𝐱𝐢. love in the dark
TEDDY WATCHED her dad walk out, her heart beginning to race. Where was he going? The distressed look on Susannah's face wasn't helping at all.
She looked at Conrad who gave her a nod at her worried glare, trying to bring her comfort. Conrad thought she looked beautiful. But, he couldn't shake the fact that Jeremiah was dancing with the girl he wanted. And Jeremiah couldn't shake that Teddy was dancing with another boy.
"May I now introduce, the escorts." Teddy gave Kai a smile, tapping him on the back of his head whilst she walked away.
Teddy hugged Gigi, who held her hand out, "Your brother is such a gentleman." She said, blushing like crazy, "Gross."
As the escorts lined up to do their dance, the girls cheered. Their silly dance brought light to this crazy day. It was hilarious watching them do their moves. But, surprisingly, her eyes were shot on Kai. She felt a hand wrap around her shoulder as she looked at her dads teary eyes.
"Dad, you okay?" Teddy now turned her attention to him as he nodded, hugging her. "You look beautiful, sweet girl."
"What happened?" She asked him, speaking over the clapping coming from crowd. "Nothing happened." Teddy looked to Conrad and she knew that he knew what was wrong with him.
Conrad couldn't look at her. He had been keeping a secret that could break everyone's hearts. She stared at both of them, her hands beginning to shake. "Why are you lying to me?"
Her voice made him look at his feet, ignoring her completely. "Im not doing this with you right now, Teddy." Teddy scoffed, storming away from the table with force.
Teddy stopped in her tracks, hearing the taps on the glass. It was time for the dance. She looked around for Kai, feeling her the rest of her body begin to shake. Her breathing was becoming shallow and her shaky hand went to grab the champagne off the table.
Kai looked around for her as well, his face curving at the sight of her drinking. He quickly rushed over to her, taking the drink out of her hand. "Hey," he grabbed her spare hand, feeling her shaky, clammy hands, reaching for her other hand.
"You okay?" He asked. She didn't answer at first, shaking her head, "I can't do this. I can't," she tried to walk away until the boy grabbed her by her waist with two hands, forcing her eyes on his.
"I need you." Kai pleaded, giving him a scared look as the song began playing in the background. She closed her eyes, nodding as she let him lead her to the floor.
Kai watched her closely, seeing her analyze her surroundings. He gently grazed her shoulder, moving it to her chin as he made her look at him. "Just me and you, okay? Nobody else matters." Teddy inhaled, now staring at him.
As the dance started, their hands held infront of each other and Kai only smiled at her. His gentle hands caressed her waist and spun her around, still remaining eye contact.
She felt her heart pound in her chest as she felt a pair of familiar eyes on her. But, she didn't care, sending a wide smile to Kai. At this, his heart fluttered, trying so desperately not to kiss her right here.
They slowly lowered their hands, hearing the cheering around them. Kai reached down to her hands, feeling them now at ease. Teddy chuckled, jumping up with her arms around his neck. He laughed, holding her back just as tight. He spun her around once before he placed her back down.
Jeremiah watched from a distance, his sadness building. He stomped over to Conrad, his fists clenching. "Conrad, we need to talk, all right? It's important, it's about mom."
"We'll talk about this later, alright?" Conrad's voice shook, backing up next to Belly. "No, it's important." His voice was harsh and demanding.
"It's okay." Jeremiah knew. He knew that he had been lied to. Told that everything was okay by Conrad, the boy who told him he was overthinking. It was all a lie. His mom really wasn't okay.
"You already know, don't you?" Jeremiah said, staring at him angrily. "You've known this whole
fucking time and didn't tell me?" Jeremiah raised him voice, making Belly look around in confusion. "Jere,"
Teddy wasn't paying any attention to her surroundings now, lost in the boys face. She was realizing she cared for him, her hand on his chest and his hand on her waist, it was all so surreal.
As she stood on her tippy toes, ready to place a kiss to his lips, a loud crash was heard from the other side of the floor. It was Jeremiah and Conrad, fighting. Teddy saw Conrad hit the floor, immediately leaving Kai's side, who was just about to speak.
Her heels hit the floor as she rushed over, putting a hand on Belly's shoulder as she passed. "Jeremiah!" Teddy pushed him back lightly as he went to punch him again. Jeremiah didn't look at her, staring at Conrad who laid on the ground.
He didn't realize until, she let go, her dad pulling her back. "Hey!"
Jeremiah stared at her with an expression she couldn't even recognize. She didn't see Jeremiah in this moment. She saw a boy who needed to be there for him in this moment. But, she couldn't.
"Both of you, stop it." Susannah scolded, rushing over alongside Sam. "We know mom. We both do."
The other two pairs of siblings looked around in confusion, not knowing what was going on. "Know what?"
The words that left their mouth would've never been suspected. Teddy immediately looked at her twin, who was having the same reaction as her. Susannah was dying.
Teddy cried with the comfort of her bed, hugging her pillow. She was so stupid. She should've known. She should've known something was wrong. All of the love she had been giving, wanting to see her in a white dress, the paintings— the necklace.
Her hand reached for the necklace around her neck, turning her head as she heard the door open. There was her brother with red eyes, right infront of her dad. She scooted over, letting the two of them sit with her.
Sam lightly stroked her hair, "Don't be mad at her. She only wanted you to have a perfect summer, you two." Teddy nodded, letting out a sob she didn't know she was holding in. "Is she gonna get better?" Trey asked.
Teddy already knew the answer to this, looking up at him. He let another tear fall from his eyes. Teddy wrapped her arms around her brother, placing a soft kiss on his shoulder as he let out soft cries.
Sam slowly got up, walking downstairs. He noticed the two girls embraced, smiling with sad eyes. "So nobody was gonna tell me?"
"I didn't want you to worry. Im going into Chemo." Susannah comforted, rushing over to hug him. "We need you here. If I would've knew sooner," he let out a soft cry, making both of their heart break. "I know, Sammy. I know."
Susannah pulled back, smiling at him with wet eyes, wiping his own. Laurel couldn't take it as she walked into their hug, sniffling as well. After a few seconds they all pulled back. "Let's have this dinner, mhm?" Sam asked the women who both nodded.
"All right, everyone get down here. We still have to eat!"
Teddy walked down, her straightened hair still pressed as well, with her sleep shorts and gray hoodie. It was Jeremiah's hoodie. She didn't even realize until she was halfway down the stairs, but she tried not to think about it.
They all sat down together, semi-happy for maybe the last time together in cousins. She tried not to think of it to much, but she could feel his eyes on her that whole time.
As they were all cleaning up the table and talking, she finally locked eyes with him. She turned her body, her eyes on his as she walked out the poolside door.
Jeremiah's grew anxious, watching her walk away. He knew he should follow, and that's what he did. The cold air hit his body as he followed her, her back facing him.
Teddy's back faced him, her arms crossed as heard him walk up. It was silent before she finally spoke, "Okay, I need you to know," he quickly shook his head, "Don't."
"Stop!" She had enough. "Stop acting like you don't feel the same. Because I know you do." Jeremiah shrugged, looking away from her, "I don't know what you mean."
"God, you know I was so angry when you were acting like you hated me all of a sudden. And when you kissed Belly in the pool that night— I hated you. I didn't understand why I felt the way I felt," Jeremiah tried to cut her off once more, tears welling up in his eyes, "Please— I just need to say this." She took steps closer to him,
"Jeremiah, I have never felt this way for anyone." She looked up at him, now crying, "I love you. I love you so much that I am willing to leave right now if you don't want me. I will never speak to you again if that's what you want, but what I want is you." Her words made his tears now threaten to fall looking away from her.
"Do you love me? Or even like me?"
"I can't. I can't," he shook his head, pulling away from her until she grabbed him once again, "Do you love me, Jeremiah Fisher?"
"Teddy, stop." Jeremiah warned, trying to pull away. "Answer me!"
"I love you, Teddy!" He finally shouted, making her take a step back in shock. His face was full of so many emotions she couldn't work out, but all she knew was he meant it as she let out a relieved sob she didn't know she was holding in.
"I love you so much, I cannot be selfish with you!" Teddy shook her head, "I had to hate you! Even if I didn't because all I wanted was you! I still do. I need you, Teddy."
At this he let out a sob as well, quickly grabbing her by her face as he pressed a long awaited kiss to her lips. She craved this moment. Prayed for it even. She couldn't piece this moment together, letting a tear fall from her eyes as she pulled away.
"I love you, I love you so much. I need you, I can't breathe without you," he let out another cry, making her pull him into his arms as she knew he was crying about more than this moment.
"I am right here. I'm not going anywhere." She comforted him, her hand rubbing the back of his neck with her finger tips lightly. She stood on her tippy toes, him bent down with his hands around her waist and his head buried in her arms; he had never felt so safe.
Teddy let him place another kiss to her lips, and she placed one on his forehead wiping his tears as she smiled at him. She had never been happier.
She didn't know how long they stood there and she didn't care. Because after so long he was finally in her arms. It was finally him. After all of this time.
It was Jeremiah. It always had been.
