"Can I come in?" Her looking at him with those puppy dog eyes made it hard for him to stand his ground. He has always had a weakness for her when she looked at him like that. "No, I was just about to leave actually". But of course she doesn't believe that, Lando is not the best liar. "Please let me in, I really need to talk to you". "Oh, you're finally going to tell me why you have been acting so fucking weird these past months?", he scoffed sarcastically and to his surprise Hazel nodded in response. "Yeah".
Lando has been keeping his distance from Hazel lately. He knew there was something she was not telling him but up until the situation on the balcony at Charlotte's party it hadn't really bothered him. It's not like he has to know everything that is going on in her mind but now he knows that the issue involves himΒ its different. All the worst case scenarios had been running through his mind ever since, it really took its toll on his mental health.
Even though it was hard for him to keep his distance he knew it was for the better. Their relationship was at stake, and not just a couple months, they have been in a serious relationship for one year and eight months. That's not something you're just gonna throw away like that. Lando couldn't imagine having to love someone other than Hazel, she kept him with both feet on the ground but lately he felt like one of his feet started floating.
Lando hesitantly stepped aside to let Hazel in. She was anxiously hopping from one feet to the other as Lando sat down on his couch, looking at her questioningly. "Please sit down". It was really working on his nerves. Lando impatiently tapped with his fingers on the leather material of his couch while Hazel was trying to find the right words to say. She didn't quite know where to start.
They both felt uncomfortable with the loaded silence between them. Hazel awkwardly cleared her throat. "Sooooo..". Lando turned his head to face her. "Go on". Hazel sighed. "I don't really know where to start". "Yeah I figured", he mumbled. Hazel reached for her boyfriend's hand and intertwined their fingers. "I love you so much, you know that right?". Lando squeezed her hand in respond. "I know". A moment of silence again as Lando waited for Hazel to continue who was still searching for the right words to say. "Lando....", a tear escaped as the pair locked eyes. Seeing the pain in Lando's face was unbearable for her, and she hasn't even told him yet. "What did you do Hazel?". His voice sounded just as small and fragile as hers.
"Nothing?", then suddenly it hit her. "Oh god, you didn't think I was cheating on you, did you?".Β Lando looked away so she didn'tΒ see the tears forming in his eyes. "Lando, you know i would never!". he released his hand from her grip before looking at her again. "Do I though? Because frankly I don't even recognise you anymore lately!". Hazel exhaled sharply. " I know. I am so so sorry Lando please, believe me. I never meant to hurt you". Lando sighed.
He knew she was right. They have always had a very healthy relationship, they would never intentionally hurt each other. When he looked into her eyes he could still see love. She didn't lie, she still loves him. Yet he could see something different, he couldn't put his finger on it but he felt like something had changed.
Then Lando decided to ask the question he didn't really want an answer to. His chest felt heavy and his throat felt tight as he spoke up. "Are you breaking up with me?". Her response validated his biggest fear. "I love you Lando". He cleared away the tears forming in his eyes. "But you're not in love with me anymore, are you?". Hazel lowered her eyes.
"Is it something I did? Is there something I have to do better? Is there something i could do to make you stay?". He could no longer push back the tears forming in his eyes and let them roll down his cheeks. His lips trembled and and his hands started to shake. Tears streaming down Hazel's face as well as she looked up at Lando and shook her head. "Gosh Lando no, you are perfect. You were the best thing that ever happened to me".
Hazel took Lando's face in her hands and wiped away his tears. "But now you found something better?", he whispered sadly. She looks down. "I can see colour now". There was no way she could look him in the eyes while telling him this. Lando lets out a shocked gasp. "No", it was almost inaudible but Hazel heard the raw pain in his voice. She wrapped her arms tightly around his neck while he clung onto her, sobbing into her chest.
The couple sat there crying, holding onto each other tightly. "I didn't want to this happen, I don't want anyone else but you", Hazel spoke up after a long time. "But Lando...". Lando lifted his head up and looked at her with his tearstained eyes. "Your soulmate is still out there somewhere, I don't want to hold you back in finding her". "I don't want to love anyone else but you", his voice still shaky from crying. "Me neither, I could never love someone the way i love you".
"I knew this day would come", Lando sighed as he wiped away his tears. "And I'm kinda glad that you found your soulmate first because I would rather die than doing what you had to do today, you're so strong Hazel, you taught me so many things I'm gonna benefit from for the rest of my life". Hazel rested her forehead against Lando's. "Can you just promise me one thing please?". "What?". "Please allow yourself to love him. Don't hold back because of me, I'll be fine. All I ever wanted in life was for you to be happy Hazel".
They stayed in each other's embrace once again, not ready to let go yet. Lando knew that the second Hazel would pull back he'll never get to hold her this close anymore. He closed his eyes as she trailer his nails over his back like she always used to do when he was upset. It was calming him down until he realised he didn't even know who this guy is. Lando backs up to look Hazel in the eyes.
"Do I know him?". Hazel awkwardly clears her throat. "Yeah". "Who is it?". "You sure you want to know?". Lando nodded in response. This part was harder than Hazel expected it to be. She was building up the courage to tell him that her soulmate turned out to be one of his best mates. "George", she mumbled almost inaudibly. "Oh shit", was his response.
The awkwardness and surreality of it all made Hazel starting to giggle. Lando looked at her and couldn't suppress a giggle either. "That's kinda messes up", he giggled. "Yeah well that's quite the understatement", she laughed. Yeah, maybe they were just laughing to hide the pain that they were in but as if right now, Lando couldn't care less about that. He cherished every moment he got to spend with love of his life, especially now he knew these were going to be their last moments.
"It's time for me to go Lando", Hazel whispered softly after a while. Lando knew it, the longer they would procrastinate it the harder it would get. The couple got up from the couch and walked towards Lando's front door. "So this is it I guess", Lando shoved his hands in his pockets, trying to hold back a new flood of tears. "Thank you for everything Lando, I will never forget you and everything you did for me". Hazel did not even try to hold back tears.
"I will never stop loving you Lando", she whispered crying while taking his face in her hands once more. "You made me the man I am today and i will forever be grateful for that. I will never stop loving you Hazel". Their lips trembled as they connected them for the very last time. Both were hoping for this kiss to last forever. But they knew that wasn't an option. It was Lando who pulled back first. "I hope we can be friends again at some point", he whispered against her lips.
"This isn't the end of us Lando, just of this chapter".
