chapter two- so soon
We jumped into my old and rickety Corolla from about 2010. I buckled Ivy into her car seat and got on the road.
BMO Harris Bank
You spent $4.49 at Speedway, in Boston at 11:02 A.M.
He's at speedway. I message the police department. The more they know about where Niall is, the better.
After a half hour drive, I arrive at the police station. I hold Ivy's small hand and she looks up at me inquisitively.
As I walk in, I am greeted by a plump-ish woman with a police jumper on. She looked to be in her early forties, and she had a mole on her chin. I glance at her name tag which reads Tori.
"Addison?" The woman nods at me.
"Yes, that's me." I reply, my voice shaky.
"Okay, I'm Tori. We are spotting down the man you are searching for. But, before we grab him, we need some quick information from you."
I inwardly huff, but reply quietly. "Yes, how can I help?"
"What is this man's name and how do you know him?"
"His name is Niall James Horan. He's my husband." My voice cracks as I say husband. I can feel Ivy's stare as she questions me.
Tori nods and leads me to a room where they have a dozen computers, all showing pictures of Niall where he was spotted in the past hour. He looked very similar as he did two years ago, his hair still brown and flipped to the side neatly. He seems to have the same sense of style and I recognize the jacket and joggers he has on. I sniff awkwardly, and everyone's gaze turns towards me.
Tori clears her throat and says, "Is this the man you are looking for?"
I nod. She leads me out to a black Jeep that has the police logo on it, and blinker lights on too. I sit in the back, with Ivy on my lap. I secure the seatbelt and prepare myself to possibly see Niall. We cruise down the street, as I pass "landmarks," which are realistically just the Target, Starbucks, and Speedway he was spotted at.
"He was last seen at a BMO Harris Bank," Tori told me.
"That's the bank we have a credit card for, and what I get the notifications for."
"Bingo," muttered Tori.
I peep out the window to search for a local BMO Harris. Finally, I see the logo plastered on a brick building with about four small windows.
"There!" I yelp.
"Alright let's make a left turn..." Tori turns the car and parks in the lot. Her belt is loaded with a taser and other weapons that were actually very intimidating. She stomps up to the doors, making a scene. I scan the room for anyone familiar.
"I'm looking for a Niall Horan!" She hollers, gaining everyone's attention as if she hadn't already with the grand entrance.
I see a familiar head shoot up as the figure stood with their hands in the air.
Tori holds her taser in hand as she matches up. As she does this, i recognize the face.
Niall.
His eyes are brimmed
with wet tears, and his hands subconsciously graze his hair.
"Is it you?" Tori questions him.
He nods furiously.
I can feel hot tears running down my face, but I wipe them quickly.
"With me." Tori orders and he follows. We all head back to the Jeep.
Tori puts Niall in handcuffs and pushes him against the car.
"Do you know her?" She asks him in a serious tone, motioning to me.
"Yes. Yes I know her." His Irish accent is still recognizable through the chokes and voice cracks. His face is red and he looks as if he were about to burst into tears any second.
Tori seemed very firm with him, which I expected, but it was still kind of scary. I picked up Ivy and went to the other side of the car. I didn't want to get into the mess yet.
A few minutes later, Tori put Niall in the back of the car, which meant I would have to sit next to him. A look of worry spread acros my face, and apparently was noticed by Tori.
"Don't worry Cupcake, you can sit in the front with me." She muttered with a smirk.
I really hated that nickname she gave me.
I buckle with Ivy on my lap. If I turned around, I could see Niall through the glass pane between us. He was crying. It made my heart hurt.
But you don't love him. I thought to myself. He left you. A voice in the back of my head kept saying you really do love him. Great, a little argument inside my head.
Tori drove down to the police station, and not a word was said in the car. Ivy didn't even say anything, which was strange for her normally chatty self. As we walked into the station, Niall kept his head down the whole time, and I would often hear sniffs coming from him. Ivy held my hand tight, but my hands were already sweaty. She gazed up at me the whole time, just staring inquisitively. Niall's hands dangled behind his back, and the clanking of the handcuffs caught my attention for some reason.
We walked into a small room that has three seats and a table. I sat next to Tori with Ivy plopped on my lap, while on the other side of the table Niall sat with two bodyguards on either side of him, standing expressionless. He sighed and looked up to reveal red strained eyes, and a bright red tomato of a face. I made eye contact with him, and tears streamed down his blushed cheeks. Tori banged a Manila folder onto the table, startling me and Niall.
"So, what do we got here?" Tori barked, a bit too loud. She slammed open the folder, revealing a wedding picture of me and Niall, and a few other pictures I sent in. I look up at Niall who stared at the pictures with sadness.
"So, Niall..." Tori read the file. "You left your wife and unborn child in the middle of the night, correct?"
He nodded hesitantly.
"And still spent money on her account?"
"Our account," he corrected.
"Maybe it was ours before you left." I mutter.
"And why did you leave?" Tori questions, ignoring my comment.
"I- I," he stutters. "I was going to meet a good friend of mine, Lewis Capaldi. He was in town that night, and he had just performed. He called me up, telling me he was free." He seemed very uncomfortable the whole time, and I slightly felt bad. I changed my emotions right back to anger and curiosity.
"We visited a pub down the street from my place. Lewis drank way more than I did, and was definitely not going to be able to drive home. I figured I'd call one of his bodyguards who apparently hadn't shown up to the scene. They asked if I could drive him to the bus, since it was so late. Being a nice friend, I did. I didn't want to be annoying to Addison and bring a completely banjaxed man home. I dropped him off at the bus, he was in good hands. On my way back..." he swallowed hard, and hesitated for a moment.
"On the way back I got in an accident. I was taken into the hospital. I had suffered from severe head injuries and was in a coma. They contacted Addi, but she doesn't answer to phone calls from random numbers. So she wouldn't have known that i was gone. I was in a coma for five months. They always tried to call Addison, but she never answered. It broke my heart very much so when I woke up and didn't see my wife. I figured she didn't want me, and that's why she wouldn't come and see my when I was almost dead." He started crying again, and looked down. He stopped talking, and I immediately felt guilty. It wasn't that he didn't want me, he just thought I didn't care.
Why didn't I pick up the phone? I thought to myself. If I had just picked up one of those calls, none of this would have happened.
"I'm so sorry Niall." I whispered and looked up to his blue eyes. We hold our eye contact. "I'm so so so sorry. I should have picked up the phone."
Tori interrupted me before I could say more. "So my work is done, I'll take off ya cuffs, and y'all can go home." I gasp at the abrupt stop.
