"Hi, girls! Did you sign up for the environmental fair?" she asked.
"Oh yeah, we will," Dionne brushed off, before you swooped in.
"You have such pretty eyes," you complimented, removing her glasses. "Don't hide them."
"These clips are so cute," Cher remarked, swiftly taking them out of her hair.
"And this tiny little waist," Dionne added, wrapping her cardigan around her lower torso.
"Girls, you're so sweet," she sighed, walking off with an eyeroll. "Oh, don't forget to sign up for the environmental fair."
"Not a total betty, but a vast improvement."
"Well, we did our best," Cher shrugged. "We got to book if we're gonna make it to P.E." Dionne and you groaned as you walked out into the school's courtyard. "Come on, girls."
"I feel like bailing, dude," you grumbled.
"Come on, let's go."
"I know what you mean, but at least it's exercise," Cher stated. "I feel like such a heifer. I had two bowls of Special K, three pieces of turkey bacon, a handful of popcorn, five peanut butter M&M's, and, like, three pieces of licorice."
"That's nothing, Cher. Please don't be concerned with your weight," you soothed, rubbing her arm as she smiled thankfully at you.
"Oh, my God, look!" Dionne gasped. "Is that a photo op or what?"
"Look at that body language. Legs crossed towards each other," Cher observed.
"That's an unequivocal sex invite," you nodded. "Oh, girls, he's getting her digits."
"Look at Geist. She is so cute," Dionne gushed.
"Ooh. Old people can be so sweet," Cher cooed.
Through the next few weeks, there was vast improvement in your grades. Cher handed you your booklet with a knowing smirk, and you peeled yours open. Behind you, Elton grinned at his grade, reaching over and wrapping his arms around your shoulders. He pressed a kiss to your cheek, causing your smile to broaden.
Your mouth dropped as you, Cher and Dionne shared a wide-eyed look when you caught Geist and Hall sucking face at the carpark.
Miss Geist smeared the chalk across the board, writing out two beautiful words, 'Have Fun!' You and Summer clapped hands and flicked your hair, before turning around, welcoming the friendly embrace of Elton.
The entire student body was utterly grateful for the improvement in their grades.
You stepped out of the cafeteria with your Coke, and you smiled when you were greeted by everyone clapping and cheering for you. You mockingly bowed, biting your straw.
I felt so satisfied, I wanted to do more good deeds.
"Ah-choo!" Dionne sneezed.
"D, when your allergies act up, take out your nose ring," you sighed.
"-Alright, Y/N!" IYou didn't even hear Miss Stoeger calling for you, far too busy chatting with Dionne, Cher and Amber. "Earth to Y/N! Come in, Y/N!"
You were in the middle of laughing, before you realized she was calling you. "Oh." You handed Dionne you phone as you walked over. "Miss Stoeger...I would just like to say that physical education in this school is a disgrace. I mean, standing in line for 40 minutes is hardly aerobically effective. I doubt I worked off the calories in a dry stick of carefree gum."
The class of girls erupted into cheers as you smirked. "Well, you certainly exercised your mouth, Y/N. Now hit the ball."
You were occupied with relishing in your small victory that the ball whizzed past your face, causing you to gasp. "Miss Stoeger, that machine is just a lawsuit waiting to happen."
"Thanks for the legal advice," she said sarcastically. "Dionne, you're up."
"Oh no, Miss Stoeger, I have a note from my tennis instructor, and he would prefer it if I didn't expose myself to any training that might derail his teachings."
"Fine. Amber!"
"Miss Stoeger, my plastic surgeon doesn't want me doing any activity where balls fly at my nose."
"Well, there goes your social life," you teased, and the girls giggled.
"Miss Stoeger. Got another one." You looked over at the principle, who had a girl trailing behind him like a lost puppy. He handed her a note that had the girl's details on them. "Ladies, we have a new student with us. This is Tai Frasier."
"Tai, you don't have time to change but, you could hit a few balls in those clothes."
"She could be a farmer in those clothes," Amber taunted as she snickered with her friend.
"Guys, my mission is clear," you said. "Would you look at that girl? She is so adorably clueless. We've got to adopt her."
"Y/N, she is toe up," Dionne whispered. "Our stock would plummet."
"D, don't you want to use your popularity for a good cause?"
"No," she murmured, but you ignored her.
"Come here," you beckoned, Cher following suit. "Yeah, come here. Hang with us."
"Oh, thank you," the girl appreciated.
"How do you like California?" Cher asked.
"Man, I'm freakin'. I could really use some sort of an herbal refreshment."
"Oh, well, we do lunch in 10 minutes. We don't have any tea, but we have Coke and stuff," Dionne told.
"No shit, you guys got coke here?"
"Yeah, this is America," you shrugged.
After P.E., you, Cher and Dionne led the new girl around the school. You had changed into a collared dress that ended at your mid-thigh, with a pair of black platform Mary Janes and some simple silver heart earrings and necklace.
So, we decided to show Tai the ropes at Bronson Alcott High School.
"That is Alana's group over there. They do the TV station," you started, gesturing over to the small group of kids at the lawn. "They think that's the most important thing on earth." You then nodded your head to a large group over by a tree. They were all yelling into their phones or at each other. "And that's the Persian Mafia. You can't hang with them unless you own a BMW." You snapped Tai's gaze to the bench. "And there's Elton in the white vest, with all the most popular boys in the school."
"Including my boyfriend. Ain't he cute?" Dionne pointed over to Murray with a smile.
"Yeah," she agreed, grinning.
"And that's my older brother, Dean," Cher added, and you watched as Tai's eyes widened.
"Wow," she said, and you were quick to shut off her view.
I am looking out for her, that's all...
"If you make the decision to date a high school boy, they are the only acceptable ones."
"Y/N, which one of them is your boyfriend?" she asked.
"As if!" you exclaimed, shaking your head.
"Y/N's got attitude about high school boys. Cher included."
"It's a personal choice every woman has got to make for herself," you defended.
"Woman, lend me $5." You looked over, finding Murray with his arm draped over Dionne's shoulder.
"Murray, I have asked you repeatedly not to call me woman," she sighed.
"Excuse me, Miss Dionne." She nodded in appreciation. "Okay, well, street slang is an increasingly valid form of expression. Most of the feminine pronouns do have mocking but not necessarily misogynistic undertone."
You giggled quietly, Dionne turning back to you with an incredulous smile as Tai was astonished. "Wow. You guys talk like grownups," she said.
"Oh, well this is a really good school," Cher said, you and Dionne nodding in agreement.
"I'm gonna go get a soda. You guys want?" Tai asked.
"Sure," you said, and she walked off.
You looked at the two with a smile, and Dionne complimented, "She's nice."
"Ooh! Project!" you cheered.
The three of you ventured to the cafeteria, taking a seat at your usual table once you had gotten your food. You were sitting in between the two, holding out your hand for Dionne as she painted your nails whilst snacking on a cookie.
"Are you sure that's fat free?" she asked Cher, who was cutting through her croissant.
"Oh, yes. And you lose weight by doing it like this. It's true."
Tai sat down with her tray, immediately retelling, "I met a really cool guy."
"Describe," you prompted as she placed three cokes down in front of you.
"Alright, he's got long hair. Really funny. Straight off, he offers me some smoke. There he is!"
She pointed over to- Your eyes went wide as Travis Birkenstock waved at you and the girls, and I averted your eyes. "Don't look, ladies." Dionne giggled, shaking her head at you. "Are you talking about drugs?"
"Yeah."
"Tai, how old are you?"
"I'll be 16 in May," she said.
"My birthday's in April, and as someone older, can I please give you some advice?" She nodded so you continued, "It is one thing to spark up a doobie and get laced at parties, but it is quite another to be fried all day."
"Do you see the distinction?" Dionne probed.
"...Yeah."
"Loadies generally hang out on the grassy knoll, over there," Cher sighed, pointing over.
"Sometimes they come to class and say bonehead things, and we all laugh, of course, but no respectable girl actually dates them," you told her bluntly.
"Mm-mm."
"You don't want to start on the wrong foot, do you?" She shook her head now, wiping the milk from her lips. "I've got an idea. Let's do a makeover."
Dionne and Cher gasped the second you said it, but Tai chuckled nervously, "No. No."
"Aw, come on, let us," Cher urged.
"Y/N's main thrill in life is a makeover, okay, it gives her a sense of control in a world full of chaos," Dionne added.
"Please?" you begged.
She then sighed, laughing. "Sure. Why not? Shit, you guys, I've never had straight friends before." You all smiled, then shared confused looks, but grinned, nonetheless.
