29 | You Can't Just Do That #1
I swear, guys, this isn't "take over of the OCs III" or anything. I'm just tryna set up everything for the next arc. >.<
Also, since I recently calculated and found out that -- within a collection of several books -- I have written over 50k words in just this past month, you can expect to see a bit of a decrease in my uploads, as I plan to take a step back and focus on other things I would like to do over this summer break as well. It has been fun, but I've got a lot of other passions to pursue and I don't want the only thing I did over the summer to be writing fanfiction. 😅👍

][ Previously: A reformed Jin/Twice now joins Reigen and the gang on a mission to hunt down 🎶spooky scary skeletons🎶 on the haunted Mugen train. Zeya is there too for some reason. She just kinda inserted herself into the story. I'm sorry. ][
Zeya: "Hey, Elyse... So who was it that wanted that USB so bad?"
The poor woman had no idea what devil she'd just released by revealing that information one casual afternoon.
----------
"Principle Nezu! Someone is trying to reach you on your private line, and it's really important!!" Cementos barged into the mouse's office doors, working up a sweat on the way. Nezu's mouth gaped slightly, but he stopped what paperwork he was doing at the time to press a button. A screen shot up from inside his desk, turning on to reveal an image from the live feed. He was expecting the president of the HPSC here about another problem, or perhaps even good news for once about the finding of that missing USB.
...It was about that USB alright...
Zeya leaned back in a standard office chair, the chair itself rocked back on only two legs. Her ankles were crossed, resting on the desk her phone lay on to to keep herself stationary. Fingers clasped one another behind her head. She grinned, beaming with confidence at the sight of the UA principle. For, delicately held between her canines by the plastic end was his precious USB.. and all the information that came with it.
~flashback~
Zeya was stopped on the way to the ambulance by an officer. "Hey! What you got in those pocket?" The teen stared up at him tiredly. Then, she put on a smirk and dug into her full pocket to reveal plain gray pellets.
"Why don't ya try one? Pellets of some kind from the cell we were held in! Though they taste like ####, ya only need one or two a day to keep you satisfied! Decided I'd bring some along in case of an emergency!" She explained. She wasn't lying either. Catching a glance at the local mind reader, Zeya smirked. She was allowed to join her aunt in the vehicle. Perfect.. In their haste, no one even batted an eye at her reasoning. Probably shoulda. For under all of the pellets was a cherished little USB she bet was important. After all...why else would it be in her aunt's pocket on such an important mission~?
~bye bye flashback~
"Z, is that the USB we have been looking for all along?" Nezu's eyes narrowed. Was she really so cruel to steal from those who went through all that effort to rescue her?
"Yes it is~" The teen chimed, a hand leaving the back of her head to pick it from her teeth and hold between two fingers. "Think you could get Mei on the line too?.. Thh, oh wait. She'd need captions now wouldn't she?" She laughed. "Oh well, you're good enough I guess."
"I take it you want something, Miss Zeya?"
"Daaaang! Don't gotta be so formal, big guy! I'm just here to offer up a trade is all. Nothing special."
Nezu pulled up another screen and nodded to a few other individuals on there.
"Listen, I know you've already tracked me down. ..D### quick.. and I know you've got three different strike teams already set into motion as we speak, but relax! It's not like I can break this USB right here and now! Zeya turned the metal end of the USB to her mouth, sticking out her tongue and threatening to lick it.
"Hold." Nezu instructed the team leaders.
"Nice~" The girl pulled the chip away. "You know, I've always envied big hats like you. You can do so ####ing much with the mere press of a button. .. I'll bet you know a lot of important people too~"
Nezu sighed, for now trapped, rubbing the bridge of his nose. "What do you want, Zeya?"
"I'd like for all the criminal charges against me to be dropped. You know people who can do that, right?"
"You do realize what you are doing right now will replace all of them, right?"
"Great idea! Drop this one too."
"Hhhh... These things can take months, you know?" Beginning to type away at his keyboard.
"And yet you know exactly what to do.. Almost like you have experience bailing out your buddies in the past... Am I right?"
"Wrong. Sometimes heroes are just convicted incorrectly. It helps to have the power to assist however I can."
"Call Lady Midnight off while you're at it. She's right outside my window about now, isn't she?" Nezu scoffed under his breath. Her quirk truly was dangerous. She could see things coming from a mile away! After Nezu sent the hero teacher a quick message, he returned to contacting the HPSC. Fortunately for him, they wanted a piece of that information pie too. Maybe not as badly, but they'd probably be willing to cooperate for now. At least long enough to convince Zeya that all was going according to her plan.
"Alright, my request has been sent. When will you be releasing the USB?"
"Can I attend UA too?"
'S#IT, why are you asking me?!?'
"I highly doubt you would mesh well with our curriculum, especially so late into the year."
"Bet!" Zeya uncrossed her ankles, setting her feet on the floor to allow herself to sit up. "It's not too hard, right?! Just gotta beat up some baddies! I've already been doing that for years now!"
"Ehehh..." ... 'Please keep the f### off my campus..' "H-how about this? Give us the USB, and I'll allow you to attend UA as well... Alright?"
"Keep in mind that I've already copied all this info somewhere else, so if ya screw me over, I'll sell it all to the black market for enough to bail myself out. Got that?!" Zeya double threatened. Nezu's beady eyes blinked. Crap... She really thought ahead, didn't she?
The mouse dipped his nose, a deep sigh escaping him. "Alright then.." He'd have to find a way to thwart her plans later. For now, it was probably best to just give her what she wanted. Zeya smiled. She was now one step closer to becoming a hero.
<<<<Blooper reel<<<<
"So anyways... About tax reductions.."
Click.
"Huh?" Zeya twisted her head around to the door behind her.
BANG!
"FBI, OPEN UP! GET ON THE GROUND!"
"AAAAA-"
-----
"I can go to UA too, right?"...
CRASH!
In front of the desk Zeya sat at, Midnight burst through the window, glass exploding everywhere. The small image of Nezu laughed maniacally from her phone screen, clutching his stomach and almost falling over.
"AAAAA-"
-----
"I highly doubt you would mesh well with our curriculum, especially so late into the year."
"Heheh, wanna bet-? Wait, what is your curriculum anyways? Don't you guys just go around punching people?" Nezu shook his head.
"S###, you mean I have to actually learn stuff like reading and math?!" Zeya fell over her desk, arms sprawled out. She exhaled a pathetic groan. "Eighaeuuhhh.. You know what? #### it. I'm out."

The rest of UA had shipped in late the previous night. Mob only had enough energy to say a brief hello and ensure them that he was alright. Much better than a week ago, at least.
Though the hero class was concerned for his well-being, for the purpose of not dragging out the night any longer than it needed to be, everyone decided to wait until tomorrow before talking.
It had been a long and tough week for Mob. That much was for sure. But thanks to daily Reigen, Serizawa, and Teru visits, plus all the voice mails that flooded in from all his friends and relatives back at home -- finally accessed after a few days without his phone -- Mob was feeling much better.
Still, there was a lot to go over in his head.
----------
That next morning, Mob woke up a little later than he'd hoped... Oh no. He was still so used to his mom waking him up in the morning! The alarm clock was a lot easier to ignore than her!
Mob hurried to throw on his school uniform and comb through his thick head of hair. When he was set to leave the room, the boy catapulted himself through the door, immediately hit with the sweet aroma of freshly made breakfast.
Everyone scurried around as Mob trotted down the stairs, hoarsely jabbing rach other with orders. Mob feared continuing the rest of his way down the stairs. As nice as it was that they had made breakfast, he really didn't want to think it was out of appeasing or pitying him. He was fine, really.
He dropped down the last step a lot slower than he had the first one, peering around the corner into the kitchen and the large dining table beside it. Easing his nerves, the breakfast he'd smelled was for everybody! And everyone else was already seated and eating their share of omelets. A seat for him remained empty, a hot plate of food there waiting. Mob smiled as he rounded the massive table to sit between Mineta and Iida, Izuku and Shoto seated across from him. For a while, no one uttered a sound.
"How did you sleep, Kageyama?" Iida spoke from the left at last. Mob almost dropped his fork; he'd gotten so used to the silence.
"Oh- um, pretty good."
"That is good to hear." Tenya quickly ran out of things to say. Mob realized rather quickly that it was probably so quiet because everyone was trying not to bring up what had happened last week. Even if that wasn't why, he felt that was the case, which was enough to make him terribly nervous.
"I'm really sorry for scaring you all..." Mob dipped his chin, dropping his head in a forlorn bow. Everyone's eyes shot the youngest's way, a little wider than before.
"Don't mention it!"
"I-it really was no problem, honest!"
"I'm sorry we couldn't explore the island you spent so much time on!"
"You didn't do anything to us directly at least!"
"What do you mean?? You saved all of us!!"
Mob wasn't shocked to hear this kind of reaction from them, but he didn't block it all out either. He sincerely wanted to believe them; that what he had done really was no problem. But...he knew there were better ways of going about doing what he did. Maybe, if he had simply left it to them, that villain would be behind bars instead of gone for good? Not to mention the political uproar his actions had caused, which he still felt responsible for. Doubly so knowing that his classmates would be the ones to suffer the most from this.
"I guess....thanks..." Mob continued eating without saying a peep. Since he'd acted as the ice breaker, those around him began to talk to their closest classmates around the table about random things. He enjoyed listening to them, though it was hard to focus on one conversation for very long. Then, one time when he tried to take a bite, his food wasn't there... Huh? Mob looked down, seeing that he had once again bent his silverware without his knowing.
"Shige?!" His mother would always gripe. "You need to break that bad habit of yours!"
To which his dad would always turn to her with a goofy smile. "Oh come now, dear. Shigeo's a teenager! He should be able to bend all the spoons he wants!"
Mob stared with an empty look down at his bent fork and fallen bite of breakfast.
And then every other time, his mother would gripe back to her husband about spoiling his eldest son. Then, Ritsu would bend his spoon back to its original form; assuring Mob that everything was okay. "I've got you, bro."
Everyone remained polite by not pointing out the tears that had collected in their youngest classmate's eyes. Mob was too busy staring at his bent fork to notice all the concerned looks, but that was probably for the better.
He didn't want to be here anymore... What was he thinking by coming to this place?? He wasn't getting any better; he was getting worse! And those he came to protect.. he was only putting them in further danger by simply being around them!
He just wanted to go back home... Mob wished he could just rewind time back to before he even made that decision to come. Maybe then, he could just live normally.
Mob lost his appetite. He stood, thanked everyone for their kindness, and shuffled off to reach the classroom before everyone else.
He didn't talk at all the following four hours. Even as lunch came around, the only words he uttered were to admit to Iida and Izuku that he was a little hungry after skipping out on the majority of breakfast.
The group of friends Mob had somehow accumulated walked in a protective circle around their youngest as they all reached the cafeteria. Right away, the bright lights, bold smells, and squeaks of shoes and chatter of voices all worked together to numb the boy's already fragile state of mind. He functioned on autopilot for the next few minutes, easily mistaking one meal for another and grabbing orange juice instead of milk. But of course he was too passive to consider going back for what he really wanted to eat, so he settled for this dish and drink. Pretty nice. He was not going to complain about high quality steak and rice. Hated orange juice...though...
Oh well...
"I don't recognize her from before..?" Ochako leaned back to get a better view around Iida's back. Everyone else but Mob craned their necks.
The whole group who had essentially adopted Mob as their token introvert -- aside from Shoto -- started to narrow their eyes to better and more appropriately stare at someone seated at another table.
"Is it a girl?" Shoto questioned, leaning forward to peer around Mob's head.
"Todoroki!" Izuku gasped.
"What? I don't see any long hair or-- ..oh, nevermind."
"Todoroki! Do you realize how rude that is?!"
"Pffff!" Ochako spat. "Calm down, Iida!"
Finally, Mob turned his head to see who everyone was looking at. Sitting alone at the empty end of a table was none other than Zeya, hungrily consuming the food like it was going to be her last meal. Mob's eyes widened. What was she doing here?!
"Is she an exchange student?"
"A bit late for that."
"What about Mob?"
"Even he was a pretty big exception.."
Mob wasn't about to add his two cents to the conversation. That would only place everyone's attention on him again, and then he'd be stuck there having to explain himself for the rest of lunch!
At the other end of the table Zeya sat at was full of students from Class 1-B, though they made it clear they had no interest in accepting her judging by their body language and the large gap made between them and her. She didn't seem to care however, too focused on a good meal.
After she was done, Zeya slammed her bowl down and exclaimed, "tasty!!" before looking around hungrily for someone else's meal to snatch. Mob didn't know much about Zeya, but apparently she was Elyse's long lost niece and also just started working for Reigen yesterday. Maybe that had something to do with her being here? Hard to imagine how...
After a little bit of scanning, Zeya's eyes landed on Mob. Her grin broadened, striking a hand over her head to wave the boy down.
Oh no... Mob shrank away, hoping to hide behind Izuku.
"Do you know her, Mob??" Ochako asked.
"Not really..."
Not taking the hint, or rather, completely ignoring it, Zeya pushed herself up and strode across the gap between their segmented tables, nearing the end of the table Mob sat nearest to. She literally leaned over the table, laying on top of it for a second, in order to grab Mob's unopened orange juice and replace it with her unopened jug of milk. "A trade!" She offered a smile while pushing herself back up. Everyone else was a little unsure of what to do. She had after all just crawled over their table without any warning whatsoever.
"And who, might I ask, are you?!" Chopping at the air aggressively, Iida was the first to question the bright haired teen. "Are you perhaps a foreign exchange student from a country where it is normal to crawl on tables?!"
"Yeah, actually! Y'ever heard of Pentalastan?? It's customary to dance on the tables there! Though I'll have to wait till you're all done eating before doing that!" Crossing her arms, Zeya smirked at Iida. The poor class rep couldn't tell if she was lying or not. He started to hum a tune so quiet you could barely hear it, until finally he burst in response.
"Hey, wait a minute!! Pentalastan isn't even a country!!"
"Tch! Alright, ya got me. I'm local." The teen placed her hands on her hips, still smiling faintly.
"Uh-h, hi! I-I'm Ochako Uraraka!" Ochako finally coming in with a proper introduction. "Are you a new student, or have we just never met?"
"Teh! The name's Zeya. Most of my enemies just call me 'Z' though... I just got here, yeah. Entered class 1B for the first time today, actually! Think I scared the whole class with my introduction, though. They'll get over it eventually, but for now guess I'm on my own... Heh, you shoulda seen the look on their faces though!" She remarked, casually enjoying the recalled memories. "Their teacher won't talk to me either after interrogating him about his drinking history-- so anyways, anyone got some food you don't care to finish?" She leaned her palms against the table, hungry eyes revealing her true reason for being so sociable.
All the other kids looked around at each other with the same look.
"..Eh, no thanks... I think we're good." Ochako answered for everyone.
"Awh.."
"Do you mind me asking why you only now joined UA?!" Iida here to ask the important questions.
Standing up, Zeya crossed her arms again. "Oh that? Yeah, I was having no luck getting in normally, so I held some government info or something hostage and threatened the principle to enroll me. But, don't worry guys! I came here to be a hero here; no sweat! Sometimes ya just gotta do whatever for the right thing, ya know?" She made it sound so casual. Everyone just stared up at her...astonished. Zeya immediately caught on to everyone passively ignoring her from now. They had nothing to say. But, anyone willing to threaten their principle to get in was not worthy to become a hero. Zeya sighed after receiving the cold shoulder. "Hhh, just like class 1B... Figures." The girl spun around and returned to her lonely seat.
Guess punishment can come in more forms than one.
----------
There was a lot going on in the training room where Class 1A had gathered to practice their special moves together. Something was off about the atmosphere. And there were a number of things that could point to this federally soured mood.
"Hey, Todoroki!" A panting Izuku ran up to his friend. "You told me you wanted to show off a new move yesterday!"
"Not now, Midoriya." Todoroki huffed, presently dodging charges from Kaminari. He didn't even glance the greenette's way. "I'm training with my ice today." He muttered coldly.. then used his frosted side to create an ice ramp which he ran up, forming a full bridge while he ran across it. Izuku stared, concern clear in his eyes. Shoto was acting like he used to again; even concealing half of his body in a thin but present layer of frost. His stare was icy cold, thoughts clearly elsewhere.
With his slouching shoulders, Izuku dropped the thought and turned away. Surely it wasn't just Shoto's sour attitude that had rubbed off onto everyone else. There had to be another thing responsible for this.
Oh yeah, that's right. Two of his classmates hadn't shown today. Mezou Shouji and Toru Hagakure were still on leave from campus or something. Now that he thought about it...the two were oddly quiet that past week, especially after that villain attack. Hagakure was the most obvious, usually being a very vocal girl, but Izuku couldn't recall any quippy comebacks or that rare but large laugh over the past week of Shouji either. And now.. with the two gone... Something was off.
Izuku left to go bother Aizawa about them for a moment.
Mob watched as Izuku chased down his teacher. Sighing to himself, the youngest classmate returned his attention to the little arsenal of floating rocks before him, continuing to shoot them at a target for practice.
His training was more about controlling what power he had rather than trying to push those limits. Target practice was just one of many. He was impressively good at it! Hard not to be, since essentially he had to to was imagine the rock hitting its target. The added difficulty came in the form of multitasking. Mob usually just imagined a grouping of rocks being flown at a target, but that replaced accuracy for simplicity. Aizawa encouraged him to attempt to control each rock individually to get a better grasp over every small movement they made. That part was far harder, as it required his attention to be split evenly between half a dozen objects, but, he was slowly improving. Odd thing was that this somehow made him improve in areas he hadn't expected to. He began to see the "battle field" around him better, it now being easier to both think about his own attack and his opponent's attack at the same time. Multitasking would certainly prove helpful... if he really did want to become a hero..that is...
"You seem in an off mood today, Kageyama." The voice he least expected to call his name, that of the bird hero, Tokoyami, approached with Dark Shadow hovering over his shoulder.
Mob sweat, fumbling a step back and putting his hands up defensively. "What?? N-no! I- I was just thinking!"
"Hm..." Tokoyami slid his hands into his pockets, turning his beak to scan over the rest of the rocky gym room. Where the two stood was along the right wall from the entrance. "It appears everyone has been thinking a lot lately..almost as much as me. ... Which is surprising." The bird chuckled at his own joke. Mob twisted to see the same as his classmate. Everyone was very much in the zone. Those who sparred hardly talked to one another; same for those who trained on their own. "I don't think I have ever formally spoken with you one-on-one like this before." The hybrid placed a hand on his chest and bowed slightly. "I'm Fumikage Tokoyami, in case you forgot."
"Oh-h, no, I remember your name. Sorry."
"Why are you sorry? I'm the one whose never properly introduced myself." Tokoyami's eyes narrowed a little, so serious.
Mob blushed a little, embarrassed all over again. "I'm sorry! I- I just don't know how else to respond. Hi! I'm Shigeo Kageyama.."
"Hhhh..." Tokoyami dropped his face, massaging his brows for a second. But be couldn't help but smile after his brief frustration had passed. "I never did thank you for those times when you offered me dinner, did I?"
"No?"
"Well, thank you."
"Um.. You're welcome."
The two turned to face the large, open room once more as silence settled between them. Just as the awkward silence was really beginning to build between the two, Tokoyami spoke again.
"You know.. I think I can relate to your struggle more than anyone else here."
"Huh..?"
"Your 'other side.' It is connected to your quirk, correct?" ..Mob nodded hesitantly. "Well, as is my Dark Shadow. As you probably already know, I can lose control of him if it gets too dark. It is because of this that I have grown up with an especially strained relationship with my quirk, specifically the darker aspects of it." Tokoyami stared on ahead stoically as Mob stared at the elder with interest. That..did sound an awfully lot like his own powers.
"...I'm sorry you had to grow up with that tough burden..."
"Tch.. Oh please. I wouldn't be the same person without Dark Shadow. And I certainly wouldn't have the opportunity to become a hero and save people without him. ... Your other side doesn't seem to be all that bad." The elder turned his head so the two were faking one another again. "From what I saw at least, your powers want to create just as much as they want to destroy. ... It's hard to keep all the bad under control, I'll admit, but it'll be worth it in the end when we can use what power we have to help instead of hinder... We just have to redirect that power to do the right thing. .. I often have to talk Dark Shadow out of doing stupid things. Maybe that's all your other side needs as well." Tokoyami noted exactly where his little message quit sticking in the recipient's mind. Mob's eyes darted to the ground. He fidgeted with the end of his shirt for a little bit as he thought.
'No way... Though our abilities may be similar.. Tokoyami doesn't know the depths of the issue... My powers think they are the real me. That's not something you can wish to reason with.'
Realizing he had so rudely ignored his classmate, Mob's shaded eyes flashed back up. "Sorry! Th-th-thank you for the advice! I'll have to try something like that next time!" Mob bowed. Tokoyami pat the boy's shoulder and slid his feet away.
"It's nothing big. Just thought you might need to hear it. If you need any ideas in the future...I'm always open to chat." That made Mob smile as he stood fully up. Man, so many of these UA kids were so nice!
"Your attention, everyone!!" Aizawa called to everyone, stopping even Bakugo in an instant. "I've received many questions about Hagakure and Shouji. Don't worry. The two are alive and in full health. They will, however, not be participating in any more of UA's curriculum." Many gasps echoed through the room. Aizawa didn't answer the barrage of new questions that flooded his way. Mob sunk back a few steps, the dreadful thought that this was all his fault filling his head. "They are on their way here right now, so any questions should be asked to them directly. All I ask is that you respect their decision." There were many more confused protests, but their teacher simply turned around and ignored them. Mob watched his teacher's back closely.. as if expecting to read his mind just this once and confirm whether or not this was all his fault. The suspense was killing him. Why else would two of his own classmates leave less than a full day after returning from that island where he messed up everything?!
A few minutes later, as the suspense was at its highest and everyone had already made up their own theories, the two gym doors were pried open by All Might, who nearly dragged his feet while leading in after him two teens. Wait...were these-?
One was a girl with bright lime green hair and two, big, round teal eyes. Her smile, despite being so full of love and life, twitched with a twinge of sadness, especially at the sight of all her classmates gathered around her.
The other was a tall, buff young man with white hair that covered most of his face and.. wait, that was Shouji! But- but his other four arms were gone! And he no longer wore a mask covering the lower half of his face!
Once the two had stopped before the gathered crowd, they together struck a signature pose of theirs that was sure to prove to everyone their suspicions were correct.
Everyone was in shock. The most immediately vocal were the girls of the classroom, Mina and Ochako leading the charge in running to their girl friend and balling their eyes out as they hugged her tightly. All the girls gathered around their once invisible classmate, so overcome with competing emotions that it was hard to word their racing thoughts. The men weren't far behind, Kaminari, Denki, Izuku, Mineta, Sato and Koda tackling Shouji, crying manly tears. The few who remained just stared frozen, completely mortified.
They... They erased their own quirks?!.. How??? And why!?!
These questions and a slew of a thousand more were asked within the minute, Shouji and Hagakure overcome with too many emotions of their own to answer.
In time, however, as things calmed down, Shouji wiped a tear from under his eye, voice steady enough to provide answers at last. "I'm sorry, guys.. I really am..."
"I am too.." Hagakure sniffed.
"But, when it came down to it... I decided that I could do a lot more without my quirk than with it.."
"I just wanted to know what I would look like. And then, when I finally saw my own face..." The girl sniffed again, but it was useless. A swarm of new tears filled her eyes. "I just- I just felt so whole!" The girls hugged her again as her eyes exploded with hot tears. Shouji idly nodded along.
"How on EARTH did you remove your own quirks, though?! I feel like that should be illegal after finding out where that ability comes from!!" Iida chopped at the air, not the only one who was angered by the sudden change more than anything else.
"I don't know how.." All Might interjected from the sidelines while he rubbed the back of his neck. "..but some doctor was inspired enough by Chisaki to replicate that drug found in his bullets...creating a completely synthetic version of the formula. And thanks to the current mayhem going on...it gained popularity pretty fast. ... Apparently, it only lasts for about a year, so you have to take the medication annually like a vaccine."
"Wow.. already??" Mob was impressed. Even Chisaki himself, with all his knowledge and former experience, took him more than a week to simply replicate what he'd created many times before. Whoever made this synthetic stuff must be really smart! All Might sighed. Neither of the teachers looked at all happy about this, but they respected their students all the same. It was tough, but they both chose to show kindness instead of criticism.
This social issue went a lot deeper than "this bad" and "this good." All everyone could really agree on was that they would miss their friends.
