King's Landing, 283-285
In the end of Robert's rebellion there was a lot of death and bloodshed. Rhaegar's line had ended, his only surviving child was Aegon Targaryen, the son he had the audacity to name after his deceased son with princess Elia Martell. Rhuelle, his younger sister felt hatred for once in her life, not only for her brother but for Lyanna as well. He returned to King's Landing and Lyanna Stark, returned with him.
Rhuelle didn't greet her brother like her mother had done, instead, she remained in her room. Jaime Lannister brought her the news, Rhaegar had come home, safe and sound. She didn't say anything to her brother, she simply sat near as he gave his speech of peace, love and duty. Her mother could see she was irritated with her brother but she too felt angered by her sons doing.
Robert was brought to court, Rhaegar pardoned him, stating that Robert just wanted his betrothed back and no more. House Stark was also pardoned, like Robert they just wanted Lyanna back. Robert remained in King's Landing per Eddard's request. Robert and Rhuelle were the best of friends growing up never being apart, until he left to be foster with the Arryns. Now, they felt like strangers. Rhuelle wanted to spite her brother and what better way than to marry. She thought maybe Eddard Stark, perhaps even Robert.
She wrote to him, it was something she never expected a reply from but, when a letter returned with an agreement it was all fun and games for them. They didn't care. In public they acted so in love that many were confused. Was Robert not trying to end the Targaryen dynasty over Lyanna? If not, it had been to quick for him to have moved on. The two had courted for nearly a year when Robert Baratheon realized it was no longer acting but actually love.
Robert never loved Lyanna, he loved the idea of her but never truly her. Now, he was one hundred percent sure he loved Rhuelle. When Lyanna had first announced she married Rhaegar on her free will Robert raged stating she was lying. Jon Arryn told him something better with come but the Stag would not hear it not until his best friend returned to his life. Robert at the beginning stayed for his good friend but as soon as Rhuelle came back into his life he dreaded going home.
Things got worse when Lyanna was announced barren and as bad as it sounded, Rhuelle was happy about it, that would teach his brother a lesson. It was then that Rhaegar had made another choice, he wanted to marry his sister so she could provide him with more children. Robert was walking around with Edward when they heard the siblings. "I will not marry you, Rhaegar. Have you lost your mind?!" she asked. "No, Rhuelle. We must do this" he replied. "I won't do it" she replied. "Even I am not above duty, Rhue! This is not up for discussion. We are to be wed in a moon. You best get used to the idea of sharing a bed with your brother" he said before walking away. Leaving the young princess with tears threatening to fall.
Robert had the idea at first, Eddard who was there and who was told about the plan thought it was a bad idea but he felt bad for her. She didn't want to marry her brother and why did she have to pay for Lyanna's and Rhaegar's mistake. Robert asked her to meet him by the Kingswood. It was midnight when she arrived, she could see the small fire and two horses, Robert sat near it. "Robb, what's wrong?" she asked. "I heard you're getting married" he began and she looked away. "Please, do not remind me of the painful duty I have to do now" she told him. "What if you don't do it?" he asked testing the waters. "What?" she asked. "Run away with me, to Storms End" he told and she thought about it.
Could they pull it off? She was to be the new queen in a moon time, she didn't want to but it was the king's order but why was she then suffering? "Robb, we can die because of that. Do you want to die?" she asked. "Rhaegar won't let that happen" she added. He shook his head no. "I don't care. I realized that I never loved Lyanna. I loved the idea of her but never her. But you, I do love you. More than I care to admit. You make me truly happy. You're the woman I want to wake up to for the rest of my life. I want to be with you, till the end of my days" he told as he grabbed her hand. Rhuelle even when she hated the idea of marrying her brother she was truly willing to do, for the realm and her family name but now, she had a chance at love was really willing to give it up for her brother? No, she was not. She took his hand and pulled him in for a kiss. That was all the reassurance he needed before getting her on the other horse.
That night, princess Rhuelle disappeared into the night. Rhaegar Targaryen had always been a patient man, always. But, his sister seemed to always want to make his life as miserable and troublesome as she could. "So, you're saying my sister just disappeared? No trace? No letter? Nothing?" he asked the guards who were supposed to watch over her. "It appears she escaped through a hidden passage in her room, my king" the man said. The king excused the man. It had been nearly three years when he finally heard of her. "The princess is fine, your grace. She now has two children, your grace" Varys said as he sat in the council room. "Children?" Rhaegar asked, he was of course confused by the news. When did she get pregnant? Who was the father?
"And who is the father?" he asked, the table was awfully quiet. Eddard Stark who had a place at the council knew that of course but the way he and his good friend were writing to each other kept the letters away from prying eyes and he knew the two had married as soon as they arrived to Storms End. "Lord Robert Baratheon, your grace" Varys replied. The table soon went quiet as the words left Varys's mouth. No one said a word, too afraid of the king's reacting. "You must be joking" he said with a laugh, thinking it was a mere joke. "No, your grace. I'm afraid it's true. My birds told me the union took place the same year she disappeared, as soon as they arrived to Lord Baratheon's home" he said. "I want her back her. I want her and her... lord husband to come and explain to me why they did this without my permission" everyone nodded and stayed quiet. "Everyone is dismissed" he said. As lord Stark made his way out he was held back by the king. "lord Stark" he said. "Yes, my king?" he said. "Did you know?" Rhaegar asked. "No. He had said the two were courting but as soon as you announced your betrothal to the princess they stopped seeing each other" Rhaegar nodded as he signaled for him to go.
News reached Robert and his lady wife. Soon enough, princess Rhuelle decided to was time to face the devil. It took them two moons to arrive, Rhaegar, Lyanna, Prince Aegon, Prince Viserys, and the queen mother Rhaella waited near the gates for their arrival. Lyanna as said, never bore another child. Robert came first, his loyal soldiers beside him, his lady wife in the carriage. They came to a stop, first ones down where the nursemaids, then the children. Orys Baratheon was a Baratheon through and through. Daemon Baratheon was a Targaryen through and through. Rhaegar chest grew with anger at the thought that those two boys could've been his sons. Then, came her, Rhuelle. The princess was heavily pregnant with her third child. It was rub to Lyanna's face. "Your grace" they both said. "This is what you've been doing this whole time?!" he yelled as he grabbed her arm and pull her close to him. "Rhaegar!" his mother yelled at him.
He let go off her and took a step back. Everyone stared at the king many people were happy the princess did what she did. She would not be treated the same way her mother was by her father, she choose a different fate. "Come" he said to his sister who followed. Robert was told to stay back with his children while his sister went with him. The council room consisted only of Rhaegar and his sister. "Why?" he asked as he finally relaxed. "I never wanted to be your wife, even before this" Rhaegar knew it was true. She never wanted to marry him, she was too young for him in the first place, she was the same age as Lyanna, but that didn't stop Lyanna from marrying a married man though. "Why can't I marry for love? Why must you take away my happiness? You did as you wish, why can't I do the same?" she asked. "You are a princess!" he yelled. "And you are a king! Why would you take another wife when you already had one? And Lyanna couldn't even bear another child" she mocked at the end. "Rhuelle" he warned. "I am married, brother. Let me be happy" she told him. He held her back by the arm, this time more softly.
"Very well then. I will allow it under one condition" she nodded. "Once you birth a daughter, she'll marry my son" he said. "I will speak with Robert, I am sure he'll agree" he nodded. He grabbed her face and kissed the top of her head. "Be happy, sister" she nodded with a smile before she walked away. Robert waited for her as she made it out. "He's given us his blessing but he asks that our first born daughter be Aegon's wife" he thought about it.
His daughter would be queen and she knew that her brother as bad as he had done he would never let his sister down, at least from this day forward. The Baratheon family stayed in court until the princess's birth. The birth that brought two daughters, Cassana, named after Robert's lady mother and Daenerys. Cassana had the Baratheon hair but her mothers eyes while Daenerys had her mothers hair but the Baratheon's blue eyes. That same day, Princess Cassana Baratheon was betrothed to the crown prince Aegon Targaryen.
It was safe to say, princess Rhaelys and Lord Robert Baratheon lived happily ever after with six Children. Daenerys married Robb Stark. Orys married Sansa Stark, Daemon married Margaery Tyrell. Rhaenyra married Quentyn Martell and her brother, Arthur married Obara Martell. All Oberyn's daughters were given the Martell named by request of Obara's good mother, Rhaelys who was the reason for peace in Westeros. She united House Stark, Tyrell, Baratheon, Tully through Catelyn's children and House Martell with House Targaryen. It was safe that Westeros lived in peace, for now. And it turns out Jon Arryn was right, something better did come and Robert Baratheon couldn't have been more happier it did.
