"Why me?" I ask with a hand on my hip, staring up at the tallest girl in my class, Kelly Kelly. Yes, her first and last names are the same name. I'm honestly surprised she doesn't get teased more for it. Probably because she's bigger than ninety-nine percent of the teachers.
"Because everyone else refuses," she replies, mimicking my stance except with her stare aimed downward.
"Then why don't we do a different topic?"
"Nothing else will suffice."
I narrow my eyes into dangerous slits. "It's not fair that one person has to go up against a whole class of fangirls."
"We're not fangirls," Ava says from her desk as she organizes her debate team's notes. She adjusts her large glasses that I'm pretty sure are only for show and looks up at me. "We're members of a prestige organization of those who greatly admire Lucas. And the reason you have to debate the unfavorable side is because you're not part of our prestige organization."
I roll my eyes. "Let's just get this over with," I mumble.
"Don't you want to gather your notes first?" Ava asks.
"First of all, I didn't have time to make notes. Second of all, there's no point."
"Why?" Isabella questions innocently from the seat next to Ava. "This debate is incredibly important for the end of the semester."
The nerve of these girls.
"Yeah, okay," I reply with an eye twitch. I walk over to the podium on the right side of the room and throw my backpack next to it. Taking a deep breath, I step up to the small mic. "Hello, my name is Paris Andrist and I'll be debating against the motion, 'Lucas Bryant is perfect'."
Kelly walks up to the other podium and introduces her and the other eleven members of Lucas' fan club. Ava lifts up the three feet tall stack of notes for their supporting argument. I stare down at the single blank paper resting in front of me.
"Proposition will begin," a teacher says from off to the left. She smiles assuringly but it assures absolutely no one. I still feel failure on the horizon and the fangirls still feel victory.
Why is life so unfair?
"Lucas Anthony Bryant is a well-known star," Kelly begins. "The career he created for himself that made him who he is today began one year, two months, one week, two days ago. His viral dogβ" Ava nudges her in the ribs. "Cat video burst across the internet like no other video had before. His first flawless performance was seen by hundreds of people in person and online live..."
My mind drowns out their words and I only catch things like 'he has never messed up a performance' and 'I have never seen a single pimple on his flawless skin' and the like.
When the time finally runs out, I rush forward with the words I come up with right on the spot tumbling from my mouth. "Lucas is dumb, annoying, and uh...weird. In conclusion, the other team has a passion that cannot be competed with. If you want to give me extra credit, then I can debate on how unfair this debate is. I brought notes just in case." I bend down and reach into my bag, pulling out a stack of papers twice as tall as the fangirls'. "So, how much time do I have?"
