The streets looked like an unfinished painting. So much of the canvas was still perfectly white, as if waiting for the artists hand to return. The moonlight struggled through the murky clouds, but even in its weakness it was enough to blind.
The outdoor ice skating rink in town was small, but always crowded. Even in miserable weather, people still had the urge to go slide around on ice for a couple hours.
After seeing that the local cafe was closed we decided to walk around the town. With James wearing a black tuxedo and me wearing a pale pink shirt and jean skirt.
"You sure you wanna go skiing?" James asked as I raised my hand, grasping at the fake snow.
"Yeah, how bad could it be?"
"Whatever you say," I heard James whisper under his breath. I turned to him, a smile on my face as I held out my hand.
An Autumn wind gusted past, ruffling my skirt and blowing my hair into my face. The air smelled of wood smoke and promised rain. The purple evening sky could be seen in intervals between the heavy gray clouds. Red and gold leaves danced on the wind, twirling and pirouetting to their temporary resting places until the next breeze blew.
I loved Autumn intensely, especially in this side of New York, where its old homey buildings and coffee shops complemented the copper and scarlet hues of the season perfectly.
I took out my phone and snapped photos of the sky, the small grove of trees in the parking lot, my black boots against the rain-dampened pavement. I turned the phone to James, taking a photo of him without him looking.
I giggled at the photo of James. With his hair all tousled and his white shirt untucked.
"Oh? What do you have here?" James spoke from behind me, his breath lingering on my neck. I moved my neck slightly, letting him place a kiss on my neck.
Momentarily distracted I closed my eyes, feeling my phone slip out of my hand. My eyes opened immediately, and I turned to James who had already run closer to the doors.
"Are you coming?" James shouted over his shoulder. With one last look at the falling leaves, I ran to catch up with James.
Inside, we paid the fee and James agreed to wait in line for the rental skates while I got distracted by the snow fluttering down the night sky.
"You know we look like idiots?" James said as I pulled on my skates, double tying them. I didn't want a repeat of what had happened last time we went skating.
Let's just say I fell....many times. James sure enjoyed it though.
"More like you look like an idiot," I giggled looking at his ruffled tux, "I look completely normal."
I gestured to my clothes and James rolled his eyes, "June you look anything but normal."
"And what's that supposed to mean?"
"Your exceptionally beautiful," James pecked my cheek, leaving a red tint.
Of course he would say something like that. He always liked to see the affect he had on me, and how flustered I got.
When the two of us finally got on the ice I had a white knuckled grip on James hand as he pulled me along slowly. His face was almost as red as mine, though I looked more flushed from exertion than suppressed glee.
James seemed to notice that I was holding onto him and began speeding up, slowly at first but before I knew it I had fallen down onto the harsh ice.
"Ah!" I gasped.
I looked up to James, who hovered over me with his hand stretched out. I smiled at him, taking it as I pulled myself off the floor and pulled myself into his arms. For a second I was worried he would fall, and braced myself for impact with the cold ice again. But instead of falling again James' warmth enveloped me.
"God I feel like I lost a tooth," I groaned against him, rubbing my face.
He looked down at me,Β inspecting the damage. James arranged his expression in mock horror, "Oh god...Your front teeth!"
"What? What's wrong with them!" I screeched.
I felt my face get redder as he looked around at the ice floor before back to me, "Oh damn. Maybe we can backtrack your steps and find them or - "
My hands flew to my mouth, feeling for any spaces or imperfections but finding none. James burst out laughing, grinning.
"You're fine, June. Your teeth are all present and accounted for."
James threw an arm around my shoulders and flashed his blue eyes at me, "I was just messing around. You forgive me, right?"
"Your such a nerd," I looked away from him, pouting, "You'll have to do more than just say you'll sorry."
"I mean technically I didn't say I was sorry."
"James!"
I pulled myself out of his arms, slowly dancing of onto the ice skating rink. I looked back to James who was skating over to me,Β "I'm sorry Juniper. Forgive me, please."
I turned back to him, "What's in it for me?"
"A kiss?"
I shook my head.
"Fine, breakfast in bed?" James asked as he moved closer to me.
I peeked at him, pretending to still be thinking it over. After a moment I turned back to him, "Fine."
James pulled me closer to him, twirling me into the air. I giggled, closing my eyes and tucking my blonde hair into the corner of his neck. James set me down, my arms still wrapped around his shoulders while his settled at my hip.
Silvery flakes drifted down onto the two of us, glittering in the bright light of the harvest moon. Large flakes feel as if angels in heaven were having a pillow fight. Though the snow was beautiful it was cold and sharp.
James gazed back, fluttery eyelashes and all, "You hungry?"
I snapped out of my trance. "I could eat."
"Well, then let's go." James swerved expertly around other guests while I started to glide on the ice a little, shifting my weight back and forth hesitantly on the skates.
"I'll get a table you get the food?" I asked as James nodded.
I sat down at the last empty booth.
"Hey, June!" James shouted all the way from the food shack on the opposite side of the rink. "Do you want fries or nachos?"
"Fries!" I called back and smiled to myself.
James made his way back to me, two things of fries in hand. He smiled, "I'm starving."
I had to agree. All that sweating and trying not to fall wore me out. I took a bite of the fries, letting the salty taste take me over. God I had forgotten how good fries were.
"Ready to leave?" I asked as we finished our food.
James nodded, "Your place?"
"Yeah," I got up, as the two of us skated towards the entrance. I looked at James, smiling. Unaware that this was the last time I would be able to hold his hands with nothing but love and content.
