21 | The Beach Episode #2
Sorry if all these pictures are annoying you. I just have too many on my phone which are perfect for this arc.
========================
][ Previously: Mob went on vacation except not actually, he just went insane. ][
"Do you mind telling me some of his quirk's attributes are, Mrs. Kageyama?" The doctor asked my mom from his chair. I sat on the examination table beside my mother, idly kicking my feet. Mom got to sit in her own chair. On her lap was my two year old brother, Ritsu, who fought against Mom for a taste of his own toes.
I spaced out as she began to tell stories from my past involving my quirk. It was a rather bland office. Not like the one back in our home town, which was lively and had painted monkeys all over the wall. This one was dull and brown. But, Mom said it was the closest place that specialized in quirks, so...
"Shige?" I was suddenly snapped back into the present. "Do you mind showing this kind man your powers, sweetie?"
I softly nodded and lifted my hand. On the other side of the room, little trinkets and objects began to float off of his desk. I tried to twirl them around a little bit, but my spacial awareness wasn't fully developed yet, so many of the items crashed into each other. The doctor didn't seem to mind, however. Rather, he was intrigued.
"Fascinating..." The old man rubbed his wrinkly chin. Carefully I set all the items down, all-be-it in all the wrong places. "Now, when did you say his quirk awakened again?"
My mom idly scratched the side of her head with her one free hand. "I'm not quite sure there was a certain moment when his powers awakened.. He always showed signs of seeing things no one else could, and only at four months old he was using telekinesis to grab his bottle when it was out of reach." The doctor quickly wrote this new information down.
"Hm, thank you for your time, ma'am." The doctor smiled as he lifted his head and adjusted his glasses. They were so big that it made his face look funny. "That should be good enough for a quirk registry. If you would be so interested, enlisting in a few more tests can grant you special care from our quirk safety and developmental program."
My mom chuckled strangely. It was the first time I saw her with that face before. Not quite happy but not quite anything else either. "Thank you, but we won't be needing that. His quirk causes no problems, I can assure you." Mom then stood up and hoisted Ritsu onto her hip. "Come on, Shige." Stretching her hand out to me. I grabbed it, and with the combined help of her guiding hand and my own quirk, dropped from the stiff bed and landed my feet gently onto the ground. "Thank you for your time, Dr."
"And to you as well, ma'am... Oh, but first real quick."
"Hm?" She turned to face him at the door, still holding onto my small hand.
"..And you are absolutely certain there is no found downside to your son's quirk?" A hint of hesitancy caught in his voice. Mom shook her head. "Oh, don't be ashamed to admit that there is one. All quirks have some kind of catch to them.. Take mine for example. I can recreate living bacterial cells... My catch is that it only works if I eat a specimen of said bacteria, and even then it might not work just because..reasons. Every quirk on this planet works the same way. Someone might have super strength, but they are only as strong as their hair is long. Or someone might be able to spit poison, but only if they ingest enough water beforehand. Why, I'm sure even All Might has a catch to his quirk.. It is a pretty basic quirk theory, but a proven one nonetheless. ... If there truly appears to be no catch to your son's quirk..then that quite honestly frightens me with how powerful it is... Take care, Mrs. Kageyama." His expression was so serious, a look so genuinely filled with concern. "Because I wouldn't want you to find out what that catch may be the wrong way." I'm probably just remembering it incorrectly, but, I remember those man's last few words being really scary.
Apparently, my mom did so too, because she left without saying another word to anyone else.
On the drive back home, it was oddly quiet. No music. No games. No conversing.
"Hhh, Shige, would you please make your brother stop eating himself?" My mom huffed glancing at the two of us in her mirror. I turned my head from staring at the trees to instead look at my brother in the other booster seat, stuffing all five of his toes into his mouth. I pushed on his head until he let go to whine instead. Mom sighed again, mind clearly focusing on other things. I returned to staring out the window.
"Mom..?" I looked at her.
"Yes?"
"Am I...weird?"
"No, of course not, Shige!" She looked over her shoulder at me with compassion in her eyes. "That doctor was just being silly!" Returning her eyes to the road. She tightened her grip on the steering wheel a little.
Nothing was wrong with me, huh?
Then why did everyone keep treating me like there was?
Kids can pick up on far more than spoken words or actions. It can take but a concerned stare to get the message across, or even a slight trembling in the voice to understand.
No one ever told me I was strange directly, but the messaging was still made clear.
-----
"Kayo!~ I'm here to pick up- aa!" My mom's old highschool friend was startled at the sight of us playing in the front yard. I, Ritsu, and her three year old -- same age as Ritsu -- stood in the grass playing a game of catch with mud, except instead of me using my hands, I would catch the mud with my powers and make the mud balls fly over our heads. Though Joey was really enjoying himself, his mom clearly wasn't. "Joey!!"
"Hi, Mom!!" The boy happily waved at her. "Look! Mob can make mud fly!" The boy giggled.
"Uhhuh..." She just stared, clearly unsure of what to do. Picking up on her obvious signs of distress, I dropped the mud and refused to pick it up again, despite her son's pleas.
"Hello, Tsu!" My mom exited the front door. "..Something the matter?"
"Oh-h! Nothing!" The lady put on a fake smile. "You didn't tell me your son had a quirk!"
"I didn't? Oh! Must have slipped my mind. Yeah, he's no different with his powers, though. Always so sweet!"
"Riight..."
-----
"Mom...? When is Joey coming over again?" I approached my mother in the kitchen and tugged on her pant sleeve. Must have not been the right time. At the last second before turning to me, my mom swiped a couple tears out of her eyes. "Mom?"
"Joey's...not coming back, sweetie.."
"What? Why??" It wasn't often that I saw my mother sad like this. Did something bad happen? "Did he get hurt?"
"No, he's fine. His mom.. just.. isn't comfortable with our family right now..." She was clearly hiding something from me. I just couldn't figure out what. "Do you..think you could not use your powers quite so much, sweetie? At least not around new kids?"
"Hm? Why?"
"No real reason. Just.. it might be a little more polite that way." Mom was especially good about hiding the truth from me in the moment. Problem though is that you can never hide a truth forever. As I grew older, I came to understand the history of this town and how they really thought about my powers.
Most of these people were descendants of refugees who came here just to get away from all the chaos quirks brought. That, and the shockingly low percentage of quirk users in the area unfortunately came with a prejudice. Small and subtle as it may seem, I could feel it. One action builds on top of another, and another on top of that. No, I could never point you to a specific time when I realized it, but one day I just knew.
That I wasn't normal.
And I never would be normal unless I stopped using my powers all-together.

But... There always was one person who never saw me that way.
-----
"Come on, Mob, let's dig a tunnel to each other!" Tsubomi never treated me any different, even as I used my powers in front of her.
When she stopped caring about them, however...so did I.
In fact, I even started to despise them. They brought me nothing but bad looks and no friends. So what was the point in having them?
So, I stopped using my powers all together... And I guess they hated that.
-----
"B-b-brother...?"
What.. What have I done?!
"It hurts...
..brother."
...
Turns out my quirk does have a catch.
I may be super powerful... But it comes at the cost of my powers having a mind of their own.
And a will that doesn't exactly align with my morals...

"You know.. You're one of the few people who were always there for me, Izuku." Mob wrapped an arm of his around the greenette's shoulder. Such a hot touch. On the verge of stinging the elder's skin even through their clothes! "I like that a lot about you, actually. Never judgemental or scared." Despite the compliment, Izuku couldn't help but feel like there was something up. Obviously, his entrance was rather uncalled for, but even now there was something oddly hostile about the way his new classmate spoke. ..Hard to put into words..
"U-u-um, thanks!" He faked a smile. Tried to make it real as possible, but, again, something was up.
"Oh- sorry, am I burning you? Gosh, you gotta tell me next time, man!" Mob pulled himself from the other, revealing a faint burn mark where his arm was. Izuku touched the spot tenderly, unsure of how to react. "Now, I know, I know, I may seem a little different right now," chuckling, floating a little higher into the air so that he was about as tall as the rest of them. "But trust me, alright? There's this big thing I'm super excited to show you! Remember what you told me last night? I did it!!" He was oddly giddy. "I made something awesome for once!" He did little hops in the sky. Everyone stared at him curiously. "I know you're busy, but here," Suddenly, every classmate of his who was there at the time were picked up and pulled into the air with Shigeo. "It'll be really quick, but I have to show you!" And then he flew off, all of his captured classmates in tow.
----------
"..What are you doing?" Elyse kicked her toes through the sand up to the blond on the beach, who was presently scooping handfuls of the same granules.
He appeared to be so deep in thought, so fixated on this silly little task. "I've always wanted to burry myself in sand before...but I never had the time to... But, I'm an adult now. So I get to choose when I leave the beach!"
"...Hm, good idea. I'll join you." Elyse plopped down and did just that, the two of them working together to dig out one massive hole on the shore.
----------
"Here we are~" Mob set everyone down on the fresh, luscious grass. As Izuku's feet touched ground, he looked around at all the sights completely awestruck.
Towering mountains of rock jutted over seas of sweet smelling grass and ferns. The ocean waves crashed spectacularly against its rocky shores! Every plant was fresh, new, and luscious; full of life. And the shape of the mountains, all of it, was carved beautifully, like the wild mountains of Hawaii.
This was an island. Mob had created an island over night!
"Do you like it??" Kicking his feet in the air a little, the boy closely observed each and every astonished face.
"Wait.. so you created all of this from the ground up?!" Ochako asked. Shigeo happily nodded his head. Bakugo fell to his knees, probably having a crisis or something.
"This.. This is amazing, Mob!-"
"-Shigeo."
"Right, right.." Izuku didn't want to offend his friend by asking about the name change, but it remained a topic on his mind.
"Wait I didn't know you could make plants like this." Mineta observed while flicking the leaf on a bush.
"Oh! I can only grow them! I had to borrow seeds from the bigger island! A few animals too to make the place more lively!"
"Isn't that stealing?" Ochako brought up.
"Yeah, you need to give those animals back to their rightful owners!" Iida demanded, chopping the air in Shigeo's direction. The flying boy crossed his arms stubbornly, pretending not to hear them.
"So anyways! Do you guys want to explore? Come on!! There is a lake over here!" Shigeo flew off in one direction, but stopped when he noticed everyone's hesitancy to follow. "..What's wrong, guys? I didn't set up any traps or anything.." His wide smile weakened.
"I'd love to, but..." Izuku stepped forward, holding one hand with another. "But we have a responsibility to the people on the other island, remember?"
Shigeo's shoulders dropped. He looked forlornly over his creation. The one he was so eager to share.
... No one wanted to join in on the excitement of his power. But, at least they didn't immediately villainize him either.. mostly.
It still hurt.
That no one would ever be close to him, or truly love him as he was.
Shigeo's fists clenched and shook. But then he let that go. "I understand.." He looked at his classmates with compassion. He then chuckled and rubbed the back of his head. Felt like he had a lot he wanted to say. But...how is one supposed to voice a pain they have felt their whole life? One so integral to their being that it can no longer be separated from them.?
Rejection.
A wind started to swarm. Dark mist completely overtook the flying boy's body. White filled his eyes where once there was red. He curled inward, halfway to a fetal position. Though he made it look like he was turning away he still watched closely. The faces of his classmates broke out into a wide array of expressions from confusion to horror. But there were a few who just stared at him as if little had changed. Oddly enough, Bakugo was one of them, then Uraraka, Shoto...and Izuku.
But they still weren't friends.
Shigeo lifted his hand, picking everyone up in an instant. With a flick of his wrist, they were all shot off into the direction they had come. Though they all landed safely on the other island in the end, it was still quite a shock.
Was he...coming back?
----------
It was much later in the day when the sunlight was beginning to settle into a dirty orange.
"Heh, you look funny." Elyse remarked at Reigen's bobble head sticking out of the sand.
The man smirked back. "So do you." Alas, the two were were buried all the way up to their necks. They sat within the sand facing one another, about three feet apart. The adults laughed. Ah, there was nothing quite like two serious adults adopting the mindsets of retarded children. (I'm Autistic, so I get to make that joke.)
Suddenly, Serizawa stood up from patting the ground around them and stared off into the distance down the shoreline. Teru followed after, dropping his ice cream even.
"Um....guys?" Reigen couldn't see or sense what they could. Elyse couldn't even turn around!
Thump.... Thump.... Thump....
Serizawa limped to their umbrella and plucked it out of the ground, wielding it like a large bow staff of sorts.
"Serizawa. Your leg!! Remember?!" Hanazawa warned the elder, genuinely worried.
The man gripped his weapon tightly. "I don't care.. At the end of the day...it's just a leg." He gritted his teeth, speaking so passionately that Reigen worried there was something he had missed.
And then the threat arrived. It was a horrifying beast! Wolf, dragon, whatever it was was headed their way!
RRRAAHHHHHH!
The thing looked hostile. The other people on the beach began to scream and run.
"Aaa!" Reigen's head wiggled frantically. "I'm STUCK!" Elyse was still trying to figure out what the heck was going on!
"Don't worry, Reigen! That thing's not coming any closer!" Teru jumped in front of Serizawa and the others, though still healing was willing to risk it all for them.
Luckily, some heroes from class 1A showed up, so Teru and Serizawa merely joined in the fray to hold the villain back.
"Wait!! A-aren't they going to dig us out first?!" Reigen protested.
"Oh, I'm sure they'll come back for us eventually." Elyse sighed dully.
"Great. ... Problem. I need to pee."
"Eh, just go right now. No judgement here. I went about five minutes ago."
"...Well that's not very ladylike."
"I'm going to spit on you."
"Okay-okay, I'll shut up!" And that's when he knew he truly loved her.
----------
Shigeo hovered over his island, the center of a hurricane that ravished the place he had put so much time and effort into. All while he hovered completely still, hugging himself tightly while staring down blankly at the ground far beneath him.
"Woah, Shigeo, you really need to chill out!!" A familiar voice tore the dark figure's attention from the turmoil both inside and out. At last his eyes landed on a green blob about ten feet away. His eyes widened. Dimple??
Dimple understood him better than anyone else. Dimple was a true friend.
"What's up, Shigeo..? Apparently, your desire to see me again kept me from completely vanishing! That, coupled with this large energy spiral allowed for me to come back!" The boy started to move toward the spirit. "Woah! Practice some social distancing, buddy!.. Sorry, I know you're happy to see me, but I'm afraid I'm in a really fragile state right now. One wrong move by your part and I might be exorcised all over again!" Shigeo dropped his hands at his sides, stooping his chin as well.
His powers were... Dangero-- no. They were a gift! Something that should NOT be tucked away! They literally WERE him!! Why did such a valuable part of his own life have to be such an inconvenience to everyone else?!
The storm around him picked up in intensity, so strong it even forced the spirit to struggle against it! "Woah! What's the matter, Shige?!" Shigeo clutched his head, curling into another ball of pain.
Mob was... Mob was... So....close...
Glowing tears dropped from his eyes.
'No!.. This is my body! Not his! I don't want to lose it again!'
Yet Mob grew in strength.
His powers weren't helping anything.
They only pushed people away.
How could he do what he wanted to do?
What did he want to do..?
----------
"I'm not just some 'catch' to your quirk, d#####!.. I'm my own person...with a life and dreams of my own!"
His memories were about the same as Mob's up to a certain point.
The pressure of staying true to himself while being "normal" was a losing act. And then one day, when he was maybe five or six, he simply let himself act the part of a normal child. He took a step back, no longer seeking the attention of others or using his powers for anything special. He merely allowed himself to exist in a crowd of people, pretending to be just like them.
But no.. That wasn't enough, was it?
His act became so good that it could function without him. Thus, Mob was born, essentially an autopilot specially designed to handle the mundanity of a normal life.
Shigeo, what he believed to be his true self, began to dissociate more and more. Weeks would go by in the blink of an eye. He would only awaken again when Mob's emotions began to spike, signaling that something interesting was going on in this bleak, dull existence he had fallen into.
Shigeo wanted to destroy things. He wanted to create things. He wanted everyone to love him for what he was. Though he wasn't interested in becoming a godlike figure, he did in a way want people to look up to him for his power and strength: a kind only he could provide to the world. He kind of wanted to be like All Might, in his own.. special way.
After all, what was the point in being "normal" if you could instead be a shining ray of hope in the world?
But normalcy was the only way he could get through life as he was. Yes, sociatal pressure had dug its roots into him. The Mob persona acted as his emotional barrier. Meanwhile, Shigeo steadily became more and more desensitized to the world around him.
Desensitized enough to finally snap when he and his brother were threatened.
After that incident, Mob really took control, shoving Shigeo into the deepest confines of his own mind. Now, he was no longer a passive viewer of the world through Mob, but a prisoner locked away by him.
The following years consisted of him being used by Mob and Reigen. Like a caged animal who was only let out to accomplish a mission or get a task done. Of course, he took every chance he got to be of service, but...this belittlement was enraging.
By age fourteen, he had had enough of this.
And so he devised a new plan.
Unlike him, Mob became weaker when his emotions spiraled out of control. So the plan was simple, really. Wait for Mob to reach 100%... And take over his body, never returning it again.
...
And yet, Mob somehow always used logic -- the same sociatal pressures from the outside world -- to weaken Shigeo and reclaim his body.
'You're going to hurt people.' 'You're going to destroy everything.' 'You're never going to make any friends like that.' These were the words Mob would use in the back of his head while he had control, a personification of his very anxieties from childhood and on. Because Mob knew Shigeo's weakness just as well.
And whereas Mob was weak to emotions, Shigeo was weak to logic, reasoning, and social pressures.
...Both were a little timid and shy at the end of the day. Pushovers in their own way.
And both despised each other...with every fiber of their being. Thus, the struggle for control was a vicious one. A dance where one's own sanity hung in the balance.

And while the dance for control was forever a close one, Mob, somehow always came out on top.
----------
The skies cleared up in an instant. All of the dark matter around the boy's body poofed out of sight. Faint, Mob fell down for the ground head first.
"SHIGEO, WAKE UP!!" Dimple raced after Mob. He successfully caught up with the falling Esper and tugged on his clothes. That was just enough to slow the boy's fall so that he landed softly on the very peak of the mountain in the center of his island. "Whew!" Dimple was so frail, he was surprised he could even pull that off! "Now..." Looking out over the vast ocean. "Where the heck are we?"
Dimple squinted at something in the distance. Another, larger island poked out of the horizon line. It actually wasn't all too far away either!
"Huh??"
Dimple couldn't believe his eyes, for right after he had looked at the island, a huge, goofy version of that green haired brat inflated to the size of a small mountain!
"What the h###?" As much as he wanted to stay by Mob's side...maybe he should go and check that out.
