"what's happening, where is she?" i ask through gasps of air. i had to run to the hospital from my house. lilly was in the lobby, and i assumed moonie was with iris.

"they're running scans on her head right now, moonie's with matt getting some drinks and food from the cafeteria for when iris gets back. i don't know what the doctors were talking about half the time but it didn't sound good." she rushes out, tears welling up in her eyes as she speaks.

"chris! i thought you were never going to make it." matt says from behind me, he and moonie carrying armfuls of water, soda, chips, and cookies.

"what's happening, you told me something wasn't right." i ask moonie, completely ignoring matt. she bites her lip, and gestures for me to move away from lilly and matt, i didnt even notice nick's absence until then.

"she's really confused. she doesn't remember what happened. she knew who me and lilly were, and matt and nick. she remembered her parents weren't alive, she remembered everything but the accident. like, she remembers going to the beach, getting in the water, but there's just... nothing after."

"isn't that for the best? i mean, that accident would traumatize her, right?" i asked, and moonie bit her lip again.

"they're worried it damaged the part of her brain that stores significant events. she remembers the little stuff, but nothing big." she explains, and i nod.

"okay, when are her scans going to be done?"

"any second now. nick's with her." moonie tells me, and i nod again, walking over to matt and lilly, who are both giving me concerned looks.

"mclaughlin?" a nurse asks as she rounds the corner, all of us raising our hands. "iris is okay, there is minor damage done to her brain, nothing that can't be fixed. a couple days monitoring her condition and she should be able to come home!" the nurse tells us happily, and i let out a breath i didn't know i was holding.

"thank god, can we see her?" moonie asks, and the nurse nods, motioning for us to follow her down the hall, which we had all gotten very familiar with in the last couple weeks.

"you go first." matt tells me, and i look to moonie and lilly, who both nod. i open the door, iris is talking to nick. she looks over at me and smiles.

"hi matt!" she says happily, and nick's eyebrows furrow in confusion.

"that's not matt." he says, and now iris looks confused.

"then who is it?" she asks.

"i'm chris, matt's brother, your boyfriend."

"who?"
