Chapter 41

Chioma's POV.

"Shoot! I knew I was forgetting something" I muttered under my breath as I shoved my hand into my purse, in attempt to find my phone. I kept searching but still couldn't find it and at the moment, I was already getting frustrated.

Not again! I thought I brought it with me.

I turned around to head upstairs and go get the phone, but then I saw Agozie standing right before me with a smile on his face and my cell phone in his hand.

"I took it cause I wanted to talk to you, I knew it'd get your attention" he explained as soon as I stretched my hand to retrieve the phone from him, but then he put the phone into his back pocket and grinned.

"No, I won't give give it to you. Not until you talk to me, c'mon! You avoided me all day, why?" He asked and I let out a sigh.

THAT, that right there, is the reason I avoided him. I didn't want to talk about, you-know-what.

"I'm not avoiding you, now gimme back my phone so I can leave. Amanda's waiting in the car for me" I replied and he shook his head disapprovingly at me.

"Agozie" I warned, staring daggers at him. "I don't have time for this. I should be on my way to the mainland by now, quit wasting my time!" I snapped and he shrugged nonchalantly.

"Just talk to me for a few minutes and you'll be on your way. Unless you're ready to stand here all day and argue with me" he replied, an air of confidence in his voice as he spoke, he still had that goofy grin on his lips, hands shoved into his side pockets, deep brown orbs staring lazily at me and his brows arched together in unison. A wave of uneasiness washed through me and my palms immediately became sweaty the minute he used the tip of his fingers to raise my chin, causing my eyes to meet his. I didn't want to talk about anything right now, all I wanted was to finally get to the mainland, settle down in my new home and get on with the remains of my life. "Talk to me, please. That's all I want" he said, his voice holding so much want and anticipation, orbs of deep brown softness deepening as he gazed at me with a wave of calmness swimming in the pools of his deep brown eyes.

"Agozie, can't we talk about this on the phone?" I asked, tired of having this unending conversation with him and slowly looking away from him.

"No, we're talking now. I might not be able to speak to you in person after this and that's why we're talking right now" He said and I picked at my nails, trying to come up with an excuse to avoid this conversation. But then again, why won't he be able to talk to me after this?

"Why?" I asked.

"Why what?" He returned the question.

"Why won't you be able to talk to me after this? You're not planning on committing suicide, are you?" I asked, an inquisitive brow raised suspiciously at him. He grinned and chuckled at what I'd said.

"You want me to do that?" He asked, a goofy grin on his face and I shook my head in response.

"Just answer the question" I said.

"Well, personal reasons. But that's by the way" he replied. "Talk to me, Chioma. Are you still mad at me? Shouldn't we be friends anymore? I mean, I was only trying to help and I actually see no harm in what I did and__"

"See no harm in what you did? Agozie, that, this is the true reason I don't even want to talk about this. I don't hate you or anything, I just felt a little awkward and self-conscious. It all felt so weird and so...abnormal" I said the last part in a whisper.

"So we're good? No weirdness between us?" He asked.

"Kinda... I think it's better we forget that ever happened. I think our lives will be better that way, don't you think so?" I smiled and he nodded his head in approval.

"I think so too" and then he smiled at me, that carefree and nonchalant behavior still withheld in his smile. I don't know why, but I just feel way too comfortable around him, like I can just be myself without bothering about being judged by him. "Hug me then" he finally said, breaking the slightly awkward silence, with his arms wide open. I smiled once more and finally hugged him, squirming and trying so hard to control myself the minute he pulled me even closer. His cologne wafted through the air and invaded my nostrils, that scent was enough to get me intoxicated by him.

"You know, I could come along with you if you want. I'd probably stay a few days and help out, but only if you want me to" he said, not breaking the hug. I actually thought he was sniffing my hair but I wasn't sure about that and decided to ignore it.

"Uh, you don't have to. I can manage on my own, but I'll call you when I need company or someone to make me tasty jollof rice. How does that sound?" I asked, still hugging him with an involuntary smile on my face.

"That sounds perfect" and as he said that, I felt and heard the vibration of his voice in his chest region. His deep baritone sent chills down my spine each time he spoke, with my head placed on his chest, his hands around my waist, his chin resting on my head and my smallish hands wrap around his waist.

The sound of someone loudly clearing their throat, was enough to get me out of my daze. I slowly pulled away from Agozie, knowing who was standing right behind me.

"Are you two done? If you are, then Chioma let's get going" she said, her voice held a lot of authority, so much that I wondered if she was older than her true age with the way she withheld so much authoritative audacity in her voice.

"Way to kill the vibes, Amanda. You are trying" Agozie replied, sarcasm dancing in his voice, in a nonchalant frenzy.

"I know, right?" Amanda replied, a sarcastic knockout displayed in her tone and a knowing smile on her puce, plum lips. "Chioma, come let's go oh jare!" She hollered as she walked out of the the house and headed to the car once more.

"Here" Agozie said, handing my phone over to me. I took it from him and put it into my bag. "There's something I want you to see, it's in your phone and don't ask me how I knew your password, c'mon! It's too easy. Anyway, but you'll only check it when you finally arrive at your new house or probably in the car. Just as long as I'm not there" he continued, slowly pursing his lips and placing a kiss on my forehead. "Bye" he said before walking away.

"Bye!" I hollered with a small smile displaying on my lips, and I finally walked out of the house and headed to the car.

My father had already sent me a text message, on the day he _ very rudely _ sent me out of the house, indicating the address of the house alongside the house keys which he had also given me on that same day.

I sighed the minute I got into the car and Amanda gave me an encouraging pat the minute I strapped my seatbelt on and slouched on the passenger seat, finally shutting the door.

"Don't worry. Everything will be fine" she said, encouragingly, giving me one last pat on my shoulder.

"I hope so" I replied and let out one last sigh as Amanda immediately turned on the ignition and the car growled to life. Slowly, she reversed the car and finally drove out of the parking lot, and out of the house...heading to the new place I'll now call home.

"Also," she started, her eyes not leaving the road. "I'm not sure if you know what you're doing but I hope you do. You and Agozie are really getting close, I'm saying this cause I don't want to see you hurt. I know my cousin and I know he can make a girl assume something false, even without knowing it, that's just how he is. Think about this, Chioma. I'd never want anything bad for you, I promise" Amanda said as she drove out of her street, leaving me to battle with my thoughts running wild in my head.
