Princess Daena was her fathers daughter. She was prince Daemon's daughter with Dyanna Martell Dayne. It was said princess Daena was just like her father if not worse. Many rumors had always surrounded the girl and of course her father. Her lady mother, the princess of Dorne was not married to prince Daemon, before or after dyeing was conceived, she did not wish to. Yet, the two raised their daughter together. Princess Deana was legitimized in King's Landing by her uncle, King Viserys.
Daemon Targaryen was content with the fact that his daughter might not be the queen of the Seven Kingdoms but she was going to be the ruler of Dorne. Princess Daena spent her time in either Dorne or King's Landing although after her father married Lady Laena she spent a lot time in Pentos.
As the years passed, Daena grew into a beautiful princess. Always training and riding her Dragon, SandSnake, as the beast was the same color as the deserted sand of Dorne, it could blend in Dorne but at night or on dry land it was very noticeable. The years had done her justice, or at least that was what Aemond Targaryen would often hear. There were many rumors surrounding princess Daena as some said she had bedded women and men all the same, she was Dornish after all some would say.
When her father returns to court so does his daughter. Prince Lucerys was being questioned once again for not looking like a "true" Velaryon by his uncle Vaemond. After king Viserys' entry hers was next. "Princess Daena Stormborn of House Targaryen and Martell, crown Princess of Dorne, mother of dragons and breaker of chains" the man said as she walked in.
Wherever she was at, Daena felt and looked powerful. She was the embodiment of a queen and a warrior. She was her father's daughter after all. She stood next to her father, clearly showing her support for her cousins. Princess Daena was a beauty and unmarried too.
Otto Hightower knew that his grandchildren may never sit on the Iron Throne but perhaps one of her grandsons could marry into the Dornish royalty and have a good title there. Aemond and Daeron were the only ones stills unmarried. But, it seemed Aemond was the best choice for her. Aemond kept his eye on her yet she remain impassive, she barely even notice him and if she did she was good at hiding it.
Prince Daemon prided himself on his children, specially his daughter princess Daena. Daena was much like her him, she loved to listen to him tell his stories. Princess Rhaenyra was a good friend to her and there was not much the two did not talk about. So, on her return princess Rhaenyra asked for a favor. She asked Daena to wed prince Lucerys. Prince Lucerys was younger than her by two years. He was ten and three and she was ten and five. Daena told her she would think about it as she did not know if she was ready to get married or not. Prince Daemon had agreed if his daughter wished to as well if not then no wedding would occur.
Daena had loved a lot of love for Rhaenyra and her children. She had grown up with them and with her sisters as well so the five of them were very close growing up and even now. So, being marrying to Lucerys was not a bad thing, both could rule by each other sides for the rest of their lives. But, then prince Aemond came into her life. It was odd to say the least but the two bonded. They both loved to ride their dragons and train. They loved literature. He was amazed by her writing skills and her art. She knew how to make beautiful portraits of others and nature.
Prince Aemond had fallen in love with Daemon's daughter but he knew Daemon would never let them marry even when his dragon swore that the two would marry in the ways of Old Valyria. They would fly back to Dorne where the two would be happy as the new rulers of the land. But, Aemond's insecurities got the best of him and he proposed to Lady Cerella Lannister instead, breaking the princess heart.
Princess Daena showed nothing though, she smiled and congratulated the two in their marriage and wished them a happy life full of healthy babes. Daemon knew of his daughter's late adventures with Alicent's son but said nothing as he saw how happy his little girl was. Truth be told, Daemon didn't care who his daughter married. He could be a stable boy or a girl and he would not care as long as she was happy. But, the one eye prince had broken his daughter's heart even if she did not show but he had.
The night everyone had expected her arrival. Prince Aemond had announced his engagement publicly. Prince Daemon and princess Rhaenyra stood. "It is with great pleasure that I announced a new union in our family" Rhaenyra began and people thought she spoke of her brother and Lady Lannister. "My son will marry his cousin, princess Daena Targaryen Martell during the summer time. Uniting House Martell and Targaryen once and for all" the people cheered as Lucerys and Daena stood. The two smiled at each other, they weren't in love but they cared very deeply for each other. Aemond said nothing, what could he say? He saw how happy she was and said nothing.
By the end of the feast, Daemon found him by the dragon pit. The two said nothing for a moment but Daemon finally spoke. "I would have allowed you to marry her, you know?" he began and Aemond stopped. "Daena is my first born daughter and the light of my life. If she would have told me she wanted to marry you I would have let her. But, I'm glad you let her go. She deserves much better than you. I know that now. I hope you don't regret breaking her heart" he said before leaving the prince alone with his own thoughts.
Daena left that morning, her mother had fallen ill and nothing could be done to save her. Prince Daemon left hours later. Daesa had been his greatest love but the two could not be together, they were too stubborn and too wild to be together. But, their love remained the same. Her mother had looked the same as she did when she met Daemon, and Daemon looked the same too. It was like they were frozen in time from the moment they met. Two souls destined to love each another but never be able to be together.
"My sweet girl" her mother said. It was barely a whisper but her daughter was close enough to hear it. "I don't want you to go mother" she cried. It was the first time in a long time either of her parents had seen her cry. "I know, my sweet girl" her mother began. "But it is my time. You know I've been ill for a long time, we knew nothing or anyone could save me from this fate. I came to understand that this was the way of life. We all die, one way or another. Once I go, you My sweet girl, you will be the next ruler of Dorne. You will do right by our family, our legacy and our people" Daena nodded. "I wish you could be here the day I get married" Daena said. "You will marry the Targaryen prince" the princess mutter a low no.
"Aemond, he did not love me. Or perhaps he did not love me enough to marry me. I will marry prince Lucerys Velaryon. I know he will do right by me and our future children" her mother had met her family in rare occasions and she hoped one day her daughter would marry one of Rhaenyra's children as she did not trust any of the Hightower's girl sons. Daena bid goodbye to her mother and left her with Daemon. She knew her mother still loved Daemon as he too loved her as well. But, sadly their same personalties did not let them be free and happy together.
Her mother died that night, with her daughter Daena and Daemon by her side. The funeral came a day later. It was only her father and some close family of her mother that was there. That afternoon, princess Daena was crown as the next ruler. Daena wanted to marry Lucerys but told Rhaenyra she would wed him when he was ten and five. So, two years later, the two met in Dragonstone and married in the old ways of old Valyria. A private ceremony. Then they married in Dorne where Lucerys had come to love the people and their traditions. The two had a small wedding in Driftmark in the presence of his father's family. The bigger feast was in King's Landing. Her father, good mother and uncle went all out. It was said it was the biggest wedding the realm had ever seen. Bigger than the heir's wedding.
Lucerys, given that lord Corlys still lived left to Dorne with his wife were he was free to do as he please. He spent time with his wife learning how to rule and all. After a year of marriage the two finally welcome a son into their lives. Prince Oberyn would be the next ruler of Dorne. Two years later came Laenor after his grandfather. A year after Laenor, princess Daena gave birth to a son she named Daemon and a daughter named Dayna, named after her mother. Princess Nymeria and her twin Rhaenyra came three years later.
Prince Lucerys and his wife Princess Daena had six children, three sons and three daughters. It had been ten years since either of them had been to court. His mother Rhaenyra had called to see her coronation as her father was too ill to even continue ruling. Princess Rhaenyra became queen at last. It was then, that Aemond had seen her for the first time in twelve years. He did not attend the wedding, neither did he attend any celebration that she held. She was still as beautiful as the day he met her. She was happy. Her children were running around, being watched by their father and her.
Daena had spotted him. Aemond sat with his wife as she sat next to her two children. Two daughters. Daella and Daena. Many had taught it was weird but her mother had allowed as she knew her daughters were loved regardless. Lucerys took his wife's hand before leading her to the throne room. Aemond watched Daena danced, she was laughing as she danced with her husband. He decided to dance with his wife. The two were dancing near Lucerys and his wife and he could hear them talking. "I love you" she said with a smile plaster on her face. "I love you more, my sweet wife" he said before he kissed her. She was happy, without him. She was the one who got away. Or rather the one he let get away.
