Maybe one day.....

George woke up in the middle of the night. He stared at the ceiling a couple of seconds before he realized his phone was going off, that's what woke him up. Hazel🀍 the called ID said.

It has been a couple of weeks and George had kept his word. He can't even begin to count the amount of times his finger hovered over the call button, desperate to hear her voice. Or how often he drove past her apartment complex, debating on whether to visit her or not, but George kept his word and did neither of those things.

So Hazel calling him in the middle of the night caught him by surprise to say the least. "Hazel", he mumbled sleepily. "I'm so sorry", she said softly. He could hear she had been crying. "Are you okay?". A muffled sob sounded on the other side of the line. George sat straight up in his bed. "Do you need me to come over?". Suddenly he was wide awake. "Please", she whispered. "I'm on my way", he said before jumping out of his bed. George couldn't remember the last time he got ready that quick. Within ten minutes he had gotten dressed, ran down the stairs of his apartment building and got into his car.

It was a twenty-five minute drive to Hazel's apartment, but George drove it in fifteen. He impatiently hopped from one foot to the other, waiting for Hazel to open the door. "Hey are you alright?", he asked as soon as she opened the door. She quietly stepped aside to let him in. "I'm sorry, I didn't know who else to call", Hazel sighed as she sat down at the kitchen table. But she knew, she knew exactly who she wanted to call but knew she shouldn't so she called George instead. "Don't worry about it", he reassured her as he poured the both of them a cup of tea.

Seeing the tears streaming down her face again as he turned around made his heart shatter into a million pieces. He couldn't stand seeing her like this, so much pain, it hurt him. Mostly because he knew he couldn't take that pain away, not even a little bit. No matter how hard he would try. George put the cups down on the table and sat down next to her, gently wiping the tears from her face. "hey, hey, it's alright, I'm here now". He wrapped his arms around her tightly, held her close to his chest as she cried. He knew this wasn't the right moment but he couldn't help but feel some sort of happiness wash over him. The love of his life called him, needed him, clung ontoΒ  the soft material of his hoodie right now. It made him feel... useful? A spark of hope lit up deep inside of him. Maybe this was all going better than they had anticipated at first. Maybe she wouldn't need as much time as she initially told him.

George felt like he was floating, his imagination was messing with him, making him forget about the reality of it all. But at this point he was flying too high to land his feet back onto the ground. His imagination was his reality right now. "I got you", he whispered into her ear. His hand stroking her hair, it calmed her down. Hazel was struggling with the same issue as George was right now. Her imagination was her reality. Just for a split second she believed it wasΒ  Lando who was holding her. Not that Lando and George were anything alike but she was so desperate for it to be Lando that her mind tricked her into thinking it was. Only for a little while though, as soon as Hazel recognized George's voice whispering softly in her ear she was brought back to reality. The harsh reality that she and Lando were over, that Lando would never hold her anymore, that she and Lando weren't soulmates. It was a reality Hazel didn't want to live in.

"I'm sorry", she said softly as she tried to free herself from his tight embrace. She shouldn't have called him, she wasn't thinking straight. "No no it's okay", he answered her, trying to pull her close to him again. Suddenly she felt like she couldn't breath anymore, like George's embrace was suffocating her. Hazel pushed George away, a little harder than intended. "I- I'm sorry, I didn't mean to-", she mumbled slightly embarrassed. "Stop apologising Hazel, it's okay", George smiled at her and she didn't quite understand why he was just putting up with her shit. "I- I need some air". George gestured towards the balcony "Let's go then".

They sat down on her balcony in silence and stared into the distance. "It is harder than I expected it to be", Hazel admitted after a while. "You really loved him, didn't you?". He looked at her sideways. She nodded in response. "I still do", she mumbled quietly. Hazel knew those weren't the words George wanted to hear but she had to be honest with him. "I know", he sighed. He honestly didn't know what was going on in his mind when he thought this was gonna be an easy one. "Have you talked to him at all?". Hazel shook her head. "I really wanted to, I've been so close to calling him so many times but I know I shouldn't". George knew all to well how that felt. "It will get easier". "I really hope you're right because this fucking sucks". George reached for her hand and squeezed it gently. "I know I'm right". "Oh is that so?", Hazel scoffed jokingly. George nodded sassy. "And how is that?". "Because I am always right, duh", he stated as if it was the most obvious thing in the world, making Hazel laugh softly.

"I'm so sorry for waking you up", Hazel apologized once again after it had been quiet for a while. The sun was starting to make it's first appearance of the day. Her hand was still in his, his thumb drawing circles on her skin. "It's alright Haze. I'm glad you felt like you could call me. Cause you can, anytime". She looked down at their intertwined fingers, biting the inside of her cheek a little. "No it's not alright George". A sudden cold took over George's body as she pulled her hand back. "What do you mean?". Hazel exhaled sharply, her lips trembling as she did so. "It's just..." "Just what?". She knew she made a mistake by calling George, she knew she would have to break his heart again. She knew what he wanted from her and she just wasn't ready to give him that. "I just don't want to get your hopes up George".

George didn't quite know what to respond to that. "Hazel....". "No George listen, I mean it. You are ready for whatever is next, you left her in the past but I can't do that yet. I'm not ready. Calling you wasn't fair of me". He sighed. She was right, it wasn't fair. She got his hopes up. No, that's not true, he got his hopes up himself. It still wasn't fair but it wasn't her fault, so that's what he told her. "All of this is everything but fair but you know it's not your fault right?".

Hazel stayed quiet. She felt like it was an impossible task to get him with both feet back onto the ground. She could deliberately set him on fire and he would still tell her it was okay and it wasn't her fault, that he probably deserved it. It made her somewhat uncomfortable. "Maybe you should go", she ultimately said, avoiding his gaze.

Something inside him told him not to listen to her, to stay here until she would realise he wasn't that bad of a person. But he knew he was no Lando and he knew he would most likely never meet the standards Lando had set. And he knew that he would only make things worse if he stayed, she wasn't ready.

Maybe one day.....

But today was just not that day.

Sorry for the long wait.
Don't forget to stay hydrated and love yourself 🀍✨
