Chapter 23

Chioma's POV.

After the very tiring pillow fight fiasco I had with Amanda and Agozie, I woke up this morning with the worst migraine of all time. And sadly, I have to get home very soon cause my mom won't let me rest till I'm back soon.

"Morning" I said to the heaped up bodies ofΒ  Amanda and her cousin. Her head was on his lap and his head on her back as they both snored, yes, they both snored like deranged elephants or something.

"Morning" Agozie was the first to get up and then he slowly placed Amanda's head on a pillow cause she was apparently still sleeping.

"How'd you sleep last night?" He asked and I shrugged as I got out of bed and rubbed my sleepy eyes.

"I slept fine but I do have a really bad migraine" I said and he pursed his lips and smiled.

"I'll get you paracetamol and a glass of water, okay?" He said and I nodded gratefully while he got out of bed and went out to go get them.

I was about stepping into the bathroom to brush my teeth when Amanda suddenly woke up from sleep and let out a groan.

"My room's in a hot mess!" She rubbed her eyes sleepily and yawned extensively.

"You're just figuring that now?" I snorted and she glared at me.

"You're not going anywhere until you help me clean up. Cause I know you, you'll just say your mom said this or your mom said that" she said as she got out of bed and stretched.

"Actually, this time my mom will freak if I don't get home soon" I replied.

"Don't care!" She half-yelled.

I shook my head amusedly at her and as I watched her check her butt in front of her full length mirror.

"Stop checking it, there's nothing there. It's as dry as dry itself" I said to her and she turned around and eyed me playfully.

"At least it's visible. Yours looks like it's the continuation of your back, nothing is even visible" she just savaged me but I'll let her win this round. I don't really have her time cause of my headache.

"By the way, where did that dumb head go to? He didn't even say good morning to me" she said and I shrugged.

"He went to get me painkillers for my headache" I replied and she pursed her lips and walked to her nightstand and picked up her phone.

"Oh my God! I'm so dead!" She screamed as she immediately dashed into the bathroom and shoved me aside, grabbed her toothbrush and began to brush her teeth like a mentally challenged animal. I was shocked at her behavior and had to ask what the hell was making her act all crazy stupid.

"I'm so dead if I don't get to work in like," she peeped through the door and checked the time on her wall clock. " In like twenty minutes!" She shrieked and got back to brushing her teeth furiously.

The door soon came open and Agozie came in with the painkillers and a glass of water all placed on the tray which held in his hands.

"Sorry I took so long, I had a hard time looking for them" he said as he placed the tray on the center table in the room and waved at Amanda.

"Morning Mandy!" He hollered as he was about exiting the room. "I'll leave you guys now to do your girl stuff" he said and smirked in a such a way that made me quirk a brow at him.

"Morning" Amanda muttered as he left the room.

"Relax," I said and I left the bathroom and sat on her bed with a fresh pack of toothbrush in my hand. "You start work by 8:00am, and it's still 7: 25am" I said and I could hear her huff from the bathroom.

"My boss insists that I come early today cause we're expecting our foreign investors from Japan today by exactly 7: 45am. Now you see why I'm in such a hurry?" She replied and then slammed the bathroom door shut.

"Don't kill yourself in there!" I hollered.

"I'll try!" She hollered back and I chuckled.

Just then, my phone began to ring and I let out a very loud groan cause I knew it'd be my mom calling. I got up from the bed and walked towards the vanity table and grabbed my phone. Checking the caller's ID, I shrieked a bit cause it wasn't who I expected. It was my dad.

Femi's POV.

"Where the hell is that girl?" I asked Ben, one of the workers at the company.

"I don't know, sir" he replied and I waved my hand dismissively at him, telling him to leave. He did as told and I sat back on my swivel chair and wondered why she hadn't come yet. I didn't have her private number and so I couldn't call her myself.

And just when I was about leaving my office, I heard a knock on my door and I sighed tiredly.

"Come in" and then the door came open slowly and she came in.

"I'm so sorry I'm late sir, it won't happen again" she apologized and I rolled my eyes tiredly at her.

"That's what you said the last time you were late. I seriously don't appreciate it and I'd like you to stop doing that" I said and she nodded her head in understanding.

"I understand, sir" she replied.

"Go on. Go get the documents ready, they'll be here in five minutes so please hurry up with everything and get everything set before then" I ordered.

"Okay sir"

"You may go now" I said to her and she immediately walked out of my office.

Chioma's POV.

"Dad, I'm on my way already. What's so important that it just can't wait?" I said over the phone as Seb drove me home.

"I need those documents today and they are very important. I can't go there myself cause__"

"Cause you aren't feeling well, I know" I said, completing his previous sentence. "But do you really have to call me again to tell me the exact same thing? I'm on my way there right now" I said and I could hear my dad facepalm himself over the phone with a groan.

"This is why I had to make sure to call you again. To explain things to you over again cause I knew you don't understand what I'm saying. Those documents are super important and if I don't get them in less than an hour, my business deal with the Ayoola group of companies will be done for. And that means I'll incur a loss, now does that make sense to you?" He said and I rolled my eyes tiredly.

"You really don't have to explain it to me like I'm some kind of baby or an idiot. I get it, I'll go get the documents" I said and he heaved a sigh.

"Thank you dear. I knew I could count on you" he said and I could tell he was smiling right now with the way he said those words.

"No problem, dad" I replied, ready to hang up but then he stopped me.

"One more thing," and with that said I groaned inwardly wondering if he wanted to give me another assignment. "I want you to find a job soon. I'm tired of having you sit at home when you should be working. But that's by the way, we'll discuss this further when you get home" he said and I hissed inwardly. It's not like I'm happy that I'm not employed yet. I've just been so pissed lately to even try seeking a job. It's too much work and you don't even want to use your connections to help me out!

"Sure dad, I'll go job hunting tomorrow" I replied.

"Today" he corrected in a very authoritative manner.

"Fine!" I answered grudgingly. "Bye, dad" I said.

"Bye" and then I hung up.

"Drive a bit faster" I said to Seb.

"Ma'am, the traffic here is quite bad oh" he said and I groaned in frustration.

"You are so useless! Aren't you supposed to know your way around here? Or are you just riding a car in Lagos for the first time in your life?!" I yelled in anger. " This is why I hate you good-for-nothing nincompoops! You would have just overtaken that guy in front of you and now look where we are now. Simpleton!" I spat out in raw rage.

Dad needs those papers in less than an hour and who knows when we'll be out of here. Lagos traffic are the worst! The placed is so packed and crowdy.

"Take that route instead" I said, pointing to the untarred road at the left side of the road.

"Ma'am but that route is too long and bumpy. And the potholes are__"

"Shut up and drive, my friend! It's better than wasting our time here" I snapped and he immediately did as he was told.

The useless things we hire as aids!

* * *

The ride was bumpy and really frustrating and sadly our car had to break down. I still hadn't gotten to the company yet and my father was counting on me.

"This is all your fault, Seb! Don't you know how to drive?!" I yelled, taking out all my frustrations on him.

"But ma'am, I was trying to maneuver my way through this path. It is__"

"Shut up and don't try to argue with me! If you truly knew how to do your job properly, we won't even be in this situation. Oh gawd! You are so useless! Useless I say!" I further yelled.

"WhatΒ  do I do now?" I asked no one in particular as I rubbed my temples furiously.

"Y-you could take a taxi or a bike to the company" Seb suggested and I glared at him.

I have never made use of public transport ever since I came into this world and the nonentity was actually expecting me to take one. Is he just acting dumb today? Or is that just how he was conceived?

"Me? Make use of public transport? No way, get a mechanic or something" I replied.

"We can't find one that will be fast enough to get the work done before it's too late. The only option left is to use public transport" he suggested and I glared at him with eyes that could kill a person murderously.

"Find help, someone to give me a lift and you call Adam to come with the other car later" I ordered and he immediately went to look for a lift. I sat inside the car, wondering what I'd do.

I waited for about twenty to thirty minutes and there still wasn't any sign of Seb anywhere.

"That guy is__" I was about giving him the biggest insult of his life but then I heard a car honk at me and I got out of the car to see a midnight blue Honda Accord Jeep.

The owner of the vehicle and Seb got down from the car and then my blood began to boil to a hundred degrees.

"Ebuka!" Was all I could utter and Seb sensed the tension in the air, and was reasonable enough as to scurry away.

"Look, before you go all bat shit crazy on me. Just let me help you, at least let me drop you off" he pleaded and I gritted my teeth in anger and hatred for him.

"Save it! I don't need your help so please take your car and leave!" I yelled as I turned around to leave but he grabbed my hand pulled me back, staring at me in a very scary way.

"Your ego..." He muttered as he stared at me. "Your ego is your set back. It will ruin you one day" he said as he slowly let go if my arm.

"My ego is not my downfall, but your level of low self-esteem is a disgrace!" I snapped at him but was surprised that he smiled instead of getting angry.

"You remind me of so many things. Hot, cold, bitter, sour, peppery, feisty, danger...but you don't seem to care. I was just trying to help, I met your driver and he told me your situation. I'm offering you help and you are insulting me for it. For once in your life , Chioma. Push your ego aside and actually think" he said as he was about leaving.

He's right though, I need to get there fast but I don't want to beg him for a lift. I won't do that.

"Fine!" I finally said.

He turned around quickly and I could see him smiling.

"Finally, the tigress has been brought to her knees" he smiled and I looked away in anger.

"I haven't been brought to my knees. I'm still standing tall and letting things work out for me. I only accepted a desperate offer from a desperate man" I replied with a fake but bold smile on my face, raising my head up high in strong confidence as I walked towards the car.

"I choose to take that as a compliment" he said as he followed behind.

"Find a mechanic and get that car fixed, here's some money" I said while handing Seb a bunch of naira notes.

"Yes ma'am" and with that, I got into the car and Ebuka did same too and soon we took the tarred road this time, heading over to the company with only ten minutes left to get there on time.
