Chapter 3
*EDITED*
Chioma stood next to Femi, both getting swallowed by the silence that hovered above them both - engulfing them into it's uncomfortable hands.
Femi felt awkward, as to the fact that none of them were saying anything. Finally, he decided to say something, to lighten the weirdness between them.
"So... I believe we started off on the wrong foot, at the restaurant, so I think we should try again. My name is Femi and I'm really sorry for bumping into you" he said and Chioma only looked like her patience was running thin.
She didn't want to be here, talking to him. She didn't have any interest in the conversation he was trying to start up, and she also didn't want to share anything with him. She'd rather be in her room, than to discuss anything with him. For goodness'sake! She never asked for any of this. She just got back a few weeks ago, and the last thing she wanted was to be disturbed by this... Weird discussion. And she felt a cauldron of emotions stir up inside her. The tension was evident, the awkwardness was nauseating to her, and his presence was basically irritating her. She wanted to leave!
"And I'm Chioma. Are we done now? 'Cause if you don't mind I'd like to get back inside. I think we've already gotten to know each other better, don't you think?" She asked, giving him one of her many fake smiles.
"Well, you don't have to be so rude about it," he added, not liking her tone. "And I think you actually owe me an apology" he added and Chioma shot him a look.
"For what exactly?" She asked, whilst folding her arms.
"For being rude to me at the restaurant and for your behavior right now. You're literally doing the exact same thing you did at the restaurant. What's your problem?" he replied and she scoffed.
"And why would I do that?" She scoffed again. "And if you must know, my problem; is that I'm sick of your presence and feeling suffocated by this meeting. I'm sure you are too, so just drop the act" she added, her lips stretching into a thin line, as she stared into the distance ahead.
"Because you were wrong, Chioma. I don't want this meeting too 'cause I have someone I like. But what's wrong with at least being nice to me? Just so we could be friends? What's wrong with that? Why so serious all the time? Jeez!" he replied and she quirked a brow at him and let out a laughter - one devoid of humor and rather sarcastic.
"Hmm, well I don't think so. You are the one who's clearly wrong here. Trying to get me to apologise when I clearly did nothing wrong" she defended and Femi looked at her like he didn't hear her properly.
Just a while ago he actually thought this girl actually had some manners. Those thoughts just flushed out of his head, now she has proved to him that she has absolutely no manners whatsoever. He stared at her, a frown marring his face and a hint of wonder in his eyes, shimmering under the intense gaze, and the sharp glares she threw his way.
"You know what? Fine, I think I'm done talking to you" he said and started walking into the house.
She gritted her teeth in anger, sizing his back view with her eyes. Seething with rage, she approached him and pulled him by his arm and glared murderously at him.
"And I'm done wasting my precious time on you! You're not going to walk out on me like that, if anyone's leaving first, then it's me. Idiot!" She yelled, spitting out rage with a poisonous glare heading his way - boring holes into his head. Unfortunately, everyone inside heard what she had said too.
She walked into the house, trying so hard to keep her pissed state a secret. It was too late trying to do that, for they'd heard what she said to Femi; and we're wondering why she said that to him. She tried putting on yet another fake smile, but was met with the questioning glances and looks thrown her way by both families. She chose to ignore them and sat beside her mother on the couch, making sure she didn't make any form of eye contact with Femi.
Femi also had an annoyed look on his face, which he didn't try or bother to hide. He had already had enough of this visit and just wanted to head home. Being here was of no use to him, and Chioma's behavior towards him added to his sour mood. Already, she'd been rude to him at the restaurant, but he chose to let that incident slide, and now? She was doing it again. Paving way for his distaste towards her. Truly, he had nothing in common with this girl, and couldn't be friends with her. She wasn't the type of person he liked to mingle with or dreaded associating with, and he didn't look forward to anything involving the name: Chioma Aniobi.
"How did it go?" Mrs
Aniobi asked her already angry daughter, in a whisper.
"Can we please not talk about it? And by the way, I'm still mad at you" Chioma replied and her mother placed her hand on her chest and gave her a questioning look.
"Me? What did I do?" Her mother asked, innocently, confused at her accusation.
"You know what you did" Chioma replied and pulled out her phone from her purse and furiously began to text her friend.
Such a stupid person! Me? Apologize? For what? Who does he think he is to walk out on me like that? And he says I'm rude...
She thought, as she sent her friend a text.
"The phone did not do anything to you. Be careful before you break the screen" Amara said and Chioma shot a look immediately - a look that made her mellow down.
"I was just concerned for the poor phone" she said, putting her hand up in surrender. Chioma just hissed and returned her attention back to her phone screen, typing away with an annoyed look on her face.
"Person cannot play with you? Shu?" Amara teased and Chioma just looked at her and heaved a sigh.
"I know what you're looking for. You just want me to tell you all that happened there... I'll tell you later. But for now? Just leave me alone, okay?" Chioma said to her and she nodded her head in understanding.
Still, she had something to say to her, not being able to hide her curiosities.
"Okay. But this one your conversation with him didn't last up to five minutes. And you both came out with frowns on your face... I hope you did not blast the guy with insults. I'm just saying 'cause I know my sister" Amara said with a shrug and Chioma let out a small hiss and heaved a sigh.
"I didn't blast anyone, although I wish I did" she replied and Amara wiggled her brows at her.
"This one you guys did not even get to make it through getting to know each other stage. Who knows what would have happened if you guys actually date each other?" Amara added, which only made Chioma stare daggers at her.
"You talk too much" she said to her and Amara hissed again.
"It's not even that one you're talking about that I'm thinking about now. I'm justΒ having pity on the poor guy. Fine bobo like that just had to deal with you, if he's still single then I'm sure all the girls these days no longer have good taste, excluding me though"Β Amara added and Chioma just grinned at her.
"Ever get tired of talking? I honestly wonder what you see in him. He may be good-looking, but he is an annoying person. And besides, I don't have his time. I'm sure he is one of those guys that disrespect women... I'm telling you, he has no respect for women whatsoever. He even yelled at me, can you imagine that?" Chioma said, slowly gritting her teeth at the thought.
"Then which one is your type? You're saying only saying that 'cause he probably said something you found offensive. Meanwhile, deep down in your heart, you're praying he'll come back and say: "baby I'm so sorry for what I said to you. Let's go far away on an island and get married" I'm sure..." Amara added and that made Chioma smacked her hand lightly and gave a murderous glare.
"Watch what you say. This big mouth of yours will land you into trouble one day. Talkative" Chioma replied her and Amara hissed and shrugged.
"If I don't say anything then you'll definitely beg me to talk, else, you might just die of boredom. Cause without me. Frantically speaking, you wouldn't last a day without listening to my angelic voice. The truth hurts" Amara teased and Chioma playfully glared at her.
"Ashiris, gossips, you two won't shut your mouth, right?" Their mother said to them and they exchanged glances with each other.
The two burst into a fit of laughter and Chioma was so happy to have a sister like Amara. Someone to always make her laugh.
"And you, Chioma... I still need to know what you said to that boy. Your father isn't happy with you, and if you know what is good for you; then it's best you go over to him and apologise for whatever it is you said to him" he mother informed, and her smile faltered, getting replaced by a frown.
"Over. My. Dead. Body" she said through gritted teeth, clenching her fists, as her anger steamed inside her.
"Why?" He mother pressed on, and Chioma shut her eyes and heaved a sigh to clam her nerves.
"Because, mom..." She laid emphasis on the word; 'mom'. "I do not owe him an apology. If anything, he owes me an apology, for how he spoke to me back there. He's a pretender. He's acting like a saint now, meanwhile he has no manners whatsoever, nor does he respect a lady. I'd rather die, than to have myself apologise to him" she said the last part, with so much disgust laced in every word.
Her mother blinked, in utter disbelief. Did she just say that?
Wondering why her daughter was incredulously bitter towards the young man, whom she was sure was nothing compared to the picture Chioma had drawn of him in her mind - her mother let out a defeated sigh, and said nothing to her. Choosing to let the case die a natural death.
Femi still occasionally stole glances at her, his curiosity getting piqued at the type of human being she was. One minute she was rude, the next minute she'd be happy and smiling with her sister.
Does she have a policy about being rude to outsiders or something? This girl is just so confusing!
He thought.
She was a totally different person when she was with her family members, but with other people; she was just one rude and stuck-up human being. Where they got her from, was what Femi kept wondering and asking himself. He couldn't deny the fact that he didn't like her, but neither could he deny the fact that she stroke a curiosity in him that he couldn't seem to comprehend. Soon his phone rang in his back pocket and he had to excuse himself.
Now, he was outside the house once again and he pulled out his phone from his pocket and checked the caller's ID.
It was his girlfriend.
"Hello, Jade? What's up?" He smiled as he answered the phone.
"I'm not okay" she sounded really sad, and worried.
"What happened? Tell me" he replied, alarmed at her response. To his horror, he heard her sobs over the phone.
"I- I..." She heaved a defeated sigh. "It's not something we can talk over the phone. This is important, we need to see face-to-face to talk about this. Will that be possible?" She replied, and he bit his lip in thought.
Would that be possible?
He glanced at his parents and saw that they were both caught up in the conversations they were having. Still considering whether or not it was safe to go over to meet Jade or not, an idea snuck into his head.
"Sure. Just give me a few minutes, and I'll be there" he assured, his once angry look immediately dissolved into a calm smile.
"Okay. I'll be waiting" she replied.
"Bye" came his voice.
"Bye" and then, she hung up.
