprehensibly stupid. I mean, if some stranger just came up to me and did that, I would punch them in the face." He winced, "thanks for not doing that."
You were silent. Even if you wanted to accept his apology...
"I don't know if I can forgive you so easily."
Monty nodded, unfazed. He'd obviously been expecting that. "I get it. That's totally fair." He sighed, "I can't ever say it was justified, what I did, but if I could I would love to explain myself."
Without hesitation, you agreed. How could you not? You needed to know why he had done that. And you were incredibly curious - maybe it could explain the other strange behaviors Bonnie had been telling you about.
Monty shifted in his chair and didn't speak for a moment. He was hesitant. But you didn't blame him - he didn't know you well at all, and was probably going to tell you something personal.
"Take your time." You said. Monty did.
But finally, with a sigh of 'why am I doing this', he looked up from the floor and made direct eye contact with you. His red eyes burned into yours.
"I was in love with Freddy."
So that was not what you had been expecting.
"And I still am." Monty clenched his jaw, "I have been for a while. Not only had I never... felt for anyone like that before, but it was another guy. I mean, I had never expected to find myself in that situation. Freddy was supposed to be my best friend, not my crush." And that was when your heart melted, just a little. Monty was... in love?
"So battling with that whole realization was tough. I... I felt like I couldn't tell anyone. Which was another stupid thing I did. And just knowing that..." Monty was quiet for another while. The soft whirring of the Gater Golf fans buzzed around you, filling the silence.
Monty swallowed, "I can't be with Freddy. I just can't. He doesn't love me back. And he won't. Not ever. There's just no way it can work. And-" Monty clasped his hands tightly together. The way he held back his emotions from his voice was astounding. "and it teared me up on the inside. Even just seeing him began to be painful. I hated him and loved him at the same time and all of it together was awful. I thought the only way I could get over Freddy was... well, doing what I did - whether it was male, female or anyone inbetween didn't matter, as long as it wasn't that stupid bear..."
Monty rested his head in the palms of his hands, his claws framing his face. This was all a lot to take in. You didn't know how to react. What to say. So you kind of just sat, staring at him. He looked almost heartbroken, and somehow, you felt guilty.
"I..." You sighed, scuffing your feet on the floor, "I don't know how you had the courage to tell me that."
Monty scoffed, "I almost didn't. It was the new employee that convinced me too - the mechanic, Morgan. He's... he's something else."
Ice stabbed through your heart.
Morgan?
"Did his last name happen to be Briggs, by any chance?" A cold sweat dripped down your body. Morgan couldn't be working here. He just couldn't. There was no way.
Monty looked at you thoughtfully. "That is his last name. Do you know him?"
The world around you seemed to spin. You stood up, almost stumbled over yourself, your hands shaking.
"I have to leave." You mumbled, not waiting for a reply as you dashed out of Gater Golf, the pounding of your shoes on the tiles sounding through the Pizza Plex. You had to get away. You didn't want to leave Monty behind, with no answer or anything, but you couldn't stay if there was a chance that Morgan was around. You had to get to Bonnie.
Maybe Monty's heart had been broken like Morgan broke yours.
The Pizza Plex was dark, shadows so black you couldn't melt into them without a trace. The only thing to battle them were the lights that hung up in the ceiling, and not even they did much. You couldn't even make out any of the security guards in the gloom. But at least that meant that they couldn't see you.
You had been right. Morgan was coming back into your life. Maybe that's what he had called you about - to let you know he would be working here. But that was irrelevant. First thing tomorrow, you were getting Olive to fire him, and that was that.
Finally, you made it to the Bowling Alley, the crisp air raking against your lungs as you tried to gulp some down. You quickly spotted Bonnie; he was twirling one of the bowling balls on one finger, checking the clock every so often with an anxious expression.
"Bonnie." His ears pricked up and he immediately turned to you, his eyes glazed with worry.
"Are you okay?" He asked, quickly walking to your side and grabbing your hand, "fuck - did Monty do something to you? I will murder that guy-"
You tanged your fingers between Bonnie's. "No! Monty was fine. Great, actually. Like a different person." Bonnie's furrowed brow loosened, and he sighed.
"Then...?"
You gazed down at your shoes. You'd always thought that if Morgan had came back, you'd be ready for him. But obviously not. You had thought that after all the times you'd tried over him, you'd be stronger, but that was stupid. That was not how the world worked.
You chewed your lip. Just like you'd thought you'd gotten over Morgan, you'd also thought you'd made the choice to tell Bonnie about him. But now that you were here, you weren't so sure you would. Yes, the fact that he was now working here with you was incredibly anxiety-enducing and even knowing he was here made you want to dig a hole in the ground and stay there forever, but... Morgan was a mechanic. That meant he must be repairing Bonnie as well. If Bonnie found out about what Morgan had done, well... you didn't want Bonnie to say anything or do anything that might make Morgan dislike him. If Bonnie mentioned you to Morgan, maybe he wouldn't give Bonnie the same treatment as all the other animatronics, and then maybe he would break or malfunction, then get decomissioned, and then you could loose him.
Maybe you were making this all about yourself. Maybe nothing would happen if you told Bonnie about Morgan, and maybe your ex wouldn't care if you worked for Bonnie and you were just being self-absorbed.
Monty had been able to tell you about his problems. Surely you could tell Bonnie about yours.
But... maybe not. Not before things got worse.
"Don't worry about it." You finally said, exhaling and leaning into Bonnie's chest, "I'm alright." Bonnie gently let his shoulders relax, but still held your hand tight.
"You can tell me if anything happens. I want you to know that." Bonnie's voice was slightly muffled in your hair. You closed your eyes. A wave of guilt smashed into you.
All you said was; "Same goes for you." You and Bonnie stood there for a while.
You liked Bonnie. You liked Bonnie a lot. You only wished that you could keep your mind in the moment, just you two together, but it continued to drift off as the events of the day caught up to you.
If only you could stay a while and sort your thoughts out.
Bonnie seemed to read your mind. "Stay as long as you want."
You smiled into Bonnie metal, and despite your anguished mind you blushed, just a little.
"I'd like that."
