As long as Naerys could remember she had loved him. Jacaerys Velaryon. The two had grown up together and were the best friends. Everyone had expected the two to marry in the future as an alliance with the North could always be of great use in the future for both houses. They were cousins, her mother had married Rickard Stark to unite the North with the South and a Stark had never broken an oath, and princess Vhaella was not the exception.
Her wedding to the future king had been grand, it had been fifteen days and fourteen nights long. Everyone had attend, no one had dared to miss the wedding of the century. Jacaerys was the perfect husband, almost. If he hadn't said someone else's name instead of her on their wedding night. That night changed everything. She tried to forget but every night he laid with her he said her name. Helaena.
Sweet Helaena was nothing but kind to her, she couldn't imagine it. Naerys didn't resent her, she couldn't. Who could resent her? Helaena, who was married to her terrible brother Aegon loved her cousin, Naerys. The two only had each other growing up as the only girls in the family. Jacaerys, decided to leave for Dragonstone, taking his wife with him. A bit after their arrival, her pregnancy had been announced. The first child. The heir. Everyone prayed for a healthy boy. So did Naerys who as much as she wished for a girl knew a son had to be born first.
Sadly, it seemed like the Gods were not in her favor as she give birth to a daughter. Little Visenya was her mothers joy. Princess Visenya also became princess Rhaenyra's favorite companion as she took her everywhere she went. If the princess was not with her mother she was with her grandmother. Jace loved his daughter without a doubt.
She was introduced to court but after their return Jacaerys changed. He demanded a son. The heir even though his mother had said princess Visenya was to be queen after him. Prince Baelon came on a few days before his sisters first name day, alongside him his older brother Aemon. Prince Baelon was named after king Viserys and prince Daemon's father. And Aemon was named after princess Rhaenys's father. Finally, the sons. The heirs but neither of them would ever be king, as much as Rhaenyra loved her grandsons, Visenya was the firstborn, therefore, the heir.
Princess Rhaenyra was of course excited. Everyone seemed happy except for the mother. She was unhappy. Not only with her marriage but with herself. She was letting Jacaerys control her. When Visenya's second name and her brothers first name day came around everyone seemed to forget her daughter. The heir. But they seemed to oversee it as they had the boys they always wanted from a woman.
Daemon had seen it first. Naerys's light was deeming everyday. Jacaerys was starting to become like his grandfather, king Viserys. The night of the celebration, everyone was attending a private dinner before the tourney the next day. Everyone cheered for the sons and the father but no one for the daughter and the mother who brought her and her brothers to the world. They all cheered with smiles on their faces while she cheered with tears running down her cheeks.
They all thought they were tears of happiness. Or perhaps the alcohol was taking over, which was why Jacaerys had sent his wife to bed earlier. She waited for him but he didn't return until early morning. She was awake when he returned smelling like her. Helaena. She pretended to be asleep when he came into her bed and pulled her close to him. She held her tears. She was never the same.
Daemon approached her days later. "You're gonna let him treat you like a common whore?" he asked as she remained quiet. "He doesn't deserve you. You've always known that" he added. "I am his wife. My duty is to stand beside him till the end of my days" she replied. "And you have. Yet he scorns you to be with Helaena" she closed her eyes, trying to stop the hold the tears back. "Stop it, Daemon. You're being cruel" she told him. She sat in her chambers in Dragonstone. Rhaneyra and the rest were in King's Landing preparing to return to their ancestral home soon.
He kissed her neck. "Fucking is a pleasure, you see. Don't deny yourself of it" he said as he continue to kissed her all over her body. Naerys didn't mean to entangle herself in an elusive affair with her uncle. It started off as a one time thing but it got to more as Jacaerys was often traveling to King's Lading due to matters of the court, and of course with him went everyone else. Naerys soon fell with child, and once again the realm was ecstatic.
Princess Alyssa was born during a winter storm in the North. Her mother, princess Naerys was visiting her home alongside her children. The North welcomed her and her children. Princess Vhaella, her mother cherished her daughter's visits, she spent all the time she could with her grandchildren as did Brandon her father. Alyssa was truly her father's daughter but only those who knew him as a child could tell. But her mother knew Daemon was Alyssa's father but she looked the other way just as Viserys had done with Rhaenyra and her children. Her mother simply told her to be careful and to not get too close to the fire for she could get burn. Even as a dragon.
Her return was welcome with the whispers of Jacaerys's infidelity. Rhaenyra welcomed her and profusely apologized for her son's actions but the young girl cared very little for it. She had always known. Jacaerys arrived to their shared chambers that night. She sat on the bed, looking at the door, waiting for her husband to walk through them. "Naerys" he said, although it was like whisper. "I've come to apologize" he began. "I didn't-" she put a hand up. "I truly do not care, Jacaerys" she said. "I've known about your love for her since our wedding night when you called out her name instead of mine" she paused. "But how could you be so careless?! Now, the whole realm knows and they have taken me for a fool. And perhaps I was. But I choose to live on my own denial. The denial to the fact that my husband does not love me. That he loves another. They pity me. The beautiful princess, being disrespected by her husband" there was a brief pause.
"I have to be miserable for the rest of my life. With you. And I hate you for it" she looked at him. "I love you once, you know?" she asked. "Naerys" he began but she cut him off. "I know you love her. I have always known. But, I hoped that with time you could have learned to love him. After a while I just stopped hoping for something that would never happen. I have come to the idea that you will never love him. And truth be told, I am okay with that now. I just wished I should have listened to my mother and married someone else" she stood up and left the room.
Daemon saw her leave. He followed her, the secret passages came in handy when she needed them. She found Daemon. "See? He's a fool" he said. Daemon never married after lady Rhea's death. Even when Rhaenyra begged him to marry her he denied her and choose to be free from the duty of marriage. He choose to support her but he would not marry her. She held on to him. "He doesn't deserve you. He doesn't protect you. I would" he said as he looked at her in the eyes. "And I will" he said before kissing her.
When Visenya was born, she was only fifteen summers old. Sixteen when her sons were born. Alyssa was born when she was near her nineteenth name day. Prince Maegor and princess Maegelle were born on her twenty second name day. Hours before her name day. Daemon had been there since her "husband" had been away in King's Landing for matters of the court once again but Daemon knew why he was in King's Landing. They had said the princess had almost lost her life that night. Daemon had nearly lost his mind, thankfully the maesters were loyal to him and kept the secret.
Daemon had become princess Naerys's sworn word. He swore to protect her and her children from any harm. And he stayed true to his words. Everywhere she went he went. Everyone then began to whisper that he loved her. He loved her with all his might but no one truly believe it. Prince Jacaerys's sweet, loyal and dutiful wife? What an absurdity. Daemon loved her. For nearly seven years he had been by her side. Jacaerys rarely spent time with her or their children. He was always too busy with matter of the court to be there.
When proof of his infidelity came, princess Naerys petitioned for an annulment. He denied the accusations but many had seen him with another woman. So, king Viserys allowed it, as did Rhaenyra who approved and felt ashamed for her sons actions. Princess Visenya would be the new heir to the throne after her father even if he had any other children neither of them would have a claim to the throne. Baelon was named lord of Dragonstone and Harrenhal was given to Aemon since the Strong's were long gone.
On her twenty fifth name day princess Naerys announced her bethrotal to prince Daemon Targaryen and two married two moons later in the tradition of old Valyria. Princess Aemma and princess Alysanne were born the year after. And when she was twenty eight she gave birth one last time to Duncan and Aenys. Everywhere she went Daemon was never far behind. Princess Visenya visited her fathers family as often as she could. She was the future queen after her father. She wasn't close to him as she was with her father Daemon but she was close to her grandmother, queen Rhaenyra who took her to court and taught her all she needed to know as the future ruler of the realm.
Jacaerys never remarried, and well, no one wanted to marry a man who's children would inherit nothing. Daemon loved his wife and everyone knew that. Every tourney there was, Daemon participated and won, always gifting his wife the crown of blue roses. His queen of love and beauty. The story of Daemon and Naerys always ended beautiful. "Prince Daemon loved his lady of Winter. In this life and the next. They lived happily ever after"
